This is the inside of an old corn crib that is now used to dry gourds. Now rather than the corn crib the owner calls it the gourd house.

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts was where the workshop was based.

Still got a couple batches of processing to go before I show any intentionally soft stuff from the workshop.

Thanks JP, but after clicking on the link, I see I would not have been able to afford the tuition anyway :( Sure looked interesting. Would like to see more of your work from the workshop.

Palace of Fine Art San Francisco

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2172/5751266647_f133d524b0.jpg

The Palace of Fine Art was constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition which was a world fair held in San Francisco during 1915. Ansel Adams' parents allowed him to drop out of school that year and gave him a daily pass to attend the fair which he did. Among the many artists that exhibited in the Palace was Edward Weston. For further information on the 1915 Exposition and the Palace of Fine Arts, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama-Pacific_International_Exposition_(1915) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Fine_Arts

Here is a watercolor painted by artist Colin Cooper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Campbell_Cooper who won a silver medal at the fair:

Artists Announce They've Found All The Beauty They Can In Urban Decay
July 23, 2011 | ISSUE 47•29

DETROIT—After spending more than a century exploiting urban decay to create deeply moving, socially conscious works of art, the art world announced Tuesday that it had captured all the beauty it was going to find in rusted-out cars, abandoned houses, and condemned industrial sites.

Visited Cline’s Antiques this week. Looks more like a junk yard than antiques, but you decide.

1- Small coal heater, popular when I was young.
2- Large tin chickens and old gas pumps
3- 5 gallon milk can, stove, gas pump, cross, plus whatever

Number 1 and 2 with Cooke Series 11 lens
Number 3 with Scovill Lens

Could have spent the day never shooting the same “stuff”, or
ever seeing the whole place.

I don't really know. I think that I underexposed it under the UV lights. Getting used to viewing a print before it is developed out is, to me, a bit of a problem at the moment. I'm going to try a couple of different papers in the next week as I don't have a lot of Platine to play with and my nearest supply is in London as far as I know.

It's a shame about the condition of those pianos. We recently acquired a similar style 1895 Knabe, and it's a wonderful instrument to play. They're good photo subjects, though. You might try some closeups.

I've been using Crane's with great success. In discussing the reasons why a print washes down the drain, Christopher James says:

"Only a few things could have gone wrong...Nearly 85% of the time the reason is that your exposure wasn't long enough to harden the ...sensitizer. The other 3 5%reasons..you forgot to add...; the emulsion was still wet when you made your exposure; the...you used was rotten or impure."

Thanks Thomas,
The emulsion was dry, I'm pretty sure that the exposure time was too short. The second one more than paid for the first. More next week then the kitchen needs decorating (not my decision).

Several years ago I was driving around downtown San Jose and spotted this building and set my Toyo 45CF up across the street and shot the top image with a 300mm Nikkor-M on Fuji RVP 100F. A few minutes later the owner of the shop came over and gave me the photo shown above. Apparently this is either the oldest or one of the oldest building (I forget now which) still standing in downtown San Jose. Note the funky tree where the light post now stands and the current lean of the center post.

I think you are right Steve. I had second thoughts about it being a tree after I had posted. The photo the owner gave me is apparently a wet print printed on 8x10 Agfa Prestige with a machine printed ID number typical of store prints. It shows the rebate which has circular holes similar to 35mm but not the square holes prevelant today, and although they are evenly spaced they do not lie along a straight line but exhibit a slight bow shape on the top and bottom. The image area itsels exhibits a bow show and some of the circular holes disappear into it.

Interesting light and contrast on the weathered door. Perhaps a little too much for me as it seems to fight the age and feel of the building.

Preston, I like the way it is, unless you crop both sides and maybe some off the bottom.

This is from the Arizona strip.

OK, I give up. I'm sure it's totally obvious, but can anyone tell me how to insert photos on the revised site? My old procedure when importing stuff from flickr was to pick the size I wanted over there, then right click on 'copy image address' and then paste that here using 'insert image.' When I try that now only a link shows up (no photo). Also, is there a 'preview' reply option? I can't seem to find that either. Thanks in advance, Austin the Luddite

Go advanced should give you a preview. Insert image is in the advanced part. You could also just make your own tag:

These photo were made at Reed Gold Mine, a North Carolina Historic Site about 25 miles from my home.
In 1899 this was the site of the first authenticated gold fine in America. Mr. Reed’s son found a gold colored 17 pound rock in a creek near his home. The rock was used as a door stop for 3 years before it was sold for $3.50 not knowing it was a gold nugget worth $3500.00 at the time.

I really like the first one. Clean lines and very well composed.

Thanks! So far, that's my choice too, but I still have a few more to develop. The sun was intermittently diffused by fog, so when the car was lit just right, I was thrilled with how the lines appeared and the shadow under the car wasn't too strong (something that happens too much). The simple lens reduces contrast a little too.

Thank you. And yes, they do grow the mosquitos and horse flies big down here. Most have saddles.

Shot this scene with T-Max 100 (expired 1999) and Velvia 100 (expired 2001). To me the black and white version looks a little Gothic while the color looks almost pastoral. I can't decide if I regret the choice of foreground focus. The point was to lead your eye away from where it wants to go (the decrepit structure), but I wish I had shot one with the building in focus for comparison. Maybe next time.
