I am looking for a 8x10" back for my 8x10" Grover. I only currently have the 5x7" back. After doing a little research, I have come to find out that it takes a "Universal" back size of:

outer dimension = 11 5/8" sq
inner rebated area = 11" sq x 1/8" thick
distance between centres of pins = 10 3/8"

Is this same as the 2-D back. I have heard tale that it is also a "Universal" back. I just want to confirm this before I purchase one.

Thanks,
Chris Maness

The Universal may be from a Century Universal, though I don't have one to confirm compatibility.
Just a thought...

I believe you are correct in 2D having same dimensions.

A Kodak 5x7 2D back will fit a B&J drop bed 5x7 but the pins are in different places so you have to change them.

My 8x10 Kodak 2D back measures 1/16" less than yours for the outer and pin centers and 1/8" less for the rebates.

I've never heard of a "universal" (lower case) back for 8x10 cameras. I would have thought a "Universal" (upper case) back was a back for a Universal camera. But I could be wrong, I don't know everything there is to know about 8x10 cameras.

Did you use a tape measurer or a ruler? That is really close enough for a measurement error. The little "hook" on the edge of a tape measurer is about 1/16" thick.

Thanks,
Chris

ya this is same as 2D dimensions. It is good to use.

Used a ruler.
I actually have two 8x10 Kodak 2ds with an additional Kodak 2D 5x7 reduction back.
I just went back and measured all three backs:
outer dimension = 11 9/16" sq on all 3 backs
inner rebated area = (each slightly different but sq.) 10 31/32" sq, 11" sq, and 11 1/16 sq x 1/8" thick (all 3 backs)
distance between centers of pins = 10 5/16" on all on all 4 sides of all 3 backs

I just went back and measured all three backs:
outer dimension = 11 9/16" sq on all 3 backs
inner rebated area = (each slightly different but sq.) 10 31/32" sq, 11" sq, and 11 1/16 sq x 1/8" thick (all 3 backs)

I might have to try using a metal quality ruler. I am also wondering if the difference of 1/16 split by the two posts would be only off by 1/32 of an inch. I would imagine the clip would still be able to latch. All of the other measurements are not as critical as the pins. Others have vouched that this should work. I think I will buy the back and see if it fits. Worst case I could just turn around and sell it if it does not fit.

I measured it again while it was on the camera, and I noticed the holes are oval to accept some error in the position of the pins, so it looks like it should fit.

Thanks a ton for your careful measurements.

I got my back yesterday. It almost fits, but I have to fudge it a little to get it to lock down. The pins are too close to pull and re-drill. If I did, I am afraid the old hole would overlap the new hole. I guess I can just live with it until I get the OEM back.
