Stephane, I truly admire your work.
Beauuuutiful portrait, Stephane. Petzval goodness aside, it has a wonderfully timeless quality to it. (Could be the 50s, the 70s, the today). :)

I like the inclusion of the workshop in this shot. Also a fan of the somewhat subdued color of the film (never been a big fan of overly vibrant/saturated colors). Is this on one of the Kodak Portra films?

Thanks, all! The choice to choice to leave the cloth backgrounds as they were was a deliberate one. The winkles I actually kind of like, but I'm less happy with the long vertical and horizontal crease lines in the fabric from when it was folded in storage.

Ben, if the pleated folds are an issue. store it bunched up instead of folded. That will increase the wrinkles (maybe good or bad), but it will also eliminate folding.
That's the only way to store a muslin other than just hanging it.

Rachael often arrives with her own props...
Ben,
Rachael's props all seem unrelated and a bit chaotic, yet with all of that and her interesting ink, it makes my eyes keep wandering around the photo. They can't seem to center on anything.... wait, there it is. The eyes. They remind me of Olivia Wilde.
Nice shot of a beautiful model.

For som reason I think it worked fine in the photo of Rachael (that girl is a piece of art herself :) are those tatooes real?) But regarding to the other portrait I agree. Is it possible to move your subjects/models/sitters a bit away from the background?
Great portraits anyway
Alex and Stephane. Beautifull portraits

Nice shot of a beautiful model.
There is no underlying relation for the chosen props, apart from a kind of deliberate absurdity, although I did at least attempt to arrange everything in a pleasing composition. Rachael's sarcastic comment before I took the photo was, "Does it look avant-garde enough?" My reply was, "More like avant-yard sale." But if you put a phenomenally attractive model in just about any setting, you can make it work.

The ink is all real, and she's a professional tattoo artist as well. I'm also ok with the background in the first image with Rachael and the third image with the other model. The second image, where there are pronounced vertical lines from crease folds I'm not very happy with the background. And yes, I can move the them further away from the backdrops (see some of my earlier work in the March and February 2011 portrait threads). In the case of the second model though, I actually had her leaning up against the backdrop and the wall behind it to steady herself. She's a bit more jittery than most, inherently energetic, and even when she's seated it's hard for her to hold still enough for the 1/2 - 1 sec long exposures.

Yes, you made it work here.
In my experience, props tend to impose a theme on the image. With your "avant yard sale", it keeps the viewer (at least this one) looking for a connection. The longer the connection to the image, I think yields a better chance it has to form a pleasing opinion by the viewer.
Then again, maybe I'm just so accustomed to chaos at work, it's creeping into my artistic tastes. :)

The issue of props or wrinkled backgrounds should be viewed with regard to whether the image works or not. Do the props contribute to the sense of who the sitter is or what they're about? Is there a story relative to the props that is something the viewer is supposed to be translating? For the background, does hanging a wrinkled sheet contribute or detract from the overall statement that this effort represents?
A lot of times we make decisions about what's in a photograph that simply correspond to our tastes, or the equipment we have available, without regard to the how cohesive the image might be in the eyes of the viewer. We need to remember that they don't have the background information, and without that, its important to bear in mind that the images that work tend to have fewer distracting or confusing elements.
If a sitter brings props, I would shoot some with and without to see what works, because surprsises do happen (usually discussed beforehand, actually). For backgrounds, if you're serious about portraiture, you'll start a collection, starting with painter's dropcloths, and advancing to nice thick muslins. The tools of good photographers go beyond the glass and film. You don't want your message to be, "I don't want to bother with any of that", rather, you want the message to be: "I'll go to some lengths to render a quality image." Just opinions, of course...

I can see what you are saying, but I like the window edge as it is. It and the horizontal bar between window panes work together and tie in with the pattern of the sitter's shirt, at least to my eye.

This looks vaguely familiar. Is this a recycled photo or just a shot of one of your "go to" models? I've got a model about twice that size that has this pose mastered. It's always nice to have a model that knows when to sit still for the photo.

Trying out a new lens hybrid; took the very-scratched-up elements out of an old Velostigmat 12" f/4.5 with the fuzziometer ring, and replaced them with the less-scratched-up coated elements of a 12" f/4.5 Raptar. Wollensak must have changed the spacing, because this is at full sharp, and it gets even mooshier as you dial in more diffusion. This one's going to take more work; so far the Velosi-Raptar doesn't hold up to the original Velostigmat...

I'm shooting a roughly equal amount of 5x7 and 8x10 with the camera, and my preferences tend toward longer focal lengths for portrait work. I'm finding I like the Vesta 14" (360mm) better for 5x7 than 8x10 (although the Vesta 14" works fine with 8x10).
Won't be buying either a Kodak Portrait 305 or 405 anytime soon though for a simple matter of economics! Guns or butter? Lenses or film? Right now the balance has swung toward buying more film.

Jim, I knew you'd catch me and give me a bad time. I put a low-ball number in and got it on you know where. For this project, I think it might be what I want where I can get the feet as well as the face in sharp detail, and then still get some ethereal qualities to the background. Plus, with it having a shutter, I could use the deardorff and feel at home. Hopefully, this doesn't compromise our relationship...;)

Absolutely gorgeous, and a touching photograph! Is this a scan of a negative or of a print? I can't believe how smooth and rich the tones are, how the boys held themselves in good humor; even the dog looks like he's behaving himself!

John,
Thank you for continuing your farm worker series. I really enjoyed your previous posts. Having been around some of Florida orchards, I can compare to a similar work enviroment while being thousands of miles away. In my opinion, I find both shots here well suited. You have put your subjects in focus and in front of their working environment. I think the sharp focus on them highlights their pride and experience, while the out of focus fields in the background clearly fade away... something they would do in a productive sense if not for the hard work these folks do.
Nice work.

Thanks Jim, Mike, Jon! I have to admit that I applied just a tad of softness/diffusion with a Nik Software plug-in for lightroom, but other than that it's straightforward. Of course, I like the touch of softness so much I'm not sure how I'm going to get it on the darkroom print!
It was done with a Rodentstock Sironar-N 150mm lens, window light with just a tad of tungsten fill light from the front right. I'm guessing around f/11-16. Took a bunch with a petzval, but just didn't get this moment. Still waiting for my adapter from SK Grimes for my 9.5 inch Wollensak Velostigmat II. Still don't have it for tomorrow's model shoot. Darn! May try that Meniscus lens in shutter though...

Stephane,
What are using for a background? I find the reflection interesting. You've got it to blur while most of your subject is in focus.
I'm not familiar with much lighting other than sunlight, but would it change the reflection if you were to use a modeling light or strobe on the subject, with another light on the background (from top or side), through a darker colored gel?

yes.
- you can move model away from background
- you can flag part of light and block where it hits background
- not using highly reflective background
moving light away will do you no good at all, b/c it will in fact decrease apparent size , make light harsher and specular highlights on background will be worse.

I use sequin fabric, which looks like that:
http://img.en.china.cn/0/0,0,438,1909,600,450,b140d0a5.jpg
I used it successfully before, but I cant remember how I did it.
What I can change is
- position of light.
- angle of the camera with the background.
- model distance (but should not be much or the background becomes a mush).
I'll try again and take notes...

yes, but it wont do you any good. Think of this as a mirror. If you wont see highlights - you wont see all the funky wee circles that you using it for.
You need to move light closer in (or increase apparent size by other means), then
- highlights will become larger
but if you move light closer (which still increases apparent size) there is one extra effect you will gain - light falloff will become much more sharp-ish (inverse square law) so you may get less light travelling to and thus - from background. Only problem it will be utterly tricky as its got such a high reflective ability. So i'd still move model out just a bit, to gain at least half of the stop difference (better yet - 1.5). Meter for incident light on her face. Then meter reflected light from background. Move. Repeat till happy ;)

Cheers Mike...shot at Kingscliff NSW. Follow his glance...
I wouldn't mind heading out to Alice to a few of the mission communities to shoot some plates. Where did your partner work?
Here's another portrait of Dane. 8x10 Wet plate collodion on black glass but shot with the Cooke 18" soft focus.

Rushed photos of my grandparents this afternoon. Only had a couple minutes between my arriving home from work and them leaving to go home.
5x7 + Dagor 180 at f/11. Reduced the contrast when scanning. Adox CHS100 developed in APH09 (aka Rodinal).

Craig, she spent three months working at Alice Springs base hospital and loved working with the local Aboriginal population. She wants to do remote area nursing. When I drove to pick her up I took some pictures at Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm. I posted my best shot from Simpsons Gap here in the LF landscape thread last year.

Des, through an Eidoscope#2 (?)
She guessed my age by thinking only (at least) 45 years old men use big cameras...
That was a photo/drinking session that started at 7pm and finished at 4am... Ou lala!
18 sheets later of 8x10 fomapan 100, still busy developing them...
Only 2 days ago, and I feel like I am 45...
And the funny thing is that she is very tall, and I felt like a child all the time!

This one is a fairly modern coated f/4.5 barrel lens with a lovely 18-bladed diaphragm, mounted on a Sinar board. It's my favorite lens for portraits. It has a quality like Velvet.

You guys are right, commercial ektar it was, wide open at 6.3. Sorry for being obtuse. Richelle, the redhead, is a wonderful vocalist. I've seen her take over a room on many occasions. I try to serve as her accompanist periodically and its an adventure.

Amazing surfer, film maker, writer and mate Johnny Abegg visited so we could shoot a plate in preparation, and in honour of, his debut short-film release of 'Two Weeks' on Vimeo and Youtube.
http://www.twoweeksfilm.wordpress.com/
Johnny has created something truly masterful with his movie and I feel honoured to have been able to share a small part of his world by representing it on an 8"x10" piece of black glass, coated with collodion and sensitized with silver.
It's World Wet-Plate Day today....what an apt day to share!

Wow ken that tessar produced a nice image. Of course kudos must go to the hads of the photographer. But I like how the tessar made a nice in-out of focus image without going swirly or fuzzing the ears and nose.

Yes - I really like Tessars for portraits.
Here, the lens was set to around f/16: enough to keep the subject in focus, but no more.
