I have recently purchased a 8x10" Grover. The camera came with a tripod head with a standard tripod thread hole in the bottom. It also has the little slug so that it can be converted to a 3/8" tripod thread.

Since I have the head I was thinking the best and cheapest would to be just get an older wooden tripod with the plate and the hole in the middle. However, since I am new to 8x10". I have NO clue about these types of tripods and what would be the best to get. I have read that even surveyor tripods can be adapted for use.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris Maness

My "Surveyor Tripod Conversion" article is on the home page under "Accessories". I still use the surveyor conversion tripod for field work with my 4x5.

As a traditionalist I prefer wooden tripods for 4x5 and 8x10.

However, for strength and rigidity (and weight) I prefer my Majestics. They'll easily support your car.

I like the "newer" Majestics with the leg extensions. But my real all time favorite is a Crown #4. Built from the 1900s till 1974 they are light and can hold my 12x20 Deardorff.
