Wanting to stay in the 6x17 format, the trees and street got trimmed a little.
When I composed the shot, I composed it for 6x17 with the street, sky above the trees, and car included.
I prefer my original perspective but I can appreciate someone else liking something different.
Just having fun. :)
Sure it's your shot. I can't get into your head. Every time I go into the pizza store, there are about a dozen different types. Pineapple pizza??!!?? When I grew up there were maybe 3: plain, meatball and pepperoni. :)
Thank you for sharing your perspective, Michael.
...Here's a tighter crop, consistent with the 6x17 format, for your consideration.
I enjoy your original crop more. It opens up the image a little more for story-telling and allows us to treat it visually as a gas station and drive on by if we don't need fuel.
Plus the little round cloud balances the two-door garage nicely.

We all hone our personal vision by looking at others' work and thinking, "this is what I would have done differently!" I think that's a good tool and helpful in developing a personal style.
When we get around to criticizing (in the positive sense, as in art criticism) the mature work of others as expressions of the artists' intent, then I think we need to be cautious about projecting our own personal vision onto that of others. I try to keep this latter to myself (unless queried, then watch out!) and instead try to understand the objective of the photographer and the meaning of the photograph in that context.
I'd be hesitant to change Darr's cropping, since it is obviously a well-considered decision. Instead, I'd be looking for what the image is trying to say and if I find that successful, meaningful and intensely done.
I think we sometimes confuse the two.
Best,
Doremus

What two things are we confusing?
Also, I think listening to what others think of my work and how they think it could be improved is of value to me. I make errors. I might miss something that someone else picks up. Having others reflect and what they think, improves my work. I don't have to agree with their ideas in the end. But their comments are valuable to me. If my message isn't getting through or I can make it more effective, shouldn't I want to know about that? Of course, people are sensitive about criticism. But artists should get over that if they want to get better. I didn't detect any of that sensitivity from Darlene.

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to view and comment on my photo.
I'm genuinely grateful for the diverse opinions and feedback.
For those who appreciated my original 6x17 crop, thank you for your support.
The composition was a conscious choice; I'm glad it resonated with some of you.
As for the suggestion of a tighter crop, I appreciate that perspective, too. Art is subjective, and what speaks to one person might not to another.
Seeing the image in a different light was an interesting exercise, and I value the opportunity to see how it might be viewed through someone else's eyes.
Each artist has a unique vision, and when we put our work out there, it's a reflection of our personal perspective and the story we want to tell.
Altering another artist's work can shift that narrative. While feedback and reinterpretation can be valuable, there's also importance in respecting the original intent.
We can all appreciate the countless ways art can be seen and understood.
Once again, thank you for the constructive dialogue!
Darr
Hey Darr,
I've been to Carrabelle, too. First in the early 70s. And last in the mid-90s. I'll look some more, but I don't think any of my photos survived. I was shooting a 2 1/4 TLR in the 70s.
I agree about the light. On some days the Gulf is almost like a lake with soft breezes. And Carrabelle is an interesting old place.
I tried photographing downtown Brunswick a few years ago but was so harassed by beggars on bicycles, I gave up. Now that the tourists have largely gone, I should that the Speed Graphic and shoot the St. Simons village.
I'd love to see more of your Carrabelle stuff.
John,
Grab your Speed Graphic and shoot the St. Simons village when you can!
I will post more images of Carrabelle when I can.
I am heading out that way sometime next month.
Take care!

You and I think alike. :)
I didn't detect any of that sensitivity from Darlene.
I tend to 'crop with my feet,' meaning the composition you see is precisely how I envisioned capturing the moment.
Further cropping sometimes constrains that vision. Nonetheless, seeing how others interpret my work is genuinely intriguing.
PS: On a lighter note, I'm glad to hear you're also a pizza enthusiast! There's nothing like a good slice to bring people together.

I prefer to use the sieves for the lens, it is a pleasure for me to see the halos getting smaller or wider and I can set it as wide as I want it. It is the only lens with this option.
