These are the best you've ever posted. Now if you could get focus on her near eye and not on her shoulder or breast you'd be spot on. Shoot it again and get that right. You have great subject matter.

Thanks guys. It's actually been a couple years since I've shot any large format.

As per the focus: she couldn't stand dead-still, the tripod was wobbly, I knocked the camera when loading the holder, the lens is way shallow at f/2.8, and I was shooting with a spare darkslide as shutter! I'll brace her next time.

Scott, nice shot. Get him to lean forward a little and shoot from slightly further above him aiming down.

Back to earth. Giovanni bellini was using this isolation technique in 1500 AD. Andrea Solari at about the same time did Christ on a background tied to the door jamb with string and tennis balls (yes we had tennis in 1500).
I had another go at it with some factory workers (https://picasaweb.google.com/cjbroadbent/LocationPortraits?authkey=Gv1sRgCMWFrJzQsNyS2wE&feat=directlink)(not LF) for Artemide, using a smaller background for more factory. My clients need to show that they actually make the stuff in Italy.

Great series! The man with the lamp is perfect!

My daughters and I visited the Kiton factory a few years ago as we spent the summer touring what may be the greatest country in the world :)
The people at Kiton were so kind to us, we spent a great day at the factory.

The following year we did a trip again and visited Borrelli, which was wonderful, but it just isn't Kiton, nothing is like a Kiton.
And nothing, is like your work!

Very nice, and a bit unusual.

Nice separation of the high values, which I suspect is even better in the real print; it's easy to see texture and folds in the white shirts. At least on my monitor it comes out as a high key portrait, which is a bit different from what one more often sees. This one really has emphasis from about zones VI-VIII (again, based on an uncalibrated simple office grade but fairly nice LCD monitor.)

Even the foliage in the more central area around the family is of higher tonality than foliage normally prints, which gives it a wonderful open, airy look. The darker edges (whether that's just how the light was or it's from very skillful edge burning doesn't matter) give the impression of a "light bubble" in the surrounding forest.

The more I look at this one the more I see and like.

It's a lovely portrait, Bob. You are definitely pushing the envelope for dilute developers! I've always suspected 1ml of 510-Pyro concentrate will develop a roll or 8x10 sheet of film, regardless of dilution, but an 11x14 sheet at 1:1000 with rotary development is truly extreme. I would worry about the developer oxidizing before it could do its work. Was there a lot of general stain? Fascinating!

Yes, u are right, 60 mins are too much. I think 1.5:1000 30 mins is the limit. I'm really happy this developer can make the ortho film full of grey tone.

Some verbiage by way of explanation...

I've photographed these crews in the midst of harvest for websites many times over the years, and always found the experience to be an eye-opener. For one, these people work harder than any gringo would ever consider, but also, there's an infectuous positive spirit that seems to be present in a lot of the crews. There seemed to be a spirituality to it, a sense that there's a redemptive quality in working hard.

It occurred to me that straight-on, large format portraiture might be able to capture the pride and sense of purpose that I was seeing. When I started the project in 1995, logistics were difficult (no cell phones then!) and it floundered, although some prints got circulated that would get surprising reactions periodically. In the last year, though, I've managed to drum up support for the idea from a number of vineyard outfits in the valley, and now have quite a few crews lined up, the next one being comprised of women only.

In planning the shoots, I've experimented with exotic lenses and other formats and found that to my eye a fairly simple reportage approach seemed to work best. In particular, I wanted sharpness at the feet and in the ground around them, as it seems to add to the "Here I Am," sort of look. These are from the 2nd shoot this year, and a lot is being learned such that I may actually get good at it after a couple more tries.

Its all a matter of feeling my way along and making adjustments as we go. Thanks for your interest.

Since you already have phenidone and ascorbic acid, you might consider the following developer:

A

Glycol 60ml
Phenidone 7g
Ascorbic acid 1g
Glycol to 100ml

B

sodium carbonate 20% solution

Dilute 1:2:100

Develop APHS EI 12 6min, 75F

This is the best developer I've tried for getting pictorial contrast with lith films. I really admire your work, and hope to see more of it. Thanks for posting.

I had a line like that when I first started using my Heidelberg scanner.

For the life of me I can't recall his name at this very second, but the forum member who services Heidelberg wrote after seeing the line and told me how to access the senor and lens to clean them. it worked.

If you can access the lens, clean that next. If that does not work, the sensor.

The clothes were probably hand made. Probably a good indicator is those shoes. The lace up part or are those some sort of sock. They both are wearing them. Probably all the rage in the " blank" :)

I'm going to guess 1905-1910. High victorian was just starting to slip in that era. Wicker was very arts and crafts. I'll let others argue either side and not be much wrong I think.

I talked to some friends who are into Civil War Reenacting and know a good deal about Victorian era garb. Their guess is somewhere 1910-1919, possibly a little earlier. Their clues are in the attire. Compared to earlier Victorian dress, these skirts are shorter, plainer and flatter and the sleeves are not as poofy.

I believe the lens was wide open. I had some back tilt that kept the coat too sharp and my scanning process doesn't do the lens and very thin negative justice. It seemed softer on the ground glass. Are there any favorite film suggestions for soft lenses?

I have finally put my 8x10" Master View to use. :D
This is HP5+ developed in ABC, contact printed on Lodima.
14" f/6.3 Kodak Anastigmat Ektar, used at f/8 in both cases.
The scans are just an approximation of how the prints look. My cheap scanner cannot pick up fine highlight details, while blacks in the prints are deeper than any computer monitor can display. The tie in the first picture is a deep black, but its fine texture is still clearly defined. I love this paper. And I love this format. :)

I had a small soft box (0 EV) on my righthand side and a colleague on the left holding silver reflector to soften the shadows a bit. There was also a large soft box (+2 EV) on the left behind the sitter pointing at the background which adds the slight gradient to it and that strong highlight on the face.

In another thread, I stated that using a sharp lens, allows you to have your cake and eat it too. While most portraitists prefer the soft fuzzies, I always like to start with the sharpest image possible and if required for aesthetic reasons, diffusion can later be applied in printing or even when taking through the use of a diffusion filter. I think your portrait shows the beauty of a sharp image where the subject and not the technique, is the object of the portrait. Well done.

I agree that sharp is fine in a portrait. Mush is an aquired taste. There are ways of softening a photograph without loosing the sharp look, like printing on textured paper. How many of you print your lovley swirlies, most of them are made to show off on a computer screen. Anti digital, digital images.

I like it Scott, if the exposure was less the background would've just gone black. Mabee just print down the face a touch to get a little more tone. I do like the quality of light though. The brighter cheeks draw me right into the eyes and freckles.

Keep the exposure but develop a bit less, would be my suggestion. Both being already done, I agree to burn in the cheeks a bit, but overall I too like it.

OR - try 1/2 to 1 grade lower contrast paper.

Thanks, all! I'll probably post more here as I get them scanned. It's been a busy two weekends of shooting. I'm in the process of setting up a new studio and these are some test images I made to be able to show potential clients.

I'm a format and technology agnostic though, so only some of the work there is large format, but my Deardorff 8x10 and Century Studio 10A are by far my favorite cameras to work with. :)
