So... I received my Horseman studio L series 8x10 rear standard with groundglass back and 8x10 bellows from the Fedex guy, and everything is awesome, except the groundglass was shattered in several pieces... but I really wasn't surprised. :( :)

So here's my chance to get a brand new groundglass (or two) and I've been shopping around and I need your advice.

The 8x10 carrier frame that attaches to the Horseman L-shaped standard and the groundglass holder frame are CAMBO style (in fact, the groundglass holder frame says "Cambo made in Holland" or something).

So that leads me to believe that the replacement GG is this Cambo glass: http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/cambo_8x10_ruled_ground_glass/cb0418

Other options I've found:

Arca Swiss: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/101466-REG/Arca_Swiss_170018_8x10_Groundglass_Focusing_Screen.html

Wista groundglass fresnel sandwich: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/63415-REG/Wista_211242_8x10_Groundglass_Fresnel_Sandwich.html

Toyo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/61088-REG/Toyo_View_180_817_8x10_Groundglass_Focusing_Screen.html

Bromwell #1: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6671-REG/Bromwell_1734_1734_Viewing_Screen_for.html

Bromwell #2?: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/725250-REG/Bromwell_1728X_8_x_10_203_2.html

Any thoughts on the cheap Bromwell?

My 4x5 back has a fresnel. Do I need a fresnel for my 8x10?

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks!

You seem pretty excited shopping for possibilities, but if it was me, I would just make one. I grind all my own 4x5 glasses.

No, not really excited. Just don't know the difference between a $80 GG and a $200+ GG. I'm looking for some suggestions/recommendations.

200-80=120 dollars.

Steve Hopf is the exception where you can get all three; cheap, fast and good.

A little off topic but I checked out the hopfglass website.

What is the advantage of the doubly expensive borosilicate glass?

I've never used any of their screens, but generally speaking, borosilicate glass is stronger than standard glass. It's less dense, more resilient to temperature changes and will break into larger pieces rather than shattering into tiny pieces.

Surplus Shed has Eastman Kodak ground glass. The 8x10 is $12.00 & the 4x5 is $3.00 (or 10 for $25.00). I bought 1 of each & shipping was only $5.00. I don't think you can do any better than Eastman Kodak glass.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. There's a lot of options out there.

I guess I should have stated my main concern about purchasing a non-custom-made replacement GG:

Will it fit? Is there a standardized size for the 8x10 format, or do the dimensions vary from camera to camera, glass to glass? For example, do all groundglasses labeled "8x10" have a standard length, standard width, and/or standard thickness?

You need to direct that question to each manufacturer.

Any information you get from an online forum is meaningless, and not binding on any manufacturer.

Hopf (Brilliant) GGs are custom-made to your dimensional specs.

I have one of their borosilicate GGs on the Zone VI and it's very nice. Not quite as bright as the Maxwell on the Toko, but much better than the original.

I bought the 8x10 Ground Glass from Surplus Shed for a Calumet 8x10 camera. The glass needed to be ground down in one place to fit. I took it to a local glass company that does all sorts of custom stuff. Example of what they do is regrind the lip of wine glasses that have chips on the lip of the glass. They ground down the 8x10 glass to fit & charged me $1.00. The total cost of the Kodak ground glass was $13.00 plus shipping.

I've always liked what I bought from this guy, and this product seems pretty good.
I use an identical GG/fresnel sandwich on my Wista, and it's a very bright screen.
