View Full Version : Why are some of my 5x7 holders are really 13x18?

I bought a number of 5x7 Fidelity holders. They all say Fidelity 5x7 cut film holder at the top, and most of them are indeed true 5x7 holders. But two of them also say, lower down on the body of the holder '13x18', and that is indeed what those two are. Now I know 5x7 is not quite the same as 13x18, so I wasn't surprised that 5x7 film is loose in the 13x18 holders, but I am a little irritated that Fidelity printed an actively confusing measurement on the holder. Has anyone else come across this?

Cheers

David.

I have only five 13x18 holders, all Fidelity. They all have '5x7' marked on them near the strip for comments. I assume it's because Fidelity use a common mould for those parts of the holder.

I blame the metric system.

As Struan said, all 5x7" / 13x18 Fidelity holders have 5x7" molded in and the 13x18 holders have that marked as an addition.

Same with 4x5" / 9x12, and 8x10" / 18x24. Saves making different molds for the body, and reduced the price of ALL holders.

I use that actively by having BW film in 5x7", 9x12 and 18x24, and colour only in 13x18, 4x5" and 8x10". Sometimes BW in all sizes, but never colour in 5x7", 9x12 or 18x24.

If you bought the film holders on the basis that they were 5x7 then you should have a case for a refund if they are really 13x18. If they were sold to you by someone not familiar with the format it was probably an easy mistake to make.
And just to agree with the previous comments both sizes of holders will have the same external dimensions but differ in the size of film that they will take.

I'm surprised you didn't notice it whilst nit picking. I don't own any Fidelity holders so have never come across this.

I only nit pick when someone tries to pull something really unacceptable on me. You know, like a really ugly over-priced camera with a dodgy bellows - the kind of thing only a total asshole would offer.

I picked up a 13x18 holder on purpose in case we ever run out of 5x7 and our European friends still have 13x18.

Yea I get you. It's amazing how many snobs there are trying to pull one over on you, like rip you off after you do a favour for them.

The holders are 5x7 that is the standard outside dimension the secondary number is the film size, half plate and 13x18 as well as 5x7 all fit in the 5x7 format slide, the difference being the internal layout, none of the fittings and film sizes is compatible, I suggest either you hang onto the slides just in case you come across some 13x18 film or just send them back form whence they came as they are not the items you paid for, I have had the problem of incorrectly described slides with Mr Cad and it was no problem what so ever to return them
