We had a huge snowstorm roll through Missouri yesterday so I jumped in the truck and drove a couple hours to an area that I knew would have some great subjects for the snow. Found this bright red barn in a open field and captured this during full white-out conditions, used a huge golf umbrella to shield me while setting up the view camera. Was also lucky enough to remember that I had left some sheet holders with Velvia in the truck so I was able to make a second exposure with color to show the bright red paint against the all white surroundings.

This is really wonderful! Love everything about it, but the tree on the left is something special.
Yes, that's really nice Mark! Interested to see the Velvia as well!

We had a huge snowstorm roll through Missouri yesterday ...
Wonderful mood.
Much appreciated John, Bryan, and Jim!
Jim the tree was definitely the final touch and anchor point of the composition, after I finished with the view camera I ran up to the tree and shot some isolated photos with my Nikon F.
One more from yesterday, this is the old homestead near the barn posted above.

Wow, Peter. The framing is just perfect on that and the level of detail across all those textures is amazing.

Peter,
I also echo the praise above for your super image of the Purina Chow building. However, I also found myself laughing at the thought of how many of my fellow Americans would be shocked to learn that the food they once gave their pampered pets came from such an old, non-modern building.

Thanks for all the nice comments on my Purina Chow shot!
John, nice work on yours too. Those corrugated buildings have some great textures as well as highlights and shadows to work with. I wasn't trying to emulate anyone else, but subconscious influences perhaps since corrugated buildings are often the subject of B&W photographs.
Thanks again everyone.

Okay please tell me this image is from a scanned negative that had some "HDR" treatment or something. This is a great image, if this represents a 'straight' print, I think I want to give up now!
Thanks Peter. I was lucky and would have to credit some dramatic skies for getting a couple of good images that day.

This negative is one of those that looked good coming out of the soup. The sun was being blocked at intervals and I got it at a point where it was slightly filtered, not direct. There's no HDR applied, but a fair amount of localized dodging and burning was used, like darkening the bottoms of the clouds, ala Jim kitchen the king of clouds, and maybe some contrast added to the bldg.. This negative is an easy printer, though, thanks to the soft but still directional light.
Like you, I look at a lot of the imagery here and feel humbled for the most part. This one is a case of the blind dog finding the bone I must say, there were a lot screwball mistakes on many of the negatives on that trip.

Here is something really old embellished a bit by something new. A New England stone wall from about 1720 in a wet meadow that supports young winterberries. I was struck by the contrast. The stone wall age is roughly dated from town records of the farm.

Here are some terms I came across which describe key elements in the classical Japanese approach to design.
While many photos in this collection of "old things" have some of these qualities, that photo seems to have them all, and a few more not on the list.
Kanso - Simplicity
Shizen - Naturalness
Yugen - Mystery
Seijaku - Silence
Sabi - Antiquity

Attended Tillman Crane's "Photographer's Retreat" at Peter's Valley Craft Center in the Delaware Water Gap this past weekend. The first day we visited the Zimmerman Estate, a disused farm now owned by N.J. Following are the first three of the images I've scanned. All are Epson scans of 4x5 Ilford HP5+ negatives, PMK developer:
Barn interior, straight scan with no processing, 4 seconds metered, 10 seconds guessed at for reciprocity (didn't have my table handy):

And lastly, interior of a different shed, apparently used as a workshop; again no processing other than some lightening of shadow areas:

A bit of a cheat really as it was taken inside a local museum. I wanted 15 mins at f22 on a 75mm SA, but the light cycled every 10mins between daylight and night time when the street lights came on, and candles lit up in the windows, so it got the full daylight cycle and about 20 secs when the lights started comong on.

Mmelvis, ok computer: thanks for your comments! My real decisions will come in the darkroom, since I still think of myself as a "wet" printer, and my photoshop skills are quite rudimentary. That's why I indicated the minimal processing when I posted the shots. On the first two, I will have to make some decisions about contrast; the third will undoubtedly need more work because of the dynamic range.

I like the subtle sense of connection between the objects, the lovely qualities of light and textures - and the sense of mystery concerning the place and its purpose. It's not merely a record of a remarkable item, it's a study of subtle overtones and interactions - and it has a distinct feeling.
Would it be correct to guess that the lens was somewhere around 150mm ?

Would it be correct to guess that the lens was somewhere around 150mm ?
Ken: First, thank you so much for your comments. Like many here, I enjoy and respect the work that you post immensely, aside from the fact that the food containers I use as trays to develop my film are a direct result of the recommendations on your website! And perhaps one day (after all, I've only been using a view camera for 40 years or so :)) I will be able to pick out lenses from images as astutely as you did: Rodenstock Apo-Sironar-S 5.6/150!
My attempts at humor and ego-inflation aside, I found it interesting that while I carry three lenses in my pack (210, 150, 80), of the 20 sheets I exposed over the two days I was at Peter's Valley, I think 19 were taken with the 150. I used the 210 for one close-up, and never used the 80.

The idea of using plastic containers comes from Carl Weese.
I estimated 150mm (on 4x5) from angle of view: how much we look not only forward, but also to the side, up and down.

This photo is from my hometown, Mooresville, NC. It is the old boiler room building at Mooresville Mills, now closed. When I was small a very large smokestack stood along side this building. I remember asking how the round smokestack could be use to build using normal strait brick.
Sad to see all the textile plants closed in this area. Textiles were very important to me since I spent my life selling textile machinery.

I'm going to post this here, rather than resurrect my old thread...
This is a fresh re-scan of probably my favorite image from inside the old mill that I'm documenting (should be doing a show about it next year). I actually never shared this specific image though because I had to wait several months to get it developed. I think I'm going to print it up 52x40, and mat it to 60x48, as the centerpiece of the show. Not sure how I'm going to mat it though...
Anyway, any comments appreciated. I think it works better in the context of the entire show, but whatever. Taken with a 90mm f/8 Nikkor on Ektachrome VS with completely guessed reciprocity correction...I think this was a 12 minute exposure at f/32 IIRC. The scan from my Cezanne is mind-blowing compared to what I had from the old Microtek M1 (film flatness issues on the M1...).

Thanks Jonathan. There was something special about that room, with early-morning light streaming through 100-year-old glass...warm, diffuse, and inviting. but a stark contrast with the surroundings. The new scan really helped though - with my old scanner there was a persistent dull blue cast that I just couldn't get rid of without messing up the delicate tonality (plus the shadows blocked up due to poor DMax, unlike here). I can't wait to see it printed large.

I think Jonathan summed it up pretty well. Really a lot for the eye to see, yet so simple. It's incredible.

A recent local news article on historic sites suffering from the combination of Hurricane Sandy and a lack of restoration funding alerted me to the McAlpin Mansion property in nearby Harding Township, NJ. Despite having lived nearby for 30 years, I had never been aware of it. Of course an aging, largely white-colored building is just what someone shooting large format B&W looks for! The following are all negative scans from HP5+, developed in PMK.
The mansion, exterior view:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3698/8841595984_c0d27a59a1_c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterlewin/8841595984/)

img106 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterlewin/8841635438/) by Pete Lewin (http://www.flickr.com/people/peterlewin/), on Flickr
And two views of the Conservatory interior. The first is from a 4x5 negative, and contains a bunch of reflection artifacts, since I had to shoot at an angle through a plexiglass door.

img105 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterlewin/8841728186/) by Pete Lewin (http://www.flickr.com/people/peterlewin/), on Flickr
And a straight-on view of the Conservatory interior. This is a medium format (I know, but bear with me...) shot, where I could hand-hold with the lens shade right up against the door, eliminating reflections:

I've got hundreds of photos from this mill - it's currently being dismantled and will likely become an apartment complex :( - and will be having a gallery show with my photographic partner in this endeavor next year. We are documenting the mill, it's deconstruction, and have plans to also do portraits of people who worked there.
These 900px images don't do the texture and feel of the place justice. At least one of these will be printed 20x24 in my darkroom I think.

Corran,
I like the second one best because of the great perspective, followed by nr. 3.
Will do. Still don't have a hard date, but likely late summer / early autumn 2014.
I agree with you mono, the second image is my favorite. Just the tiniest bit of misalignment with such a wide-angle and the perspective is no good - and it was so dark I couldn't see the ground glass. It was slightly cocked to the left so I must be honest and say I fixed it in PS. Will do the same adjustment with my easel in the DR.

JeRuFo, I have to say I love the windmill, especially the motion in the water and clouds. I almost wish the blades were moving a little! Do they still go or are they fixed in place?
Here's an ancient "Applications" sign outside the main office of the cotton mill I've been shooting. I have no idea how old it is - the mill closed in 1979 so it's at least 35 years old but probably 50+:
http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/0817ss.jpg
Thank you, Bryan. The mill is still fully functional. There is a group of volunteers that run it now. They still peel barley with it (hence the name Pelmolen, pel=peel and molen=mill) and make a few different kind of oils. It's open for visits daily. But the wind was pretty strong and gusty on the day I was there, so they probably didn't run that day (plus it was near sunset, past 9pm).
I don't think people will be using that sign anytime soon. Clearly from another time when unemployment wasn't really an issue.
Jewan
Neat! That would be a super cool place to visit.
You're right about the sign. I hadn't thought of it like that. Sadly it will be just another twisted piece of trash in a landfill soon, as this mill is being torn down as I type.
Here's a shot from inside after a lot of rain:
http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/0818ss.jpg
A lot of mills in Holland are 'rescued' by volunteers and are now open for visitors. A lot of them were neglected for a while when they went out of fashion, but a lot of them have been restored and a lot of them are still up and running.
That interior shot is fantastic, great tones.

Jonathan
Thanks Jonathan! The funny thing is we had been trudging around in the stifling heat for over an hour and they had been using a cutting torch in this room, making it steamy and yuck, and I just did not want to take any pictures. I saw this shot but almost didn't take it, but my friend/collaborator convinced me to go ahead and do it since she was going to wander and shoot something close by. Glad a did! Also funny is that I didn't even meter or compose the shot, I just made an educated guess - in this instance all I could see on the GG was two bright spots where the doors are (90mm f/8 is already pretty dim!). My metering technique was "5 minutes should be enough and I'll pull the development a little" and then I walked away, haha.
Here's another scene (sorry to flood the thread?). I've been wanting to shoot this wall since we started last year but there was never any light. Well, now that half of the roof is gone...there is some light! This was a 2-minute exposure on Provia 100F:
http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/0839ss.jpg
Oh, and I need to send you your negative back! Been so busy with shooting weddings and trying to get in the mill before it's gone that I totally forgot until I opened up my scanner last night to scan these and found your negative still sitting there!

Bryan,
No rush on the negative. Whether it's stored at your place or mine, in storage is where it will sit for years to come regardless.
I like the shot of the wall. I'd be curious to see what it looks like as an abstract if you cropped in just to the blue part of the wall itself without the ceiling or floor. You're getting a lot of good images out of the mill. I'm sure your show will be fantastic when it happens.
J.
Good thought (though the light fixture kind of encroaches), I'll try that out.
jcoldslabs
21-Jun-2013, 18:01
I saw that, but I'd leave the light fixture in for such a crop. That and the broom handle (?) at lower right would add to the overall abstractness, I think. (But, hey, don't listen to me. It's your image.)

Here is the Sussex County Courthouse which I took this weekend. Although I am generally ok with the image I am wondering what else I could have done to get the perspective better. I mean the upper corner of the building closest to the camera seems to protrude a little too much to me.
I leveled the camera, used quite a bit of back fall, and the lens was a 90mm F6.8 Caltar II. Moving back was not an option as there is a big tree blocking the shot.
What do you guys do to get this better?

I decided after 12 years of transparency and B&W film that it was time to try some color negative film. This is my first sheet.
An old F250 in west Texas on 4x5 Portra 160. RAW scan as positive film, then converted with Color Perfect using the Portra 160 profile. Only a slight curve applied in Photoshop. The conversion filter is dang good. I had never scanned color negative film before. I think I'm going to love this stuff.

Thanks Mark! The hazy highlights were from smoke hanging around the building from arc welding. It was barely visible in person but obviously permeated the building enough to show up a bit.

Here you go. It's a filter plug-in for Photoshop. He offers lifetime updates, so it's a good deal. I originally bought it in 2004 when it was called ColorNeg and never really used it. It was nice to get the latest with all the recent film profiles when I needed it. Just read the readme.txt that comes with the zip file. It explains how to use it.

Exactly... I didn't do a true split tone with the highlights one color and the shadows the other, instead I did two layers one with a warm tone and the other a cool tone and masked whatever tone I wanted in the final photo. It was a total last minute thing that I just went with lol
Well it works, IMO. Looks almost like a color image with a desaturated sky.

Dominik
Thanks, It's a good question.
I'm trying to learn how to maximize my abilities with the verito by getting out and using it for a variety of subjects that aren't traditionally soft focus. Someday I'll have it figured out what I can use a verito for and what I can't. Most people err on the side of caution and stick to the tried and true subjects of soft focus past.
The Verito seems like a nice lens to use in bright sun if you can get fast enough shutter speed. It's got both a fat depth of field and a smooth out of focus background. If I stopped down a normal lens sufficiently it might bring the background into more focus, which would not be desirable either.

Two different films, two different interpretations.
These were taken back-to-back, first with T-Max 400 and second with T-Max 100. Both were developed in Pyrocat-HD 1:1:100 for an appropriate time, and both look to have similar density ranges by eye.
I think I like the dramatic look of the T-Max 100 (I will admit that I emphasized it a little with some burning/dodging).
Both taken with a 47mm XL lens w/ 3B center filter on 4x5, then cropped to 12x20 dimensions:

http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/stricklandmill-1121s.jpg
Bryan, nice image. The little bit of warmth added to the second image is nice. I find that with everything else being equal, a little bit of warmth adds a bit of glow to the image. The difference in contrast is quite dramatic, too. Did the sun come out more strongly during the TMax 100 shot?
Vaughn
Thanks Vaughn. I was working quickly to pull off this image before the sun dipped below the trees, but IIRC the sun was essentially the same between the two. There was only about 30 seconds in between, and if anything I thought the light was a bit more hazy/diffuse on the second shot.
Thanks -- then the great increase in contrast and the greater shadow strength in the lower image must be due to the printing (and/or neg development).
It is tricky to get the timing right, but I have made some nicely lit images with the sun behind thin clouds -- strong enough to still throw distinct shadows, but not as much contrast. Thought that might have been the case here.
Not a great reproduction (taken with glass in the frame), but this was taken with that partial sun (on TMax100).
Yes I know just the light you are talking about. I see it often in the spring and summer here with fluffy clouds moving quickly. The light will bounce around so fast it's very hard to meter! I think it basically is a combination of not enough exposure for the shadows and a long development. I used an EI of 50 but maybe I'll try 32. Just wanted to try TMX in Pyrocat (usually I use Rodinal).

Thank you, Jim. You're right about it not being a F250. I went and looked at a B&W shot I did of the whole truck (attached) and sure enough it has GMC on the wheel hubs. There is a "250" on the grill that I mistook for a F250. Good call and I'm glad you corrected me.

I'd have just used a bit of front-rise. You sure you only used back-fall and both standards were parallel to the façade? Tilting anything in architecture is asking for trouble; pretty pronounced skew on the right. Wide-angles are tricky that close though in any case. Nice exposure. (Drawing gridlines ( e.g. with pencil) on the GG can also help getting lines straight :))

Hello Robert,
Very nice shot. I would love to see a real print of this negative, like an albumen print or carbon print.
A question: would it be good to crop the topside a little just to get rid of the horizontal pipe at the top, or not at all?

Thanks! Actually, yes it would be better to crop it off. As it was unbearably hot when I took it (99F) then having to be under the dark focusing cloth made it worse, I was just ready to get the shot and get out. However, I may go back once the temps drop a bit for a do-over. I had wanted to show more of the upper pipe, but when I took this, I didn't realize I was cropping off more than I had wanted. But the Camera Bed rise was at maximum on the tripod and I didn't want to have to re-position the camera by pulling back and starting over as I was sweating like a fountain. I wish I could print it, but don't have an 8x10 enlarger or a good area to even attempt. I have to employ a scanner.

Thanks, Leigh. Yeah, better or worse isn't really the point. I only made mention of the other shot in case someone saw this and thought, "Didn't he post that before?"
I've been photographing long enough now that I am beginning to see patterns in my work and my choice of subjects, and it comes as no surprise that I find myself drawn to the same things over and over. I can't decide if this is frustrating or not. Sometimes I want to break out and do something that I haven't done before, but it's difficult to go against one's own nature because even in rebelling we do so...in our own nature!
Jonathan
Hi Jonathan,
I know what you mean about patterns.
There's a railroad museum in Baltimore that I visit time after time.
They don't change the stock on display very often, so many visits are repeats.
Yet every time I find something new to shoot, either for lighting or perspective or emphasis or whatever.
That's part of the fun of the hobby.

I forgot to add a near disaster here with this image. While tramping through the high grass and weeds looking for a decent place to set up an open well with water some 20 ft. down almost caught me. Watch those abandoned wells that may be open or covered with rotten boards!

David, Nice shot. I recognize that window. Recently been wanting to go there but a flu virus put a stop to that.

Sorry to hear about the virus. You will be shocked when you go there again. They built a brand-new barn between the houses and visitor center. They did open the small house and let me photo inside the room. Still a great palce to me.
Thanks!

Mega Glass in Park Slope is a neighborhooed fixture. The owner told me that the place has been a glass shop since 1907. It's a beautiful old space, but with the skyrocketing rents in Park Slope, they are moving to the basement and going online only. When he told me this I asked him if I could come in and take a couple of shots with my old 1935 Eastman 8x10 camera. Since it's just around the corner I came back with the whole setup in about 15 minutes and shot two negatives. I liked this one the best. Made sure to upload it at a pretty good size so you can see all of the details on the boxes. And the dust! Neat old place.

Some Epson Photo, can't honestly even remember which one, wasn't mine. But I set it at 1200dpi.

Cool, it sounds that Epson is very good after all then, maybe for 4x5 or LF it is decent compared to using it for 35mm or MF.
Thank you very much!

Its ok, i have Epson V750 which is the best Epson scanner, and i am almost happy with it, just was curious about others scanners, maybe someone using a drum scanner or a dedicated scanner or whatever, but when looking at the results here it is really difficult to tell, and if i like some results then doesn't matter which scanner was used, and happy to know that many are done by Epson scanner anyway.
