I had never heard of this before until recently. But after reading up on it, and seeing what it can do, will have to try it. May take (2) of the same images and develop them seperately. Normal and Stand and see the difference. Thank you for sharing.

That's awesome, it looks like CGI or something. Very neat. What ASA are you using for your TMX when stand developing?

C4D
19-Nov-2012, 10:45
I rated the one above at 80iso then stand developed with 5 ML of HC-110 in 500ML of water, agitated for the first 40 seconds then twice at the 30 minute mark and poured out the developer right at one hour.

19-Nov-2012, 10:48
oh I have also noticed lately especially with tmax is to pre-wash the film three to four times in a 5 to 8 minute span with the exact temperature as the developer has really helped prevent uneven development.

Thanks. Makes a nice image on 20X24. Of course, I was after the ROOF...came around the corner and saw the inside gate shining at me. Got a lot of height out of my tripod and backed up until I was climbing a metal gate to see though the camera. Most important equipment was an old pair of rubber boots I keep in the truck. Pretty mucky Spring mud underfoot. Still cows in and out of this barn, with all that that entails.

Here's an image of me working on the roof. Second try....it got away again! Might have one more crack at it this year.

Sometimes it helps, (others, not me. I'm beyond help.), to look at the whole sequence.

84045 I just thought this roof would go. I still do, I just can't quite get in on the ground glass.

84046 Crazy end of the roof. You can see from the light that it moved a bit before I got to the gate detail. This is the East end of the barn so the light was moving to the left and putting this end in shade. I could see it coming and set up and waited. Had to chop back some branches reaching in. Don't tell anyone.

This is an old auto garage that has been converted into an antique shop in Randsburg, CA. I was attracted to this scene by the decorative door columns that seem to stand out against the worn entrance and weathered corrugated sheet metal walls. Its a slight touch of elegance, roughly attached with exposed drywall screws and left unfinished to wither away with the rest of the building.

Hand Pump, 2012
Fuji 160C, Sinar F2, 210mm f/5.6 Sinaron-W, f/16 at 1/60.

I used some left swing in the bottom one--it's amazing how little depth of field one has even at f/16 at this range. The top one got significant right shift--that's all. I didn't want my reflection in the window. I did want the flag reflected in the window, and I wanted to see into the opening on the pump just a bit. But I spent a while trying to align with those shingles, only to finally realize that no two rows are parallel and the windows are definitely not level and plumb. It's understandable--the house was built in the middle 1700's out of wood from shipwrecks.

Dashboard

This is the dashboard of a discarded pickup truck at an abandoned drilling site in the Mojave Preserve. I am doing a little series on steering wheels and dashboard from abandoned cars and trucks. Who the heck knows why, but I find it fun.

On this one, I was drawn the the dashboard detail, with the broken gauges and the eternally stuck odometer.

Ironage, is your camera in good condition? Mine is decent but missing the nut for rear swings. Have to find or fashion a replacement. I love the camera. Not much bellows draw but it is so light and sets up so fast. Yes, I used an orange filter for the clouds.

From the plaque mounted on the front of the building:

"Sun Sun Wo. Est. 1851 Chinatown Grocery - Coulterville, CA.
One of the earlier gold rush buildings, and one of the last adobe structures left, this general store was established and operated by the Chinese from 1851 until 1926. Named after It's original owners Mow Da Sun and his son, Sun Kow, this store was a major business in the area eventually branching out to Red Cloud about ten miles north-east of here. The original shelves and counters are still in the store, and there is evidence that part of the office was used as an opium den. A dirt ceiling and the fireproof walls spared the building from the fires that razed this town."

Great exercise in practical visual content. I will kick in my $0.02. I like the second image shot vertical taking out the unimportant side control panels on the left and the dead wall space on the right. I would place the edges of the image on each outside edge of the seating side medallion and use a slightly longer lens (maybe a 14") to take a step back and lower the upper edge to just above the cross member. The bail back on the Calumet should allow you to keep the camera from moving laterally when you insert a film holder and precisely frame your image. Excellent focus control and exposure to keep the highlights in check on the floor, the details on the pews from getting to dark and keeping your whites on the inside walls well balanced. Very well executed !

Kudos to you for handling the reciprocity correction so well with such a long exposure. With images such as this there are a host of places where the wheels can come off of the bus and as an 8x10 photographer I am familiar with these risks first hand. Carry this experience for similar future challenges and continue to challenge yourself as you pursue your vision and there will be many marvelous images in your portfolio.

Thank you very much Michael for the compliments!

A closeup experiment in Colonial Williamsburg. I didn't have a ruler, but I racked the bellows out to get around a 1:2 ratio and used an aperture of 1:16 to keep the top of the fence as the central interest. The crack in the paint lit by the sunbeam was what originally caught my eye. I would have preferred to swing the front, but I was on my tiptoes just framing the shot. I needed an assistant to stand on.

This was a memento mori moment for me: it's the grave of some eminent person on the grounds of the colonial Williamsburg church, which was the colonial capital at the time. The moss has eaten away half of the epitaph and the grave is reduced to scenery now. Another generation or two and the entire thing will be illegible. I wonder how much money the family of the deceased sank into the memorial.

I used front tilt and a pretty wide aperture to separate the upper surface from the background a bit.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8362/8420343417_703cfd9cc3_b.jpg

This one is an old well right in the middle of colonial Billyburg. I played around with the arrangement of the posts, pail, vents, background chimney, etc. for a while and settled on a pretty low angle with some front rise to hold the verticals. I presume there was once a pulley suspended from the iron hook.

I really appretiate for your enjoyment. I took these pictures in Mengkuang located in Xiangtan city,Hunan province. Mengkuang is named for rich manganese metal and its oxides, and it's really an industrical city. The cite was abandoned for many years, three months ago I heard that it was sold to some group, and it will be broken down soon. I realized that I should do something before it disppears, and I was lucky that I have some friends driving me to the cite. And there are some old guards who ever were the workers there.

we talked with them and tried to make them believe that we have feeling oupon the old junk, gave some cigarette, you know, for the permittion to enter into.
After I took 10 sheets, I really love the rejected machines covered with slag and even the moss.

Each weekend I go there for the shooting, (you know, the weather is not always good for the pictures), unfortunately my shutter speed cannot catch up with the speed of dismantling, yesterday I went there again, but nearly all of the blast furnaces had been completely flattened. It's a pity, anyway,I've done the best to record the forgotten time.

Here is my first real post. I'm still fine tuning my scanner so don't mind all the dust. I'm been having a hard enough time just trying to get the betterscanner holder calibrated to the right height. Taken with an old crown graphic. Not sure about exposure settings, used my nikon for a light meter. I've shot this place a lot with digital mostly a canon 5d mark 2. The detail is close between them. I think with a better scan I'd get much sharper results, but over all i'm please with the film scan. The color seems much more natural. The picture is an old cannery from around the 1940's. It's amazing how many of these places were built in the most remote locations.

Thank you, I am also trying to learn the ZS, and it would be really helpful if you could share your readings and how you put them in different zones, it will be much easier, for me to put things together, if I could get a sense of how you used it in getting this picture.

It was a while ago and I don't keep detailed records - As I recall, the shadow was a Zone III and the sunlight on the floor was an VIII or IX - I didn't meter the sky. I will usually look at the spot readings to place a Zone III value and look at how the rest of the scene will fall into place, then base my exposure on the Zone III reading.

Hope that helps -

Sorry for bothering you with this, but I see this as a perfect opportunity to learn, when you say the shadow was zone III, which exact area are you referring to, this will help me visualise also. Secondly, did you visualise that area as zone three or was it falling in that luminous range. Then I guess you took the reading with a spot meter and it gave you aperture and shutter for a middle grey, right. Then you adjusted the shutter or aperture to expose for zone three, right? Say for instance when you set the exposure to make the shadows zone three you also bring the highlight area down from say VII to V then while developing do you develop for N+ whatever is required, correct?

I may have to go back and shoot it some more. It's a pretty cool sign. The motel must have been called Excalibur or some such because there is a big sword sticking through at an angle (you can see part of the "blade" above at center right).

6-Mar-2013, 10:06
I like the first one, because it tells you that the sign is lying on the ground somewhere. Although, now that I look at it, the second one is interesting too, as if you've climbed up to the top of a motel sign. It makes me kind of dizzy. I think I'm going to have to go back and make a photo of this myself. There's a part of it (not shown in your pic) with an arrow that reads "enter," and the "enter" arrow is pointed straight at the ground. I like that sort of thing. I didn't even consider a close up. And that's the sort of thing that I'll always find fascinating, the way that two different people will see the same thing so differently. There are infinite possibilities everywhere!

6-Mar-2013, 11:22
I like it sideways! It does give one a sense of vertigo. Personally, I might've changed perspective slightly by taking one step right and maybe back one too - that might alleviate the vertigo, though maybe that's the coolest part of the photo!

For the life of me I can't see the blade.

Once again you have found fascinating images where others (which means I) might have just walked past!

I'm not so sure about that, Peter. I think if any of us walked past a 20 foot long rotting motel sign lying on its side we would stop to photograph it. You don't see these every day. (Plus, as I mentioned, Austin had to point it out to me to begin with!)

I saw the "ENTER" arrow, but the fact that it points at the ground (and the potential irony and/or symbolism) didn't occur to me at all. Ten photographers would all have very different takes on this sign, I am sure. I will definitely be going back, not just for the sign but for the whole industrial area. Thanks again for the impetus to the me out of the house.

Question is, why in the hell have you not taken the sign with you???

Because it's HUGE! While photographing it I thought, "I wonder why it's just lying here like this." But when you see the size and scale, it would take an awfully big truck and a crane to move it.

Personally, I might've changed perspective slightly by taking one step right and maybe back one too - that might alleviate the vertigo, though maybe that's the coolest part of the photo!

I moved the tripod all over the place trying to get what seemed like the best perspective, and I still wasn't completely satisfied with the result. There was also a big pile of old railroad ties right behind me, so getting the camera further back was difficult. That little Petzval was the widest lens I had with me, but it may not have been the best choice. I agree the image is a bit vertiginous, and not entirely in a good way. But like I said, I'll be going back. I hope Austin does, too, so we can compare versions. I'd also like to shoot it in color.

In the middle of a mostly empty field stands this tall chimney

And in between some trees nearby there is a ruin of an old house
(10 points to the one that first spots the naked lady!)

I don't understand this obsession about blown highlights.

If a bright area has no detail, blow it. Let the viewer understand and appreciate the fact that it's bright.
The details and tonality of the equipment in the building are much more interesting than a pure white featureless expanse of sky that's been dumbed down to ZVII.

Sheesh... Anybody'd think blown highlights equate to kiddie porn.

BTW Welly, I really like those old factory interiors. Very nice.

welly - I agree with Leigh in a general sense. However, in the first one, I personally would've lowered the camera a bit and taken a step left to simply eliminate the window entirely. Even if you had detail there it is just a distracting white blob in an otherwise homogeneous photo.

The second one seems a tad dark to me.

I guess we all see and interpret scenes differently, which is good. To me the window is important to the scene. It's a clue to size of the space.

While I'm here, I'd like to say that I really like the Saab picture above, as well as the picture of the 3 a.m. bus stop. I think they're my new favorites of yours. There's a great sort of wash of light in both that is appealing and unique.
