It has been a pleasure to see all the great photography posted in this thread I started quite a while ago. Good work with a variety of subjects and equipment to compliment each shot.
Here is a shot I made just off Main Street here in Matthews. Two sisters lived on the site just beside the barn. Ask how old the barn was the reply was it was on the property when the arrived in 1927.
In the area around Charlotte, NC is growing so fast the old barns and more are fast disappearing, sorry to say. In fact more of the barns I have photographed are now gone. This one is still standing and here I hope it remains for many more years.
Made with Kodak 2D and Ilford HP400.

I had a 16x20 Ilfocrhome print with me at an early View Camera conference (I think the first one in Albuquerque), so that's the only thing possibility from me. I can't recall fully but I might of given an 11x16 print to the Ilford rep who was there (don't recall her name). There are a lot of tripod holes around the Tetons, some from Ansel Adams as you've probably seen LOL. Not sure if they are still open for business but there are cabins for rent a short walking distance from this and other Mormon Row barns. As with most NP there is a lot of photography traffic.

Have you been there since they started thee visitors center? They've cut down all the trees, scraped the mountain top bare, paved it and put the building on the rim next to the "sky walk". While it's under construction, the parking is about a quarter mile away, including handicapped spaces, and you have to go around a chain link fenced off area and through serious mud to get to it. The construction workers get to park next to the bridge. Karen and I decided this was our last visit there since it is now "modernized". On a brighter note, we ate lunch at one of our favorite places, the Kaffe Sol in Mt. Jewett, awesome food and outrageous baked goods.

Last I was there was in October 2014... there was construction starting. It did not look good. Hope it's not as bad as it seems. When were you there last?

I still want to get a 4x4 and drive to the OTHER side of the bridge, it could be cool -- the tracks are all twisted and snake into the valley.

Karen and I were there 10/29, and the place is a wreck. We want to get to the far side as well, I have a 4x4 F-250 Super Duty and maps. If my knees could take it, we would just hike down to the bottom and up the far side, there's a good trail.

A manual photoshop merge of two 4x5 negatives from the Liddell-Ford Homestead in Basking Ridge, NJ. I will be printing the negatives in my darkroom, and make the equivalent panoramic by mounting the two prints side-by-side. HP5+, Pyrocat-HD, 210 Symmar-S:

Two more negative scans from the Liddell-Ford Homestead, still HP5+ developed in Pyrocat-HD.

The outbuildings made an interesting pattern of triangular shapes:

And windows are always tempting. What surprised me when I developed the negative was that things aren't quite square, even though I squared up the camera. While the horizontal lines (clapboard, window top and bottom) are horizontal, the sides of the window are not vertical. I assume that is due to the age of the structure, unless there is something I did wrong with camera set-up/perspective:

While getting ready for Santa, I ran across a box of 11x14 prints that I never mounted. Here is a tea-toned print from a 4x5 negative I printed some time back - at least a year or two - while experimenting with tea toning:

https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5682/23777050255_767dcbbef6_z.jpg

I shot this from the right so that the "Bodie Hotel" sign in the window was visible. The size limitation of the scanner cut off the wight hand side of the building and the old power pole which is a tree knobby from where numerous branches were cut-off. I have since determined that the best composition would be straight on from the general store directly across Main street. The tea obscures the beautiful tone of the wood visible in the un-toned version which I obtained by tweaking the filtration in the color head.

Forgot to mention that this is a B&W print from a Fuji Acros negative. I didn't record the lens and taking details but I believe that it was taken with a 90mm f4.5 Grandagon and enlarged with a 150mm Nikkor on Fuji Oriental RC. Toned with inexpensive black tea. The sign in the window reads: Bodie Hotel. Meals at all hours.

Just came across this 8 x 10 photo in going through some old family photo boxes. My grandfather was a professional photographer in Minnesota and had a professional portrait studio back in the 30's and 40's. I came across this photo of Mount Rushmore that I'm pretty sure was taken by him on a family vacation/outing.

It is clearly taken just about the time the mountain was finished so that would have been 1940 - 41. All four presidents are done, but there is still scaffolding on top of Roosevelt and if you look closely, you can see a couple of cables that are still in place.

What makes this interesting (at least to me) is that the photo is hand colored most likely colored by my grandmother who I understand helped my grandfather with coloring the photos he took. It would be really cool if I also had the original negative of this, but we couldn't find it anywhere.

I'm almost embarrassed to post these; the lighting is so flat and overcast and generally feeble that they are perhaps quite the worst pictures I have taken... nonetheless, it turns out that if you visit Lacock Abbey with a vintage 5x4 over your shoulder you get an amazing amount of respect (as well as an amazing amount of questions, and your photo taken many times).

Best questions were from a kid of twelve or thirteen who'd been given an electric camera for Christmas and after requesting the full spiel - open lens, iris up, compose picture upside down, measure light, close lens, set exposure, set iris, insert film carrier, remove dark slide, click, etc - asked how it did videos!

These are all taken with a 1940s Micro Precision Press, with the original uncoated Xenar lens, using out-of-date (and no longer available) Adox CHS 50 developed 7 minutes in RO9 one-shot at 50-1. I suspect the temperature wasn't as well controlled as it might have been; they look a little under developed, to add to their general nastiness.

Enjoy (or not)...

Thanks, Ken.

I think you may be right. Fred lived about 40 miles south of the old house.

I was originally introduced to the spot in 1969 or 70 by an experienced photographer, Paul Matthews, who helped me as I was learning to use a view camera. Fred and Paul were friendly, though Paul, an older and curmudgeonly character, was rather competitive with Fred. No doubt, one of them learned about it from the other - not sure who was there first.

I also grew to know Fred very well (after Paul died). I would often call or visit Fred, especially when I needed help or advice. I vaguely recall him showing me photos he had taken at the old house. That was in the days when Fred was beginning his Zone VI venture. In fact, Fred had just purchased a Macbeth densitometer to do readings for students and his Zone VI customers. He offered to sell me his Weston densitometer ($25*) which I still own and treasure ! Remarkably, at 70 years, it's in great shape and still gives very accurate B&W readings.

* Fred was a decent guy - he rarely gave anything away, except one thing - he was most generous in giving advice and imparting his knowledge (if you were on his right side ! ) He also helped the many people who subscribed to his newsletter and purchased Zone VI Products.

I never had the opportunity to participate in one of Fred's workshops. I'm sure you had some interesting experiences when you did so.

Route 22 was a great place for photography - although Fred mentions in the book that the house was replaced by a diner shortly after his photo was made.

Fred also mentions that he used the same lens, a 90mm Super Angulon.

That's it, Ken.

Now, I'm tempted to go back thru my negatives and see what other images I have from that house.
I may have one from the same room.

The house was demolished in the 70's. Route 22 was reconfigured (somewhat) to make it a safer road, but is still mostly a two lane highway. A few sections of the "old Route 22" remain, by-passed by the newer road.

I had forgotten about Fred's book, "The Fine Print". I should pick up a copy, I'm sure there are other images I'll recognize.

Dennis

Building was the jail and sheriffs office, then converted to a hotel, front added, sides expanded, extra floor built in, then was being re-re-modeled into a historical office space. I had access and shot inside mostly with 4X5. This is 5X7, TX and HC110. Negative was tossed out of file and a much better one kept. This one runs up on the shoulder. Saw it laying there the other day and picked it up to run a print. (Currently catching up on proofing) Ilford Warmtone MG Fiber in Dektol with a little pre-flash. Thanks Thomas, that brought back a lot of memories: I was in Bodie in September 2001, a couple of days after the attacks. As a result of the air traffic ban, the sky was completely free of contrails and the weather was sunny, dry, and not very warm, but the light was *fantastic*.

Yeah that's the one. He says its ISO 2 or so..which I believe, but I ended up ISO 0.5 with it increasing a bit each time I reheat to coat a new set of plates.

Robert Brazile
28-Feb-2016, 05:22
The increase in speed is perhaps nice, but I was taught that it degrades every time you reheat it, so ideally you should scoop out only what you need for a session and heat only that. FWIW.

Robert Brazile

Nodda Duma
28-Feb-2016, 06:16
Yep, the gelatin can break down with multiple reheating. You also run the risk of the emulsion getting so sensitive that it fogs up.

So far so good for me however. My batch went into three separate containers..each is heated about three times total before the container is empty and I haven't seen any issue except the speed is maybe ISO 1-2 by the third reheat.

Thank you for the interest. It is fun to share the process.

I found these two great barns when I was out barn hunting one Sunday. I either had some flare (and I think the sun was in that direction) or a bit of a light leak on the right. I still liked the image, though.

I am so happy I signed on here, I get to view so many wonderful images. Photography is like meditation for me. Both doing and seeing.

Here are some of mine, taken over 15 years ago. I used to have a darkroom, but upon my first showing back about 2003, I realized that it would take forever for me to print my show, so I flipped the switch to digital. I scan into an Epson 2400, do dodging, burning, and other normal manipulations that you would find in a traditional darkroom, to get everything I can get out of the negative's dynamic range.

1) Paddington Station, London. I could not get the Wisner to tilt enough to get everything perfectly vertical, but I'm still happy with this, with one exception. I wanted a train in the picture, and it just left the track nearest to the viewer.
149240

2) Saw Mill, VT. This sawmill was out of the way nestled in the woods at the entrance to a waterfall. I immediately knew I had to capture it. I was surprised that I got as much shadow detail as I did, and was ecstatic that it printed so well. There IS some digital manipulation here in that I had to define the wires at the top better than the scan showed.

Linhof Technikardan S45, Nikkor W210, Fujifilm Velvia 50
2 seconds f/22, no movements

"scanned" on lightbox with D800E and 60f/2.8 AF-S micro, four shots stitched in CS6. Only problem I've found with this method so far is keeping film flat; stitching caused a small problem, with only solution a bit of perspective distortion in CS6. Would be interested to know if/and in what ways a flatbed such as an Epson V850 would produce better output.

A 4000px version is in my 5x4 flickr album.

Thanks!

More of my brother's post&beam barn construction.. Pre-anniversary speed graphic, 7.25" verito, fp4+ in pyrocat hdc. Old is measured in days here.

For the first photo, I saw the staging up above and thought of Whistler's "Nocturn and Blue and Gold" which was probably copied in composition by the pictorialists or at least he and the pictorialists were similarly Japanese inspired. But windows inside of windows is pretty solid in modernist photo language.

Here's another visit to Ebey's Ferry House, ca. 1855, to view the two-seater and it's surroundings. In some kind of architectural gaff the door to "Ebey's Rest" opens towards the neighboring shed, instead of out to the Puget Sound and the Olympics. No design award for Jacob Ebey! This was with 150 mm lens, TriX film, polarizer and red #25 filters in mid-afternoon. The polarizer effect was less than hoped - perhaps later into the summer would work better for this strategy.

I'd like to ID this for a better title, if possible. I know we have several old Sierra hands here. Wondering if anyone recognizes this building (somewhere in the vicinity of Hornitos, Big Oak Flat, etc.). Sadly, I've lost or misplaced some of my detailed location notes over the decades. I'm able to ID a surprising number of exteriors & landscapes searching Google Images, Street View, etc. Doesn't help for interiors...

Building was open at the time. I don't recall having to get any permissions.

From what I've been told, the Fire Department held dances on the 2nd floor above the General Store to raise enough money to purchase the 1939.

They have a 1919 model as well, but the guys couldn't get it started to drive it out of the station. My camera would have been about 25 yrs old when they bought that one.

If by having taken it too far you mean burning the highlights, then I'd disagree. I really like it exactly because of this!

The 'Old City' (Gamla Linköping) is located between the downtown and the University, this picture is taken from one of the café's in there.

It made me ask - why is it that the metal parts show the visible deterioration while the rubber hose looks like a new one? Must be the Swedish good air!

Maybe the pump has a newer hose. It looks like the fuel price is 16.8 Kronor which could be a recent price.

Today's diesel price is around 12-13 swedish krowns per liter that's around 1 dollar 50 cent, maybe the counter was broken long time ago, but still confused about the hose it's much newer than rest of pump :)

Things to check include: could be as simple as a lighter background making it appear darker, e.g. if you are using the default forum skin. Less likely, but could be that you are viewing this with a web browser that isn't color-profile aware. But I think all the major browsers are nowadays. Or if you're currently viewing on a different device, could be your main monitor is too bright.

I'm pretty sure it's just the brightness up a bit too much on my monitor. I just changed to Lightroom from CaptureOne Pro and did a direct upload to SmugMug so hopefully nothing there.

Darkrat, I love the subject matter, light and textures. For me it's a bit too tight on the Chesterfield, though... I think a horizontal view may be better, and pulling back a bit. Of course I have no idea what is to the left and right of the Chesterfield. Just my thoughts.
