Since no one has praised a book for a while, I thought I'd recommend BYSTANDER A History of Street Photography - HC 1994, SC 2001, edited by Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz. A fine selection of photographers and photographs with excellent and abundant text support. Features all the ones you'd expect and a few you might not (like Strand). It's out of print but ABE has copies albeit on the spensive side...(sorry, I picked up the last under $80 HC :p )

I thought I saw Meyerowitz quoted as saying he would include Vivian Maier if he was doing the book again..

Thanks for the link Anthony. There's quite a few others on this forum. I think that she will turn out to be one of the great street photographers of the last century...
