This thing is standing on a field close to where i live. I have wanted to photograph it for a long time, but haven't found the right time to do it. If the light is not right everything gets really flat, and no subject separation. I finally got around to make an exposure of it. I have made a 20x24 silver gelatin print of the negative split toned in sepia/selenium that i have on the wall at home, looks awesome!

Got the urge to burn some to see if I could remember how. Wished I would have used a red or yellow filter. May be over exposed a weee bit.

I don't know why but it seems a "human" portrait, maybe it's the round frame above the cannon... I'd just prefer to burn the left side

Yes, Fort Stevens, specifically Battery Russell. There is a lot to explore there.
Austin,
I like the bunker image. Not sure exactly why ! But it grows on you.
I think it's the composition and contrast - darkness of the bunker and bright clouds.

Hi Merg,
I followed in your good footsteps. My photo was sometime in the mid-seventies.
I never printed it till now, if you can believe that.
I also took a closeup photo of the church which I will work on and post when time permits. That image is at a very slight angle whereas yours is head on. The lighting, shadows and composition of yours work beautifully for the subject.
I can't even remember taking the photos or how I happened upon the church. I looked on the web and saw the church now has a steeple !
Maybe we should post these in the church thread.

Mike, I love the subject matter, composition. I've a definite weakness for old metal. 'Was at a Western Museum for such critters - 1919 Curtiss Jenny, Curtis-Wright, Wacos, DeHavelins - and each piece operates - not just for show. I'll enjoy it every time you post such an image.

Thanks for asking. This one was July 1998 with TriX 4x5. I started there a couple of years before and continued until about 2006. I used just about every film and format at one time or another in and around Claunch. Everyone should have some secret spot to go to over the years! (Maybe not so secret as I thought?)

Good article, but the car has been moved. I'll swing by next summer and make a final run at it.
I got my sheets back from Citizen's Photo yesterday, and scanned them. They came out OK. The photo I should have used more exposure to compensate for reciprocity was pretty faint on the negative, but it ended up scanning nicely (the stairs.) All in all, I'm happy with what I got but will start using Acros for this.
I started 4x5 in 1995 with a Cambo monorail, and quickly moved to a Shen Hao folder. It was abandoned farm houses that got me started with LF. There are thousands of abandoned houses and even larger buildings on the Northern Plains. I still have a great interest in them! Never know what you're going to find inside.
In 1907 the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul railroad was building two tracks towards the Missouri River. The southern one went west from Yankton, SD. It ended up stopping at Platte, SD after the decision was made to cross the river on the northern line at Chamberlain, SD. The southern line slowly faded as passenger traffic was lost, then packages/shipments, the cattle business was lost to trucks in the 1950s, and there just wasn't much grain grown along this line. The tracks are now dormant. In 1907 the railroad built a very large three story brick hotel in Geddes, SD and named it the Padley Hotel. At that time the thinking was the tracks would cross the river near there, replacing the ferry boat. A hundred years ago Geddes seemed destined to become a regional city. The hotel did a steady but not very profitable business with traveling salesmen from the railroad, and it had a very fancy dining room used by locals. The manager of the hotel was William Kinser, a somewhat shady charecter. In July 1914 he contacted an employment agency in Sioux City, IA to send him a cook/maid for the hotel. A young Sioux City woman named Francis Wilmott was sent by train. Soon after arriving, she was told by Kinser that the hotel wasn't profitable enough to pay her, and if she wanted any money she had to be a prostitute to the traveling salesmen. The deal was she kept the first six bucks, and after that the "house" got a buck per fuck. She wasn't having any of it and turned him in to the sheriff. Kinser was arrested on the 1910 federal Anti White Slave Act for transporting women across a state line for immoral purposes. He was convicted and did time in a federal pen.
A few years later the hotel was purchased by a Dr. Fyle, who turned it into a hospital. Apparently he was a very good surgeon and the hospital prospered. Fyle became very wealthy. He would often stay at the hotel overnight, in room No. 8. One December night in 1924 he disappeared on his way home from Sioux City, IA. He was not found until the following May by boys fishing in a small river. Fyle had missed a curve and drove into a deep pool. He never got out of his 1923 Ford convertible. The building became a hotel again, with a secret Prohibition Bar in the basement. It went through several owners and names, ending in 1964 as the Castle Hotel and owned by two women. The locals said it was a swinging place in the 1920s, mostly because of the bar. There were still traveling salesmen staying there in the late 1950s but that began to peter out as farms became more mechanized and there were fewer farmers to sell to, and ultimately the railroad stopped passenger service. The hotel has been abandoned since 1964. There were attempts to bring it back, as recently as 2002 by the state historical society, but what can you do with it? It's large, hard to heat, and there is no known commercial purpose for it. (Unless you possibly turn it back into a bed/breakfast/titty operation.) It's in rough shaped now, and much of the roof is no longer functional. I gingerly made my way up to the third floor and walked a little ways down a rotten hallway, but quickly turned back when my foot went through the floor. All the floors on the hotel are so dicey that I was afraid if I went through the third floor, my momentum would carry me through the second & first floors and into the basement. I will not go in there on a windy day.
The population in Geddes is about 200. In 1904 it was 1,200. I do plan on going back--better hurry before it falls in! I want to explore the basement a little, and take a photo of Frances Wilmott's room #11. I admire her courage!

It's a lucky time to venture out with a view camera. There's snow on the ground but we don't need heavy protection from the cold, as described in this discussion: Shooting in Winter (in New England) (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?135709-shooting-in-winter-(in-New-England)).

Jesse, I love everything about the image! The texture of the trees, and building, and the smoothness of the water. The reflection of the building in the water. The focus. The tinting.
Everything!
Perhaps because it evokes a very similar picture I took in London, not exactly this composition, but a lot of the same elements.

Thanks!
I use the divided approach when I'm out shooting a variety of films that I want to process together or when contrast is high. It's sort of a bullet proof way to keep highlights under control. In this case I processed six sheets of FP4 rated at 50 and a roll of PanF rated at 25 together. Since i don't shoot that much the added cost of doing 1:15 vs 1:100 isn't terrible.

Alan, mixed rolls to boot?! Wow. Are they films w/ similar concentration/time requirements? One size fits all? 1:15 for how long for Sol. A, Sol B? Presoak? That's huge.
'Been zeroing in on a time needed for Acros at 1:1:250 - which is what I use for most films. 1 hr w/ FP4 worked great this last wkend.

Hi Hiho,
Read Sandy King's recommendations, a quick search for divided pyrocat works. Basically start with 5 minutes in A and 5 in B and adjust to taste. I've run from 3 in each to 6 in each with different films and frankly don't see a lot of difference. I over expose by at least a stop vs the films' stated ISO's and go. This one I did for 5+5. The roll of PanF I processed with the FP4 sheets wasn't great because of lens flare (forgot my hood) and only allowing 2 instead of 3 stops for the deep red filter I used on some of them. But, yes, in the past I've mixed and matched PanF with FP4 with good results, ditto for Hp5 and Delta 3200 (rated at 800).
I will say though, the last few times I've used divided Pcat I've had some streaking on some but not all sheets. I do use a JOBO, and run the divided Pcat at 75F per Sandy's writings.
Now, keep in mind, I scan only and do not use traditional printing, as this development technique does result in low contrast negatives, but it does a great job of preserving the highlights for scanning.

Hi, Les, yes, the shadows of the wires - I finally decided the shadows were ok - now that you brought it up, I'm going to obsess about this again ! Somehow I don't mind the 2 darker shadows. It's the 2 faint shadows near roof level that bother me. This image is in photoshop, so I'll give it a try.

Don't bother. They add a nice touch of contemporaneousness (Germans like long words). Why should the adobe building look like it was photographed a century ago? It's 2017, the building is still here, and there is beauty in that. A little interaction with the surroundings doesn't hurt.

While I originally had misgivings about the obvious wire shadows, I decided to leave them.

I agree. I only went up as far as Two Harbors and it was my second time shooting in Duluth earlier in that day -- I couldn't be happier with the light, architecture and landscape. The feeling really changes when you get higher up in the world. After this I drove up to Hibbing to photograph the iron pit.

Wonderful. Could you please go over the details on how you measured the light for your exposure and how you developed the negative.

Wonderful. Could you please go over the details on how you measured the light for your exposure and how you developed the negative.
Thanks Kevin.
I'm not sure I'd recommend my "technique" (such as it is) to anyone, but since you asked...
I used my Pentax spot meter to measure what I thought was the darkest area (on the right side about 3/4 of the way down) and then I adjusted the exposure so that that area would fall on Zone II; very dark but with some texture. I can't remember the exact exposure but it was probably a couple of seconds at f32. The film was Tri-X, rated at 320. As far as developing goes, I've been taking my stuff to a local lab for a long time now. They're using D-76 or HC-110, I can't remember which, but in any case, development was "normal."
From there, I scan my negs in using an Epson 4990. I scan "flat" for the longest possible tonal range and then increase contrast and/or tweak levels from there. I treat each area separately. For example, in this case, I blocked off the window panes and made them the lowest contrast area of the image. Then I blocked off the doorway (excluding the window panes) and bumped up the highlights slightly. And so on. I usually do a fair amount of digital dodging and burning as well, such as here there was an unseen window at left that lightened the left edge of the picture. As I wanted the doorway and windows to be the main focus of light, I burned down the that left edge. The rectangle where the blackboard was attached is a tad higher contrast than the rest, because I wanted to show off those circular spots (glue?). You get the idea. It usually takes me 1-2 hours to get things the way I want, depending on the picture. In all, I try and keep any manipulations subtle enough that they don't draw attention to themselves. I don't want you thinking of the man behind the curtain! :-) Anyway, I hope some of that is useful. I realize that there are probably more straight-forward ways to arrive at the same point (development controls and so on) but over the years I've hacked my way through the brush in my own way and gotten to where I can get to where I want to go. Usually, ha.
Thanks again.

This is in the Metropolitan Theater in Manila, built in 1930. One of the greatest examples of art deco in the Philippines. It has fallen into disrepair and has been closed for the last maybe 20-30 years. It's now undergoing restoration and renovation. This image is of the lobby where there are 2 large sculptures, one of Adam and the other of Eve (she's holding an apple). I believe these sculptures came from France.165167

My first photo posted on LF! I have a Deardorff 8x10, using some "old" Tri-x 320, Schneider 240mm. I had an overcast day, but about the time I was ready to shoot the sun would come and go. Used a spot meter and shot f11 for 1/4 sec. Developed with D76, and took a photo of the neg over some LED lights then inverted in Photoshop. Comments and critiques welcome. Thanks Jim

Llanbadrig, on the north coast of Anglesey, means "Church of Saint Patrick" [with the Celtic padrig mutated by Welsh language rules to badrig]. It is said to have been founded in 440AD by St Patrick himself, and still has a viable congregation that attend regular services 1,577 years later.

I went back to my Ghost Town project and spent a couple of days at Bodie, WA, an old-time gold mining camp. This shot might have been a chapel or the company store. I need to do more web-surfing to get the story. TriX 4x5 with #8 Wratten filter and scanned from an Ilford print. I'll have more later, but first I have to motor to Seattle to get more paper and fixer.

Hello,
It seems that it is because you need to put your picture in your public "Photostream".
To be able to get to it, you have to create an album in wich you send the pictures you want to be public.
In this album, you click on the blue "Edit in Organizr" Then "Batch edit" & "Change Permissions" Check the right box and your pictures apear in your "Photostream".
Then you go to the right pointing arrow and so on.

Just amazing. I hope those structures stay around for a lot longer for people to enjoy.
How as shooting LF in that area? Did you have problems setting up tripods and stuff?
Oh yes. Tripods are forbidden in all of Sicily's antiquities sites and they're red hot about it. This was supported on a chair back, the chair being sat on by the very helpful but unfortunately-being-watched-by-his-boss attendant. He was most sympathetic, but wouldn't let me put the tripod up.
That's why I have no photos from the Valley of the Temples; they wouldn't even allow the tripod in the area.

Since when are tripods required for LF shots (perhaps for 8x10 or larger)?
Millions of shots have been done with 4x5 press cameras hand-held, including a lot by me.

Travelwide 4x5 would fix that.

Indeed the tripod is not necessary to get an image. It is, however, necessary *to me* to get the images that *I* want.
Your mileage may vary.

This is tremendous. Great contrasts and textures. Intriguing subject.
+1! Wow, nice one Peter! The tilted inner frame, the movement of the curtain, superb!

Peter,
Wonderful contrasts in
... light & dark
... motion & stillness
... texture
In addition, there's a mystery about it -
All of these elements combined evoke an emotional response
- as evidenced by the comments here.

I appreciate all of the comments. Thank you! I visited this house near Wausaw a number of times over the years. During that time the barn fell down and the curtain went away. I haven't been there in over 10 years. I wonder what it's like now?

This is IMO an outstanding photograph!
