Did you compensate for bellows draw?

6-1/2 inches of bellows

Is the aperture scale on the shutter correct for this lens? It should show values from 5.6 to 64.

Is it a Copal 1 shutter?

6-1/2 inches of bellows
That value (6.5" = 165mm) is less than the flange focal length of the lens (174.4mm). How did you measure it? (Diff is only 9.4mm = ~3/8".)

Was your subject at "infinity"?

subject was 44 inches from lens board, and 52 inches from film plane.

That's only about a 26mm extension from the infinity position, which should not require any bellows compensation.

I'm at a loss to explain the problem.

To answer one of your original questions... Any lens will work with any media.

Some are optimized for one application or another (e.g. macro), but professional lenses like Schneiders will all perform well in all uses.

Have you tested your statement on this lens?

I am considering to buy it although it's quite an investment because at 180mm it would make a great wide angle on 8x10 with its huge coverage. Then I would also have a macro lens which it doesn't waste...

Sergio, according to the brochure the lens covers 375 mm at 1:1 and f/22. This means 187.5 mm at infinity. See https://web.archive.org/web/20121019062914/http://www.schneiderkreuznach.com/pdf/foto/sr_ma.pdf Not a general purpose lens for 8x10.

Thanks Dan. Apparently it can be used on 8x10 only for 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 Magnification Ratios...
