I retired in 1999 and moved into a smaller house in 2008. Since my move I have been shooting old barns and farms, abadnon buildings, old depots, almost anything old, with vintage equipment. I have an 8x10 Deardoff about my age, born 1935, and my new camera is a Super Speed Graflex. Most lens are Ektar, with a few Wollensak in the mix. Film is Ilford Delta 100.
Here is a shot that started the barn and farms collection. This barn is what remains of a dariry farm, my development can be seen in the background.
Shot with my Deardoff and a 10 inch Ektar.

This is the reason I love photographing old things. This is an old abandon house covered in wisteria and wild flowere in the forground. The photo was made several years ago and the house is now gone! Some things deserve to be saved by photography, and I think this is one.
Made with a Zone VI camera several years ago.

This is another photograph for history. Whoever lived in this house was a friendly sort. Why else would a hand well pump be put in the front yard.
Made with my Graflex and 127mm lens.

Does this photograph show something old, no, not really? However, it is historical in that it a photograph of Burlington Industries Corporate Office in Greensboro, NC. When this was made with a Zone VI with a roll film back it records the headquarters of the largest textile manufacturing operation in the USA, employing thousands. In addition, Burlington was my largest customer during my 40 years in the US Textile Industry. To-day it is gone, out of business, this building torn down. This property is now the home of a shopping center. History needs to be recorded.

I've posted a lot of old things elsewhere, but here's something a little different. It's an old fire axe ("Truck 5") that my father picked up somewhere along the way.

The root cellar is one of my favorites, not technically, but subject wise. This was along the Salmon river in Idaho. It has part of an Omar Khayyam poem in the concrete, but when people see the 1962 they immediately think BOMB SHELTER! I think it was just some reclusive beatniks living in a little cabin there that overlooks the river.

Couldn't agree more. Keep it up. I am trying the same thing in Alberta.
"This is another photograph for history. Whoever lived in this house was a friendly sort. Why else would a hand well pump be put in the front yard".
The well is below the house. The Out-House is out the back. When they moved the Out-House, the well dried up. :).
Love both shots.

I used the rodinal 1:50 for 11 minutes at 68F. I may have derated the film speed a bit, though it was a long exposure and hard to say exactly.
I would love to get more Acros in the sleeves, even sheets in a box would be fine.
I've got so much film in the fridge though it'll be a while before I'm shopping for film again.

I think you are referring to the figure at the top of my lighthouse. Sadly, no its not a person. For some reason the owner stuck a silver statue on the top gantry. Something about the lighthouse being haunted. Tend to agree, I was hoping it was not too noticeable.

It will have to be some gaming in Las Vegas Nevada because I agree with Jim, there is nothing worth shooting with LF/ULF in the real sin city. I don't even bother bringing a camera with me.
I've spent about 8 years of my life in Las Vegas and never realized it but Jim's right. It's like there's a 15 mile radius of uninteresting subject matter. Get across that line and you have Rhylite, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, Rainbow Canyon, Amargosa River valley, etc. I must've stared at Michael's LuLu shot for a full two minutes trying to figure where it was.

I like that a lot. Of course I like old radios and cameras (the toaster just fits.)
I'm not sure about the lamp, though. Some table radios ran on batteries but I doubt toasters ever did as the current drain would be enormous in use. And if there's electrical wiring for the toaster, there would be for an electric lamp. Just a personal idea, but I think I'd try it with a similar vintage electric table lamp.
Of course there's no rule that says these things have to be the same vintage. I think that's just something that occurred to me in viewing this one, as it inspired an interest in doing some things like this myself.

Thanks! It wasn't readily apparent, but the table was made in the 1920's, the camera in the 1930's, the toaster in the 1940's, and the Radio was from the 1950's. Each piece was from a different decade. The Lamps was supposed to be pre 1920, even though it was newer, because I don't have an actual lamp from 1910 to 1920.

Each piece was from a different decade.
Hi Gary,
Those of us who viewed all of those items as "modern" during our early years would likely miss the subtlety.
I would have put the radio much earlier than the 1950s. Do you have a model number?
Nice shot.

Thanks Andrew. This truck may be beyond Jim's considerable talent for salvaging.
I do have a question here. How do you get much larger images in the message. If I do a jpeg larger than 175 kb the forum page won't take it. Would love to put up some large enough to see so if anyone can post directions on how to do it I would appreciate it.
Dakota: the image is stored offsite at a place like flickr or smugmug. Not only can you present the images larger here, the viewer doesn't have to click on the image and then return afterwards, which can be annoying. Sounds like a great workshop, by the way.

Not sure why the sign on the left side of the image looks so blurry. It is sharp when viewed in PS at 100% and in the print made from the same scan. I think it may be a moire/screen thing because of the chain link fence. Other theories happily entertained. This was not my first LF image, but maybe the third or fourth. Made last December.

Have been shooting "falling-down" bldgs throughout rural VA (wisner 4x5 field) and have just recently found out thru locals that Counties are now prompting land-owners to knock down these these historical structures as a safety issue -- so lets all keep on shooting to document what was for others and ourselves to see and remember...thanx for listening.

I have been photographing these old building for a while and now many are gone. Some in just a short while. We will all miss this part of our history.

That's a dang good texture shot. Are most of your images scans of prints or negatives? Or do you say specifically when its a scan of a print?

This is my first photograph with "my" new Wollensak 11 ½ inch Verito at F4, made with my 810 Deardoff at half frame, 5 x 8. It is a shed with old farm equipment at Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. I am not close to mastering the Jim Galli method for exposure, but can use the lens caps method for one + second exposure, used for this shot.
After years and dollars to make the sharpest photographs possible, I really like the look from the old lens I am trying to use today.

I visited my old friend yesterday, we attended school together back in the 1950’s. He is the owner of a wonderful place to visit or shop, Turner Hardware in Mooresville, NC. It is the only place he ever worked. Turner’s was opened in 1899 by two Turner brothers. The hardware is in the original building. I struggled with the light and all photos were made with exposures of 8 to 15 seconds with Ilford HP4. The camera used was the refurbished Kodak full plate camera with a Schneider 121mm lens.
The photos may not be good, but my visit was great.

I went down to Limerock park in CT last weekend for the annual historic races. Big drool factor. I shot about 200 digital photos, 6 rolls of 120 in my rolleiflex, and 30 sheets of sheet film in a speed graphic. So far I've unloaded the digital files and processed 5 sheets of 4x5. Here's a couple keepers from the first few negatives.
The aerodyamics of cars of the era are very special. WWII aircraft skills were employed to make the cars slide through the air efficiently and fast. Later on, as speeds increased, downforce became a goal, and styles changed forever.

A couple of weeks ago we had very bad thunder storm in our area. The land our new development occupies was once a family dairy farm. A couple of years ago additional development was planned. The economics stopped the project, leaving three homes, a barn, plus a milk barn abandoned, now owned by the bank. Here are photos made this week after the storm.

Wonderful subject! Have any of the inside?
No, but that's an interesting question.
I actually shot this back in the late 90s when I was doing photography, then let the hobby slide for over a decade until my girlfriend (now fiance) who's a huge fan of art got me interested again. I was going through my old negatives for a show I was invited to (sort of an "art of people who are also in our community" kind of thing.) I printed this one and another old one, one newly shot 6x6 negative.
The store is still there, or was last time I was in my home town. "Blue Springs" is a community outside there, the small town of Elizabethton, TN. I hadn't thought of trying to get access to the inside but now that you mention it I might try to find who owns it and see if I could arrange it. Looking at this image also makes me want to go back and do some much closer shots of details of sections, the door, windows etc.
EDIT: I see an oddity in my wording - she didn't "barter for her parents" but rather they sent her on their behalf to barter butter and eggs they produced on the farm for other goods they needed. ;)
I would call that bartering for her parents. Cant choose them, sell them, trade them in, buy them, fire them, escape from them. Sad but true.
