Thank you Dan.
As for the Master Technika and a 47mm lens: actually I have modified my Master and installed an additional interior focus rail (which was sold by a Chinese manufacturer on the auction side). Operation is now similar to a Master Technika 2000, and this is a big bonus when working with short lenses (65mm, 47mm).

Hey, it's not my photo, it belongs to johnmsanderson, but it is a glorious structure. It was,at one time, a technological marvel, longest and highest span in the world(or some such thing). The state has turned it into a park and fixed up a walkway along with a glass floor to view straight down, very awesome place. The park hosts a "Bigfoot" festival every year, except this, construction of a visitor center blocking everything.

I noticed the construction when I was there. I was also there back in April this year before they began the construction. I hope the new visit center doesn't overwhelm the place. It felt very serene as is.

If you don't recognize what it is your not alone. I however believe that it's an old Manure Spreader.

I don't know why, but I have named it the Politician!

Yep, its a manure spreader. I believe that I can see the chains on the bed which drag the, ah, "fertiizer" back to the blades which fling it out the back. If the gear-and-chain drive mechanism is still there (power came from the animals or tractor pulling the thing, via cleated ground wheels) you may find some interesting shapes to photograph.

Here's a shot of an old stone smokehouse at Round Valley Regional Park near Clayton, California, from last Friday. This was taken on Harman Direct Positive Paper at ISO 12 and developed in Caffenol-C-H for 15 minutes in a tank with constant rotation. I used a Cambo SCN and Schneider Kreuznach 210mm f5.6.

Thank you Harold, and Marty,
I am hoping I can return there over the Christmas holidays, however it is in high country and could be buried under several feet of snow by then.

I honestly didn't even know if the camera I was using was any good. I had just bought and was half expecting light leaks.
I am certainly happy there aren't any.

It's close to a historic mining town in British Columbia, Canada.
Almost underneath it there happens to also be a pretty impressive waterfall I'll have to post another day.
On my side the cliffs are even more nasty, so I don't do as much exploring around the area as I would like to.

I'm around 80 years too young to have seen it used in person, so I can only assume that people crossed it. The mining started in the area around 1898.

I understand that there are still some sections of highway which are cantilevered over cliffs in British Columbia. Since I drive big trucks for a living I don't really care to know which ones.
The second post at this link mentions one.

A bit of front rise reduced the converging verticals, but not entirely. Hopefully we feel that we're looking up.

The building leans over a bit and that effect was maintained for the same reason.

One of the charms of the view camera is that we can make an entirely faithful rendering when required or we can apply aesthetic effects according to taste.

In some ways this whole thread is about what the Japanese long ago named Wabi and Sabi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi).

The greeks built the parthenon with a little perspective distortion too, perhaps to enhance the feeling of looking up.

I like the dark sky and hard shadows... The vent/door sort of mocks the midcentury-modern architecture of tall thin windows too, like people would commonly have beside a door.

4x5 fp4+/pyrocat hd/9" Gundlach Hyperion lens. This is a "cable area" sign or was at one time. It went to a tower on nearby Monroe Island that was part of a system of four towers for ships in Penobscot bay to do a measured mile. It had many official military uses, particularly in WWII, but it actually goes back much further. This was always a ship building area, so such speed testing was common and useful.

Used Lee circular linear polarizer and compensated 2 stops but snow did not come out the way I wanted it??
Was at 90 degrees from sun but I believe I was overexposed 1 stop.

Any advice welcomed???

Overexposure could certainly be the problem - are you sure there isn't any detail in the snow?

Also, the visual quality of snow depends on a lot of reflections - which of course a polarizer is designed to eliminate. So use an orange filter for a darker sky instead of a polarizer, when snow is part of the shot.

I'd bet the detail is there and it's not scanning well.

I just use an incident light meter and snow comes out fine. You can get some extra detail in the highlights by using a pyro developer such as PMK or pyrocat hd.

Honestly, I really like the second one, I like the way the light so to focuses on the barn and highlights its intensity well diminishing the lesser interesting windmill area, so your eye is really drawn to that barn, I think it works for that image, I don't really like the first image much, I don't find it interesting. So I think the second image really works even with the polarized effect causing darkening toward the edge.

Thanks for the tips. I agree with all of you.

-The snow was wind blown so no fluffy white tips were present. There was a bit of ice fog so maybe polarizer was not at its full potential. I have an orange filter so will try it out next sunny day and compare but usually find an exaggerated amount of contrast in my pics. I should adjust my developing next time I use an orange filter.

-I have some pyro and find its great for old machinery and will also try out next time. I made a print in dektol this evening of the first image and the image is much nice than the scan.

-The second image is also my favorite but windmills are very rare here so i took a pic before somebody tears it down. The barn is very nice and I have been trying to take pictures of buildings with lots of dead sky recently.I find it very challenging because there is very little room for processing mistakes. The barn does take away from the lack of detail in the snow so its not that bad I guess. You know when you have an image in your head and develop the pic and things come out differently, that drives me nuts.

Another option is to go out just after sundown while it's still light. Lower contrast but still some nice tones possible. I do like the second photo.

If the sparkles is what he's missing then I agree with this 100 percent. I'll add, if I wanted to catch snow sparkles I exposed at Zone V or VI which seems incorrect but don't forget the light meter is averaging the snow and the sparkles are usually many Zones brighter. Of course, if there are other important details in the scene that are darker than the snow then this method may not work for the overall image.

The traditional advice for getting snow texture is to use a light- or medium-yellow filter, because the shadows are illuminated by skylight, which is more blue than direct sunlight. The polarizer darkens the sky, but can actually decrease the snow texture by suppressing some of the tiny specular reflections.

Note that I said it was traditional advice, not that is was necessarily correct; my personal experience with snow pictures was mostly at night. :)

A yellow or orange (or maybe red) filter certainly makes sense especially if the snow is strongly side-lit. I hadn't thought of that.

Just after rain cleared I set up to shoot this scene near my home. Polarized to take shine off. Very difficult to decide where to start and stop this negative. (shot a horizontal as well.) There is a pretty wonderful chalk bowl and brick pillar to the left. (in fact, I will add it.) Wonderful scene.

Camera may not look high but was up about seven feet. Standing on 14-inch case. Just like the '60s...it's hard to get too high.

Several folks stopped to watch including two Mormon missionary girls who actually climbed up on my camera case to look through the Deardorff.

Iphone file of proof from glass sheet over the fixer tray. Going to take some very careful printing and spotting. There are lots of lines of white caulk in the brickwork. It must leak.

128988
Stairway, Chilton and Dobbs, Tyler, Texas.

Horizontal version.

128989

Prefogging in printing ought to pull the white bannister down. Looks like fairly well-behaved negative, just don't want it too dark or two contrasty. But not too flat either.

Thought about a yellow or orange filter to brighten up the red brickwork but decided to leave it where it was. Polarizer was enough to keep wet ivy leaves from getting too specular.

Found a nice old Ford pickup behind a house here on Whidbey Island. There was an older house in the distance so I came back with a 360 mm lens for the 4x5, TriX 310 and Red #25 filter. The sun only peeked thru for a moment, so I was winging it on the exposure. It's a little harsh even with reduced development and I may ask for permission to try again on a sunnier day.

Photo taken with a Toyo 810G using Ilford Delta 100 b&w film.

The lighting was fairly flat at the time, partly overcast sky and -6C. Still a little chilly to be handling metal with bare hands for very long.

The film was tray developed in HC-110 dilution 'B' for 7 mins, 15 seconds at 17.5 C.

Not happy with the resulting scan - not sure if the problem is purely a developing or scanning issue. I do see some developing issues but for the life of me, I can't get a good scan (Epson V700).

First time Ive used 8x10 film in this camera, and first time I believe that I have used Delta 100.

I just finished drying this negative and scanning it in. This is the old sugar plant in my home town. There are these sugar plants stretching along the front range. Most are now abandoned as they beets are processed somewhere else. This old plant is still going though. I'll need to get a shot of the actual buildings soon.

I used some front tilt to focus on just the train cars and buildings.

Taken with a Zone VI 4x5 and Kodak Ektar 203mm F7.7 lens. Shot on Foma 200 film rated at 120 and developed in Pyrocat MC for 8.5 minutes.

I retired in 1999 and moved into a smaller house in 2008. Since my move I have been shooting old barns and farms, abadnon buildings, old depots, almost anything old, with vintage equipment. I have an 8x10 Deardoff about my age, born 1935, and my new camera is a Super Speed Graflex. Most lens are Ektar, with a few Wollensak in the mix. Film is Ilford Delta 100.

Here is a shot that started the barn and farms collection. This barn is what remains of a dariry farm, my development can be seen in the background.

Shot with my Deardoff and a 10 inch Ektar.

John, Thanks. The backlight is from an open barn door to the right rear. Those highlights on the machinery edges are what brought me to the composition. I had trouble with flare and maneuvered the camera to minimize it. Yes thank you.
The last pic was taken at f22.8 for 8 seconds (lightmetered) with a nikon 90mm sw f8 with Acros 100. Tray developed in Pyrocat HD 1:1:100 for 9:30 minutes at 68F.
When i agitate i physically remove the neg 'emultion side up' from the dev a re-immerse it in the dev emultion side up. I pic it up from its edges.
The first 30 seconds i agitate 6-7 times then agitate 3 times at the begining of every other minute.

These pics are straight form a scan with no editing
Moving the tray from side to side gives me uneven dev and flat negs. I dont know what i'm doing wrong so gave up on that method.

1918 Model T fire truck detail at Owls Head Transportation Museum. Just a simple scan. I think it'd made a nice toned cyanotype next.

9" Gundlach Hyperion, 4x5 pre-anniversary speed graphic, fp4+ film in pyrocat hd. The new question people ask (instead of can you get film for that?) is which is older the car or the camera? (answer depends on the car/plane I'm shooting, but it interests people a great deal)

Thank you, guys. I've been looking at that wall with the door for several years, thinking how to best capture it. There are only a few minutes in the morning and late afternoon, when the sun just peeks over the wall's edge to emphasize the roughness. And that was the right time to capture the shot.

Thank you Roger and Jim. I was at a motorcycle show with my girls (10 and 5) and while they really enjoyed the chrome and bright colors and custom paint jobs and gas smells, they really connected with the bicycle when I stopped for a few minutes to photograph it. Probably because they actually use bicycles. It worked out good for all of us to spend a few minutes there. The owner even let me move the bike for another arrangement and I owe him a favor-print when I get those developed.
