Love old barns, they are going fast here in North Carolina.

Same here in Missouri Jack... they have been disappearing so fast around here that my whole summer is dedicated to photograph as many barns as I can find. Supposedly the state of Missouri has the most barns of any state so I have a lot of subjects to work with. Last weekend I hit the road here in the Ozarks and found some great barns that I had a chance to photograph with my new 6x17 camera, I can't wait until I get the film back!

Facade, Zanci Station

Gelatin-silver photograph on Agfa MCC 111 VC FB Classic photographic paper, image size 19.5cm X 25.3cm, from a 4x5 Tmax 400 negative exposed in a Tachihara 45GF field view camera fitted with a 21cm f4.5 Voigtlander Heliar lens. Zanci station is near Lake Mungo in the largely treeless semi-desert of south-west New South Wales, Australia. The pairing of the tree stump on the right and the tree shadow on the left is the usual heavy handed symbolism; seemed neat at the time.

1965 T-Bird. This was a test with a new lens shot wide open. (New to me, actually from the 1930s.) It is a tad bit soft so would be better for portraits at f/5, but I didn't have any people around to test it on. At screen size the photo doesn't look as soft as it is. Gotta love 8x10 for that!

http://jason.philbrook.us/~jp/scans/2012/img618s.jpg

You can see how the mixture of soft and sharp happens in this crop! The tach lettering is nice and sharp as is the right side of the wheel. As things go out of focus, the intensity of the fuzziness gets madder. Enjoy the glow of the polished trim and the bottom of the instrument panel! f8 is real nice on this lens for a mix of detail and glow. Overcast lighting.

A P-51 Mustang that was a performer at the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Air Show this year. One of the perks of the job is all access at the air show. I had a great time talking to the crew. They were going to let me get in the cockpit for a photo, but my back was killing me so I passed for this year. I donated the digital proofing shots to the CAF for them to use as they saw fit.

Fuji Acros film and plenty of chigger bites on the legs!

I was lucky and in the right place at the right time for this subject and had time to take two different exposures. This image posted is the last exposure in which I waited for about ten minutes for the sunlight to peak through the clouds and illuminate only the barn and its surroundings, you can actually see some of the light cutoff perfectly on the fence line. The first exposure was captured in complete shade overcast and the negative turned out not as punchy or dramatic.

Here's an old home from the area where my grandfather grew up. 7704277043
I like to imagine he and his two younger sisters walking past this home when it was much newer. They migrated from Kentucky 300 miles North in the fall of 1898. It was a great joy for me to use a c. 1896 brass lens to record a part of my past. Still can't imagine how a family of 13 could have made such a journey.

Here are a couple pictures I made while in Puerto Rico a few weeks ago. They both were taken at the Central Coloso Sugar Refinery in Aguada, PR. It is a relic of the once all-important sugar economy in Puerto Rico. Coloso's history dates back to 1820, it closed in 2003. Slavery wasn't abolished in Puerto Rico until around 1875. So, for more than fifty years the plantation and the refinery were worked by slaves.

I'm thinking it's St. Mary's, KS....nice shot!

Yup, did the google street search and found it in St. Marys, KS. I was able to view it from almost the same angle I did the shot from, it appears to be mostly unchanged.

Grain Elevator shot a very long time ago and I'll be darned if can remember what town in Kansas its in, I think it is along 24 HWY between Topeka and Manhattan.
Might have to do some Goggle street searching to see if I can find it.

This is the reason I love photographing old things. This is an old abandon house covered in wisteria and wild flowere in the forground. The photo was made several years ago and the house is now gone! Some things deserve to be saved by photography, and I think this is one.
Made with a Zone VI camera several years ago.

Jack

I am with you, that house was meant to be photographed. Love it.

Finally able to track down the owners of this place a few miles from us and make sure no problems with access. This is a pixelograph... as close to the 5x7 framing as I could get. Shot one 5x7 sheet but with the darkroom down while I move a wall to enlarge it I figured I might as well post this. In a couple weeks - to a month at most - the darkroom will be up and running again and I can process the film and print.

Nice. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

My second ever 4x5. Shot with my new Graphic View. Been dying to play with the camera movements since I got it. Took a lens/shutter off my SG, and popped it on this one.

Developed in some 6 month old D-76. Arista EDU 100 film. Cut the neg down to scan it on my V600 so I could see what I shot. Now that I know the soup is still "decent" per se, I may go out tomorrow and play more.

Mill is 100 yards from the studio. My goal was to keep the word Southern sharp as I could, while playing with the movements.

The land where we live was once a part of a family dairy farm. The property was sold for development, now four houses and two barns are left, in foreclosure at this point. Only one remains owned by the family.
The photos are remains of a very large oak tree blown down by a storm this summer. The tree was removed from the house and the remains reside now in what was the pasture. In the background you see one barn that was taken down by a storm as well. Look closely and our townhouse village can be seen.

Camera – Kodak Full Plate with either a 121mm F8 Schneider or a
Goerz 12 inch Celor Series 1b lens

We have many old places near where I live. A number of them are the locations for the Photo Workshop I do with Tillman Crane, Spirit of Structure: Abandoned farms in North Dakota. This particular place may be one we are at next May. A bunch we have photographed at this year and last will be 'rested' and we will have a half dozen or more new locations for our participants to work in. Nice thing about this is that we have full access inside and out. A bonus is NO poisonous snakes up here so one can walk around without worrying about the prairie rattlers that are South and West around the Missouri River.

This one is from a scan of a 5x7 print.

Beautiful, I looked into that workshop. Will you guys will be offering it agin at the same time of the year in 2013? Thanks for the info.

Rockmount National School near Miltown Malbay, Co Clare dates from 1865 and is still in use today.

However, small rural schools like this one are under threat across Ireland for a number of reasons including emigration, falling family sizes, and the use of school facilities located nearer to parents places of work.

Thanks. When I was scanning it I was getting Stephen King "Christine" vibes, although I know it isn't spooky because it has been sitting idle in my driveway for ten years (my wife is not happy with me about that!) The photo makes it look a bit more menacing than it really is. In fact, if it started itself up and drove away on its own I would be happy.

Nice shots of the vintage motorcycles in the Galli thread, by the way. You're making me want to order a Wollaston from Reinhold. I met him a few months ago and had an excellent visit with him and his wife. Delightful people. His basement darkroom set-up was drool-inducing.

Might try flashing the paper before printing to see what details are there. I would probably dodge out the lower part of the paper during the flash just to be sure you retain maximum contrast in that shaded area.

I would just let them go -- to keep the feeling that they are skylights and the source of the light in the photo. I might darken the roof areas around the skylights (on the edges of the image, not the center) just a little to strengthen them a bit.

I would leave it as is. It gives a much more realistic sense to the photo.

That's what you actually see when you're in a factory like this.

The interiors are rather dark, and they relied on bright sunlight to improve the lighting at the workers' level.

When I posted this a couple of pages back, I was grossly unhappy with the way the forum software resized it, even though I thought it was within size parameters. It just didn't look right. Stuff needs to be seen a bit bigger, but I understand about server storage.

I've spent the weekend completely recoding my web page so that it's not so 90's-amateurish, and I've made it easier to add photos to it. So, hopefully, I'm back to direct linking for the photos I'll be working through from my week in Massachusetts.

Wondering about that gray schedule 40 conduit going from the rollway to the roof with an ell at the top. Nothing got photoshopped out did it? (though that's your choice if you did) I'm just curious.

It connects a solar panel on the roof to a controller and battery in the basement, which is the only power source they have other than running a generator. No Photoshop on that. (PS on other things, in the tonal manipulation department, of course.) the real manipulation is the substantial left shift to permit a point of view that would mostly hide the house behind this one, which I didn't want in view.

Shot this as a test for some new (old) 8x10 aerial film I just got. I shot it at EI 1.5 like the other aerial film I have, but it was overexposed by at least a stop and could have used more development, too. The tricky thing is my scanner likes overexposed shots as long as the highlights aren't blown out, but I can tell from looking at the dense negative that it needed less exposure for wet printing purposes. Since I hope to get back to contact printing soon I can't be swayed by the negs that scan the best, although I do like the way this one looks on screen.

I also made this photo using FP4, which I have not yet processed, but I think the color negative allowed the strong filtration and tonal management in Photoshop that gave me the graphic element I was looking for. It will be interesting to compare this with the results from the FP4 when I process it.

This photo took an hour to set up. I was looking down into the ground glass while cantilevering myself over the camera, dripping sweat on the focus screen, and trying to adjust just the correct swing to run the focus plane down the face of the stairs. It took many attempts, partly because it was just so hard to see in that dark space. The Fujiroid test shot required an exposure of 13 minutes, and then I pulled the holder before replacing the dark slide. It's sort of a solarized cyanotype-looking version of this, heh. But at least I knew I had image. Fujiroid may have the worst reciprocity failure of any film I've ever used. The 160C had very little by comparison.

Rick, both of those last images are fantastic! Good work.

Well, that's a little better! Thanks.

It's funny about the red thing. The floor boards of that loft looked in the initial scan as though they'd been painted red, rather than just being pine boards with a thousand layers of wax and dirt on them. Turned out it was too saturated from the scan. When I backed down the saturation, it became natural. Then, I balanced the white walls to neutral.

The stairs were painted green at some point in their lives, and the walls were teal at some other point. In color, it was just too...colorful.

I have this feeling I'm going to be moving back into black and white, even without the eventual loss of color film on the market.

You did a fabulous job! Make sure that you do a good five minutes of pre wash in water before you develop and when you develop negatives that have sky in them as this image does, only do a small number at a time and cycle regularly from the bottom of the stack to the top and gently push down. Even skies are a function of good procedure. I like the infrared monocle for my tray developing work and justify its inclusion into my darkroom because it prevents me from having to acquire more costly tanks and rotary processing systems. Being able to see what you are doing as opposed to the touch and feel procedure in the dark is a godsend.

Make sure that you do a good five minutes of pre wash in water before you develop...
That brings up a good point. What developer did you use?

If you use a two-part developer like Diafine, you absolutely DO NOT use a pre-wash.
It will ruin the development cycle.

C4D very nice clouds! Can you do stand development with other developers? Do you use a deep tank? Did you use a filter for the sky?

My experience with stand developing has been with HC-110, Caffenol, and I know that Rodinal works very well.
For 4x5 I use a HP Combi Plan tank with 1200 ML of solution and with 120 film I use a Paterson universal tank.
I used a polarizer filter and a Singh-Ray 3 stop hard grad filter for the sky.

A tool of some description...

It's a lip jack. Put a pipe or wood handle in the part poking out the back, move it up and down, and the hook on the front ratchets up. Used before hydraulic bottle jacks.

Very nice photo. It looks like front swing was used. I can't help but notice it has "MADE IN USA."

Thank you! Yep, front swing. I'm still figuring out swings/tilts etc. so this was a bit of an experiment.

Stand development is something I have been experimenting with in the past 6 months and with my trials I have noticed that I really like the process with dramatic skies especially the highlighted parts of the clouds. So now I think I will be using stand pretty often in situations like the old house on the hill. As with compositions with blank skies or large amounts of negative space I stay away from stand because I do not want to risk the chance with uneven development particularly with 4x5 sheet film.
