I recently purchased and took completely apart a Zone VI Camera in order to get ideas for building my own 8 x 10 camera.

the wood parts are no problem. And I have a machinist friend who can make many of the metal parts.

Nevertheless, if there are off the shelf parts available I would certainly take advantage of them.

Specifically, the rack and pinion system would definitely be easier to purchase than to have made. Boston Gear makes those systems. I am just curious as to the specifics for the ones used in the Zone VI camera.

Any other off the shelf products?

For parts, you might try Calumet or Richard Ritter. For DIY, this should be useful: http://jbhphoto.com/vcam/vcams1.htm

I had emailed Richard Ritter about the rack and pinion and he said they were custom made for Zone VI back in the Vermont period. I was trying to get a piece of the rack for a 4x10 back I had made.

McMaster-Carr sells racks and spur gears. I was going to send them a set from a Zone VI camera and have them determine the size that I needed. However, a size has been suggested to me by someone and that is what I will probably use.

Nevertheless, for all other applications I would think it would be a simple matter to send them what you want to duplicate and they would easily be able to duplicate it as their offerings are quite extensive.
