I really like old black-and-white photos. Thanks.
Old B&W photos? These? Reminds me of the day I had my 4x5 set up in the park and some dude sees it and remarks "I bet that camera takes great OLD pictures" (emphasis mine).

This is TERRIFIC!
Agreed!
I'm surprised that is wide-open, though I have no idea what aperture constitutes "wide-open" on that lens! Cool shot with a lot of interest from the lens. You should share it in the recent thread asking about soft-focus lenses for architecture, seems relevant.

I get similar results with a Darlot pillbox landscape lens, normally f22, but if I unscrew the front of the lens and leave just the brass tube and rear lens, I calculated f9 for mine. It's one of my favorites for intimate woodland scenes, I never thought to photograph something like the above with it. I suspect it is also short for the image size, mine is 14" used on 8x10 and I don't get swirlies on the edges like above.

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm trying to remember, but I think wide open is f/6. Jody, yes, it is the same on this lens, just unscrew the front so it is a brass tube and rear lens. Using a dark slide as a shutter, exposure was faster than my wrist could move, so I taped a 3 stop ND filter to the front to get the speed in the ballpark. OK, I'll make a post in the soft focus as well. :o

Matt, that is a very nice image, and it brings back memories of the years I lived in London. Is it the very wide lens and perspective corrections that make the Palace appear 2-dimensional? It made me think of movie sets where the houses are just “fronts” with some bracing to hold them up!

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comments!
The image didn't have any perspective correction applied to it. Maybe the camera needs repositioning to the right to capture some of the wall on the right-hand-side?

I would keep it just as it is, I like photographs that make you look twice, and maybe think about them more. As I said, IMHO it is a very nice image.

I, too, like that image the way it is. It reminds of a missed photo opp years ago, and I still kick myself for not photographing it. There was an old stand-alone beer joint called "Ben's Place" (not mine) in my hometown, and owing to the way the building's right side wall angled in toward the back, when you looked at the front façade from just the right angle, the whole building looked as if it were just a thin sliver. Never got around to photographing it, as it would have required setting up my large format camera on a traffic island in the middle of the road. Didn't feel like having an audience of motorists in one of the more sketchier parts of town. Ben's Place is gone now, replaced with a Walgreen's.

Thanks. My wife says the fence and the barn are competing with each other. I have two subjects. She has a point. One thing I noticed. This was taken with a Fujinon SWD 75mm f/5.6 lens without a center filter. I don't see any vignetting. Do you?
Gary Beasley
31-Aug-2020, 14:43
I can see the vignetting but it actually contributes to the image to draw attention inwards.
Louie Powell
1-Sep-2020, 04:26
I do like the picture, but I think your wife is right. But rather than the problem being that there are two subjects, I see the fence as a psychological barrier blocking the viewer's access to the house. The fence is telling the viewer 'you can't go there' which conflicts with the appeal of the house.
Jim Jones
1-Sep-2020, 08:49
The fence makes a more appropriate environment for the subject than just grass. It works well with the vignetting.

Remains of the 1950's era radar dome East of Colville, WA provide a rich environment for paintball warriors and graffiti artists. The offerings change every time I visit. This is early morning in August with a 90mm lens in my Toyo 45G, using Rollei infrared film, scanned from my Ilford print. Usually I do interiors here, but this time I just had 2 sheets of infrared film left on a trip through Idaho. Explore it yourself, there's a lot to play with!

+1. The movement of the sky and foliage gives the architecture an eerie feeling somehow. Very nice.

I'm digging both of those
Not sure where to put this. My Dad passed away back in June - this is his hydraulic jack. I guess he acquired it back in the 50's or 60's. As far back as I can remember we used it to jack up the vehicles for oil changing, tire rotating, etc. As a kid we lived in a mobile home for many years and it would need leveling from time to time as it settled. I remember many times crawling around under it with that jack, a level, some wooden shims, and a hammer.
Shot on 4X5

A friend of mine had a front porch with one corner sagging. He bought an inexpensive jack like this, jacked up the porch, then cemented the jack in place!
BTW, both my parents died several years ago, and I have a lot of their things, including clothes of my dad's that I can wear. It gives me a continued sense of connection with them, as this jack will probably do for you and your father. I love the patina of a life well lived by that jack...
h2oman, likewise, I have lots of my Dads clothes - and I have one of his USN rank insignia's on my hat. Yes, the jack is very worn, just about all the paint is long gone, I may still run across the handle in his shop, but I suspect it is gone, so I just use a wooden dowel to operate it.
BTW - one of my distant ancestors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lane) was the first governor of Oregon (territory?)
Well, according to Wikipedia, he was governor of Oregon Territory, which would be even better than just Oregon! All of present-day Oregon, Washington and Idaho and maybe the best of Wyoming (where I grew up, can't tell from the map if it included the Wind River Mountains, one of Wyoming's finest features) and Montana. Interesting!

Here's something else that's old. I'm getting back to printing Kodak Vericolor III Type S negatives on Ilford MG paper. Some from Stonehenge were good for that. There's frost on the grass and a wall of fog behind the stones just after sunrise on a November day.

That place is not a destination for me - it's about 4 hours from where I live. I used to pass by once or twice a year when driving to visit my parents while they were still alive. Usually my wife was with me, and wasn't too keen to stop because it was the middle of an 11-12 hour day of driving. Another time we went by the gate was open, so we went in. She was happier then, because she got to poke around a bit.

I like both, John. I'd like to see Stonehenge, but am afraid it would be a touristy disappointment? I have a Fay Godwin book with a number of photos of other standing stones in Britain that are appealing as well.
h2oman, this wide view has wonderful counterpoints -- the dramatic clouds and the foreground brush; the house and the plateau at right, whose curve mirrors the stand of trees; the play of light. an exceptional moment well-seen.

When I was a child, physical access to Stonehenge was no trouble. Now the volume of visitors has brought more controls. If only I'd had a large format camera back then!
The British Isles are covered by neolithic monuments and sites. But Stonehenge is definitely the most 'monumental'.

Thanks. That was a time I told my wife "We have to stop - this light and the clouds are too good to pass up." She's a good woman, better than I deserve!

Three very nice images! Greg, are you familiar with Jay Dusard? He used a 4x10 box camera for many of his images. I highly recommend his book "Open Country," which you can pick up pretty cheaply used.

Thanks h20man. Jay is a friend of mine. & I had this camera made after seeing his images for "Open Country." Mine turned out prettier than Jay's since it was built by a cabinet maker friend of mine who used solid black walnut instead of Baltic Birch ply (Keith Canham sold me the back). Jay did get to see the camera when we met up in Wyoming & gave it his nod of approval. That's a marvellous book & I always enjoy Jay's vision no matter what format he's using.

Beautiful!
Greg Y, The print is apparently older and printed on Forte Warm Tone, Fibre based paper.
Is this the older paper with Cadmium? Can't tell on the screen but if so - have you found anything now that can get the same buttery tanned leather look that older paper produced?
I do like the image. Also the 90 XL. My Uncle used one for 4x10 and even looking at this and his images many don't believe the lens covers the format.
Yes Willie, it's an older print. I had this one and some others more usually on Azo. I loved that Forte VC and the Fortezo graded even more. I haven't found anything even remotely close. These days i try to squeeze as much as i can out of Ilford Warm Tone. I don't work in the format any more, having sold that camera. The 90XL was close in coverage ...i never had the centre filter either, Just made holders out of foam core and glued gels to them. I can't remember if the super symmar 110 was available at the time or just too expensive for me.

Bobbotron: Nice combination of nature and industry.
After the "Love Nest" above I found this opportunity just around the corner. Park workers had whacked off a whole hillside of blackberries revealing steps to a mysterious new chamber. I returned with digi-camera to test battery flash to light up the entry, and then waited for the 3-day storm to pass. This is "To A Lesser Pyramid," in the spirit of the Mayan ruins I photoed years ago. TriX with yellow filter, 150 mm lens in field camera, remote Vivitar in entrance, scanned from print.

Thank you kindly John! I'm glad I finally enlarged that photo, the negative had been floating around my darkroom for 6 months, waiting it's turn. It is a much better negative than I thought it might be. The composition is a little weird, but I think I like that.
Yours are slightly ominous and interesting steps! What's the circular structure near the ground on the left?

@mtsclt That hut image is just lovely. On my monitors, though, it feels overly contrasty. This could be due to scanning artifacts, my monitor calibriation, or the actual negative in question.
I find that what is often seen as "to contrasty" is actually just "too dark", and vice versa.

"One Owner, Needs Work"
Tachihara, 90mm Schnieder, 1sec, f32
I had been invited to photograph a hundred-odd year old shearing shed at a property called "Ledgerton", near the farming community of Yass (NSW, Australia). I did get a very nice image of the shed's interior then decided to wander around the other farm buildings.
I found the original farm house, now largely in a state of disrepair. By the time I had the camera set up a jet had flown across the sky, I felt that the resultant contrail ruined the shot and decided to wait for it to dissipate.
There must have been no wind at 30,000 feet because half an hour later I was still waiting.
Then I realised that the contrail nicely mimicked the shed's fallen timber slab, so I exposed the film.
Why "One Owner, Needs Work"?, well the shed was built by the current owner's ancestors so if it hasn't exactly had one owner it's certainly been owned by the same family, and it sure needs work.

This particular morning, the fog in the mountains seem to be flowing out in between the peaks in the distance almost like an avalanche. What drew me to this scene is the serenity of the village in the morning with the eternal background which looks almost like those Chinese watercolour paintings. Both the contrast between human elements and nature, and the contrast between the sharp foreground and soft ethereal background is what makes this image interesting for me personally.
Shot was made on the Chamonix Alpinist X 8x10 at 600mm n Fomapan 100 then home developed with Rodnial 1+50 dilution and scanned on a flatbed.

Here's a little scene I shot almost two weeks ago at the Jingshan park in Beijing in the afternoon. I was just wandering around wanting to try some fresh Velvia 100 I'd just bought and I thought this red door and wall would show off the saturated colours very well. To my surprise, as I set up the camera and waited for the light, the crowds became less and less and only as I was leaving, I found out from the lady in charge of the front gate that it was already passed closing time of the park and she had actually closed then entrance but left me alone to finish my image! These two shots were made at the two different corner towers at the Forbidden City in Beijing a couple months ago on the Chamonix Alpinist X 8x10 camera with my Fujinon C 300mm lens. The first one was a sunrise shot of the eastern tower made on Provia 100F and the second was the western tower shot just before sunset on Velvia 100. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by how the Velvia 100 was able to handle the dynamic range and as expected the colour rendering of both films are significantly different. I have yet to experiment with large format Velvia 50, but I'll need a more suitable subject for that.

These are nice shots. I'd expect Provia to provide more range. But the shadow on the from part of the building with Provia seems to be the difference. I think you're going to like Velvia 50. I do; more than Velvia 100. Problem is I have to buy Velvia 50 in 4x5 directly from Japan and it's expensive. I think you may have to do the same with 8x10.

Yes, you are right, I did already buy a box from Japan and indeed it's expensive, the main issue for me is the import duty, if only I can ship to Hong Kong and pick it up myself, that would bring down the expense by about 30%.
I'm still waiting for the right conditions to bring out the Velvia, hopefully I'll get some opportunities this summer.

I took this some years back with the Toyo 45cf while touring the island on my bicycle. I distinctly remember taking the shot but can't remember exactly how I printed it. It must be a salt print toned with gold on what appears to be watercolor paper. I was using Fabriano Aristrico Extra White back then and the paper sits exactly on my Kodak 5x7 contact printing frame but there doesn't appear to be coating marks immediately adjacent to the negative but they do appear at the outer fringes of the paper. Maybe I applied Blick's white masking tape which I did back then. Anyway I am impressed with the 4x5 contact print although at the time the shadows bothered me. For a little info on the site see https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1307

This time I scanned the whole sheet (~5x7") and you can see where the emulsion "leaked" under the tape and if you look carefully see the tick marked I placed to mark out the negative. A bench protruded into the view that I was not aware of when I shot the negative but I am impressed with the size of the 4x5 contact print - not too shabby IMO. After all 4x5 would be half plate back in the day. This is a view of the oldest hospital at Camp Russell before the name was changed to Fort McDowell. This structure is located at the rock quarry where stone for buildings on the island (and Alcatraz) was quarried from. All of the images in this thread were taken with the 150mm Apo Sironar-S which folds-up with the camera. A fourth image was taken with a 90mm f4.5 Grandagon. All were contact printed as gold-toned salt prints. The 90mm, 150mm and 300mm Nikkor-M are the lenses that I usually pack for Bicycle touring and backpacking along with a Series 0 CF Gitzo. To my thinking the 4x5 contact print is a viable alternative to the 8x10.

^ nicely done. I like how the composition draws me in to the house and makes me wonder how life was back when this house was in good shape.

Thanks Kmallick and Chris. This is part of a farm that’s still working. There is a newer house and barn across the road, which I will try to photograph soon. The pictured structure seems to be used for obsolete equipment only, and is open to the elements.
