Friend of mine had her online address book apparently compromised and everyone has been recieving multiple emails from "Her" I caught it because I recieved a message from her today while she was at work. The message offers a link to a website located in China. The message also contains a DNS which does not match the ISP that she uses.
DNS: 76.96.58.193
Here is the URL: cnbc7.com
Anybody can send e-mail that appears to come from whoever they want. That is the dirty little secret of the SMTP protocol. I used to freak out my friends in college by writing e-mails that appeared to come from law enforcement, Bill Gates etc..
A virus definetly hacked her address book but it didn't have to be a resident virus. It may have just read the address book and sent the e-mails from a totally different computer.
