This is pretty old - back from 60s or 70s, I mean, 1260s or 1270s... So it might fit in this thread...

Ok, I've got a new toy to revisit a lot of old film. I hope this won't get to be a bore, but it's been on my to-do list for 30+ years. Segovia on Vericolor III, Type S. Scanned today on the V850.

How did you know 1.2mm was the correct height for best focus? Wouldn't you have to check different heights to find the focal point, first with a wet scan and then with a dry scan? While I never did a wet scan, I did find that there was a considerable difference in focus with my V850 doing dry scans with the furnished holders even with ones of the same format. (The scanner comes with two film holders for each of the different formats.)

Thank you Alan, always nice to hear from you. I have exhibited a slightly different photograph of the mission taken in 1967. I had not printed this version, from the same day in 1967, until recently. Have been going through sixty-five years of negatives and prints, discarding as I go. This one I think I'll keep.

Bryan, that top example is nice...but might I suggest that you pencil a line onto your ground glass to accommodate the film holder rebate bump? Otherwise, in this example, you'll be hard pressed to realize (assuming you'd want this in a print) any "breathing room" underneath that keel and shadow. Again, you might not want to include this space anyway...but at least with such an indicator line you'd have a choice.
Yep, one of the few times that's happened...I usually compose a bit less tight. But I was up against a little creek, slipping into the sand/water. My film holder in the Beseler cuts off a little, and my original thought was to have the diagonal keel end-to-end on the paper. We will see...

27-Jun-2022, 09:32
Bryan...yes - if that shadow were to intersect the bottom of the print at its mid-point (or adjust for this for future matting) - this could work really well...so long as the very bottom of that shadow can breathe just a little. Will be interesting to see how you print this!

Bryan, I like the top one as well. The choices you made create a kind of metaphor, to my eye, with the emphasis on the jagged edge of the prow and and the sand and rock in the shadow rising up like a wave that might cause a shipwreck. A sort of implied look into the past

Thank you, Ben. I am surprised that there're still some details in the window. The exposure was f45 and 16s, around 8 stops overexposed for the window! I did stand development, which is L110 1:100 for 45 minutes, with initial temp 70F and ending temp around 60F (I put the tank in my refrigerator).

I'm continuing the pursuit of salted paper printing, and the making of negatives that fit the long tonal scale of salted paper. Although Ilford FP4 is the film most often recommended for making an ideal salt negative, I'm finding Delta 100 does a good job also, but with a bit different result.
I'm developing both FP4 and Delta 100 in PMK Pyro at 2:4:100 dilution, 10-12 minutes at 72F This image is from one of the thinner, less developed Delta 100 negatives. Contrast and density is ideal for POP printing, and for scanning, but you'd have difficulty making a good silver gelatin print from this negative.
Intrepid 5x7 camera with the 1930's Kodak 6 & 3/8" Anastigmat lens, at f16.5. Exposure was 1/2 second, rating Delta 100 at 80 ASA. The PMK produces a denser, more contrasty neg at the 2:4:100 dilution (double whats normal), and in part, this is what contributes to the bold tonal scale of this image.
I look forward to printing it on salted paper.

Well done Paul. The tonal scale is perfect so great job in iterating to that point. I recently pulled some Delta 100 out of the freezer and gave it a go and agree with you. It inherently develops quicker, but is quite sharp and contrasty if you keep it from getting away from you.

I'm spending most of my photography energy these days on getting optimal negatives for salted paper printmaking, and its been less of a challenge than I expected. Ellie Young's document (https://studylib.net/doc/18291219/mechanisms-of-controlling-colour-and-aesthetic-appearance...) was especially useful to me, as I specifically wanted to make in-camera negatives (not inkjet negs, which I have tried and failed at before).
I'm amazed at how good the 90+ year old Kodak Anastigmat lens is. If you're working in B&W, they're still very worthwhile. My 6&3/8" Anastigmat in a fully functional shutter cost me $65, shipping included!

Adams Paper Company, Wells River, Vermont. 2014.
Toyo 57M, HP5. Shot with a 14" Goerz Artar lens. Exposure not recorded.
In the late 1890's this company was one of two commercial paper manufacturers that specialized in the newly invented and VERY popular rolled toilet paper. The company flourished until the 1950's, when more modern manufacturing techniques were underpricing them out of business. They managed to struggle along, making ends meet until 1971. That was the year the EPA stepped in and measured the effluent that they were dumping into the Wells River...which flowed directly to the Connecticut River just a few miles away. The toxic waste was miles beyond what was considered acceptable, including PCB, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals and dioxin. To top it off, they were a petri dish of virulent organisms. Upon being ordered to clean it up or face hefty fines, the parent corporation, the Robertson Paper Company, of Bellows Falls, Vermont, spun the Vermont company off and had it file for bankruptcy.

And you did, with wonderful results! As Chauncey suggests, I bet the real deal is spectacular.
I actually became familiar with the format when Michael and Paula dropped by twenty years ago and showed their work. Nice to hear that Michael inspired you.

The marvel of the 8x20 camera of Michael's was only surpassed by the horror on my face when I realized on that the rare Deardorff, Michael had pounded a series of carpet tacks into the base of the rear standard to hold a strip of fabric inhibiting light from coming up into his viewing area. Michael laughed and said "my cameras are working cameras". Michael and Paula stayed with me a number of times when they came to Denver. It was a pleasure and an honor to get to know them. Inspiration comes in many forms. Thankfully, this was one of them.

Patrick, I think the one with the yellow filter would be superior if you gave it a half a stop less expose. My experience with ortho is that it does not respond the same way as pan film to filter factors. Cutting back about a half a stop would give the bricks better substance...although it would also increase the density of the sky. Personally, I think that would be okay, but your vision might not see it that way.

Michael, I have already give it one stop less already. I would like to have seen the sky a bit more darken.
Ortho and Yellow filter are still a bit new to me.

...Austin there is a bald man with a very loose wig (18th century magistrate?) staring at the camera from just above the roof peak - but I think his vision is likely blocked by that lower rung. Very nice feel of symmetry and love the open shadows and what appears to be blotches of lichen on those steps.
And Patrick - I've had so much fun clicking back and forth between your two (non filtered and filtered) Ortho images. A bit counter-intuitive in some ways when compared to panchromatic films - and I like them both actually.
Emmanuel.

That's awfully nice of you to say. Behind it is a sad story. Situated in the backside of the daily frenetic rush goings on in the Santa Clara Valley, the rarely visited east part of the coastal mountain ranges of California, off a nearly forgotten twisty dusty two lane road. The family homestead, not at all like the Cuyama Valley, founded sometime in the 1850-60's. What a starkly different world the San Joaguin Valley was than compared to today, even more so just a couple of hundred years earlier. Largest lake west of the Mississippi. Massive wetlands, native canoe possible from the further south north half way to what is now Oakland; millions of Beaver and Muskrat, Otter, Deer, Elk, Antelope...Pacific Flyway visiting upon it millions of waterfowl, some now extinct. California Grizzly Bear. Wild native horses. The rich wildlife riparian zone, dam builders, the Golden Beavers once numbering 200-400 million, down to 100,000, near extinction, possibly saved only by a change in 'hat' fashions. A paradise given up for gold, cotton farming and same such.

Ebony RSW + Nikon Nikkor 90/8 + CatLabs X Film 80 II (colorized) + 510 Pyro semi-stand
Using a Wacom pen and PS, I colorize some of my B&W work for fun. I no longer choose to shoot color film (digital replaced that for me), but I miss transparencies.
I am new to the CatLabs X Film 80 II, and it is okay if anyone wants to know, as I took a chance with it and could not find where anyone shot it and then posted about it.
Lots of green dye left in the prewash. I washed it out three times with a 3-minute wait between two 2-minute baths of gentle agitation (Paterson tank/MOD54 reel).
Shot the film close to 80 asa, and I usually bracket another sheet about a stop more with B&W film for an extra negative in case of damage, etc. The film did well at box speed.

Nice job. How do you color BW with a Wacom so it doesn't bleed? For example the red on the Coke sign yet the lettering remains white?

That seems difficult to do also the leaves on the tree with the sky background.
Are their Wacoms that have screens that you can use the tool on rather than just a blank pad?

Maybe there are, I do not know, as the medium size board and pen I use are old and well-used (scrapped up), three models back probably, and purchased used.
Before digital, I applied Dr. Martin Dyes (https://www.docmartins.com/collections/dye-based) and Marshall's Photo Oils (https://www.dickblick.com/products/marshalls-photo-oils/) directly on prints, so I went into developing a technique in PS that I adopted from hand-coloring prints.
The negative is 4x5" and digitized using my 50mg digital back, making it very large and great for enlarging while I work.
I set my colors between 10-20% opaque to mimic the transparency of the dyes and oils I am accustomed to using on a print.
And the rest is history. Practice makes perfect, or what I would edit and say, "makes good technique."

You're very good. I first saw hand painted photos when I was a kid and the formal family shots were done on BW film. Then the artist would paint in skin colors and rosy red cheeks especially on children's shots like the one of my sister and me pictured below.
Then I ran into it again when I visited Clyde Butcher's gallery in Venice Florida. His wife Nicki, an artist in her own right, colors BW photos. We bought a couple when there and mounted them on our walls at home. Recently she put together a book of her work that I bought as a gift for my wife who was the one who bought her work when we were there originally. The book is done so professionally. Beside the work, the binder, pages, prints, everything about it is first class and at a reasonable price. You might want to take a look at it. Best regards.

Wow, that's lovely. Out of interest, how long does it take you? Presumably you don't colour each individual leaf... :)
That browny-red really reminds me of the autochrome color palette.
Thanks, Peter.
This image probably took 3-4 hours.
But I never colorize in one sitting. Since I work on the computer most days, I work a little here and there on an image while doing my work on the computer.
I get bored sometimes and start colonizing an image in the background of my workspace.

The same setup as the previous two shots. A drop in focus at the top of the frame here - partly because I decided to see what it would look like shot wide open, so I sacrificed some depth of field, but probably mostly because the wind was quite gusty and my darkcloth was flapping uncontrollably and making it very difficult to work!

Thanks Martin. A yellow filter occasionally, but not for this shot. I expect much will be a result of post processing, using contrast etc. to give the image some 'pop'.

This is one of my first images I took using 4x5. Ilford D100, Toyo 4x5 monorail, 210 G-Claron at like f/9 or something. At night, no moon in Holbrook, AZ. I totally guessed at the exposure in some sense. I metered off what I could, then applied reciprocity (I think) and got this image.

Very nice image. Modest tightening suggestion. I would recommend the right side of the image end at the beginning of the road (include the house in the background) and the left side just past the opening in the fence. Ensures that the eye stays dominantly with the gas station. My eye wants to go down the road to the right side of the image as always tends to happen with roads. Just my $0.02.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, Michael.
I appreciate your input. Personally, I feel the inclusion of the car adds to the ambiance of the scene.
Nonetheless, I respect varied tastes in composition. Here's a tighter crop, consistent with the 6x17 format, for your consideration.

Very nice. Now I feel the photograph is all about the gas station. What I would look for with my 8x20. Feininger would be pleased that the image now is more concise.

I like the cropping and it does focus on the station. But you cut off the top of the trees which should have been kept IMO>

Wanting to stay in the 6x17 format, the trees and street got trimmed a little.
When I composed the shot, I composed it for 6x17 with the street, sky above the trees, and car included.
I prefer my original perspective but I can appreciate someone else liking something different.
Just having fun. :)

I tend to photograph what I think of as relationships rather than things, so I prefer the original, too. When I was in camera clubs they drove me crazy with all the talk of subject and center of interest - always things.

Hey John,
The gas station is located in Carrabelle, FL. Carabelle has felt the brunt of numerous hurricanes in recent years. Situated less than an hour southwest of me, I am captivated by its unique lighting and ambiance.
Carrabelle stretches along US 98, bordering the St. George Sound. The gas station faces the water, and the water was less than 1,000 feet behind the camera, which is why the light is so vivid, bouncing off the building's facade.
However, it's disheartening to witness the gradual erosion of this town. A significant stretch of US 98 that passes through Carrabelle fell to the sea during Hurricane Michael's wrath.
Moreover, Mexico Beach, located roughly 50 miles west, faced utter devastation from the same hurricane.
With each visit, I can't help but feel like I'm chronicling the story of a Florida town that's dwindling both economically and in terms of its physical landscape. The ambiance there is poignant and evocative.
This is what I try to capture when I photograph the streets and structures of Carabelle.
On the Georgia coast, you may have a similar town that struggles to survive.
Darr
I haven't been to Carabelle in years. I used to pass through at least once a year, but not so much now. I always thought it would be an amazing place to document, and a friend of mine actually used to have a vacation house there. I never did have the time to try staying there for a summer and just shooting like every day. I look forward to seeing what else you document there.

Bryan,
Let me know if you ever get around to coming back!
Lunch/dinner will be on me. :)
I don't care what Feininger says, he did what he did in is own right. What artists and especially photographers say about their work or intentions is quite relative to me, because photography is also a very intuitive act. And I do not like the cropping at all. As if the viewer has to be taught: 'look at what I mean'. I also agree with what Alan Klein said about the trees, awfull.

Hey Darr,
I've been to Carrabelle, too. First in the early 70s. And last in the mid-90s. I'll look some more, but I don't think any of my photos survived. I was shooting a 2 1/4 TLR in the 70s.
I agree about the light. On some days the Gulf is almost like a lake with soft breezes. And Carrabelle is an interesting old place.
I tried photographing downtown Brunswick a few years ago but was so harassed by beggars on bicycles, I gave up. Now that the tourists have largely gone, I should that the Speed Graphic and shoot the St. Simons village.
I'd love to see more of your Carrabelle stuff.
