So the GG image appears right side up down under?
Like the inverted font!

That's very funny. Somehow the GG seems to take over and work upside down no matter what! If you look at it long enough, your brain will invert it the way it does with our eyes. ;-)

Self portrait with camera. Reflection in ornament on the christmas tree. Four minute exposure - I stood fairly still but I think you can see the ghost of a dog that was laying on the rug behind me that got bored and left.

Good lord. If you had a lens that provided sufficient coverage, how big a plate could you shoot in that thing?

Also, where did you get your pot-growing tent? It seems like something like that could be useful for setting up a garage darkroom.

Hey Barninny,
From what I've tested right now, it could shoot 24x36, but maybe larger as I haven't field tested all of my lenses. I'm hoping for 30x40. You can find the tent on ebay...like everything else. ;) After I've got another shoot through it, I'll post the results.

No zippers on the inside, just the outside. It's better to work with an assistant with this. Working by yourself takes much longer to set up and shoot.

Thanks, Thom. Figured I'd inject some humor.
That's a Deardorff V11 11x14 that I recently had restored. It's connected to a modified Saltzman studio stand with a beefy Hercules head. The lens is a 405mm Kodak Portrait Lens which, in this focal length, was never offered with a shutter (too big). However, the gent I bought it from ingeniously connected it to an Ilex 5 shutter via a conical wood adaptor he made. Huge and heavy, but works!

If you (or anyone else) are interested in reading about the Deardorff V11 restoration (lots of pictures), it can be seen here: http://tmblr.co/ZIVyVsiizsTH

Hope you got some nice shots on that trip. My LF from the roof are awful, too much shake from the wind. If you're up for a photowalk I'm heading to commissioners and cherry to shoot the old studios and factories tomorrow.

I thought for sure I had posted this here but I went back through several times and can't find it. So here it is - if it's a duplicate, I apologize. That's me with my Canham 14x17 at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. The lens is a 355 G-Claron. I also have a 450 Nikkor-M for it. This Canham takes the larger Toyo sized lens boards rather than the Sinar sized ones Keith has standardized on now, thus the "Toyo-View" label on the lensboard adapter. The cool thing about the camera, to me anyway, is the fact that I know every person who's owned it since its creation, including the maker. I met Keith Canham at the View Camera conference in Springfield. I just met Clay Harmon, who commissioned it, at Photostock this summer. And I bought it from Robb Kendrick, who bought it from Clay.

Maybe "Self with Camera, Oregon" would be more accurate. It's funny, I've been to Austin, Texas and Austin, Nevada, and even Granger, Idaho, but as far as I know I've never passed through Austin, Oregon. Maybe it's time for a pilgrimage. Just where is Austin anyway?

Were these portraits taken with Large Format cameras?

Not mine. The only large format camera I own is the one you see in my hand there. It's a Deardorff Special, made in 1979, when I was eight years old. It's a fine camera. My only minor complaints about it are that it's a little heavy and also that the little butterfly knobs on the front standard hurt my fingers when it's cold. But then, if it was perfect, I wouldn't have anything to complain about!

It was nice having the boys help with the tripod. The previous trip to Yosemite with the boys, we hiked up towards the top of Yosemite Falls -- one boy carried the pod and another the film holders. I kept the holders with the rest of the camera gear this time -- I needed the exercise!

I'm just a tad under 6 ft 3 inches (188 cm +/-). In your signature line I see Sarasota mentioned. Is that where you live? FYI, I was born in that fine city before it was too crowded or too expensive.

Regarding the dark cloth with white exterior. I've used that for about 20 years or so. It has weights sewed into the corners to keep it from flying around in the wind.

The weights don't add too much to the overall weight, thus being sewn in. The key is to not have the corners of the cloth flopping around in the wind and crack your ground glass or the lens. That has been my biggest fear.

My parents moved there in 1959, and I was born in Sarasota in early 1960. My father was a NASA electrical engineer and he was a liaison to a sub-contractor east of Sarasota. He would spend a few days each week in Sarasota then travel to the Cape for a few more days each week. After Apollo 11, he was reassigned to projects on the West coast of the US. I spent my Summers swimming at Siesta Key and Lido Beach, and further south at Turtle Beach. Nice times.

From the Chamonix website (for F1):

"Its most predominant feature is the added base and asymmetrical tilts of the rear standard which makes the use of the camera so much easier when applying Scheimpflug principle in landscape and architecture photography."

and

"045F1 camera has its special ground glass with four dotted lines. No matter which way the opening faces, an object placed on the dotted line on the ground glass will stay in focus as rear tilt is applied."

So then this is a BETTER camera with more features than the N-2? Why is it cheaper then?

Nope, cannot not read it all. But as I understand is: all movements are done with the rear panel, but in most situations (architecture) I want to keep the back parallel, so this asymmetric tilts are of limited value, or do I misunderstand the principle ?

Best,

You may have to travel back to the '90s, or to Detroit. The new post-apocalyptic world looks more like a theme park of glass luxury towers.

Erik says that pic was right around here (http://paulraphaelson.com/portfolios/wilderness/#17). I don't think the camera was set up for that shot, but it was probably pointed at the same building.

Interesting, I don't have that top view finder and use the wire frame finder when I shoot hand held with my Super Graphic, I find it works well with a 90mm or even a 203mm/210mm as well as my usual 135mm or 150mm, I compose on the GG screen and the rangefinders broken.

The viewfinder has parallax correction and it's more suitable for hand held use. Have you got a shoe on top right camera's corner?
As you can see, I just tapered the viewfinder with papertape in order to reduce size while I'm using a 6X9 Horseman rollfilm back. I know there are frames in various format (and lens lenght) for thet viewfinder but papertape is cheaper.

No there's never been a top shoe on mine, I have used the similar viewfinder on my Crown Graphic. However I've found the Wire frame finders to be accurate and they have parallax correction as well, the advantage is they are good regardless of focal length and also with front tilt or rise. I use mine with quite tight framing and find it easy and fast to use.

If anyone is wondering where this trestle is, it's spans Ladner Creek which was part of the old Coquihalla RR, abandoned in '59. And if you're wondering what focusing hood that is, it's an old BTZS who's rubberized coating has flaked off over the years. I actually prefer it this way. In extreme minus temps, the hood would become stiff as a board. Now it doesn't!

Thanks Randy! I'm not working in there any longer, but am going to spend December going through the thousands of negatives I shot there (35mm, 120, 45 & 810) and try to finally get a start on getting this all finished. There was a ton of digital too, and that's been pretty well sorted out, but the bulk of the B&W hasn't made it past proof sheet stage.

Started there in 2006.

The Travelers section of my site shows the direct captures.
