Nice image, Austin, but what is the squarish, slightly darker shape, between the back of the car and the trees on the left ?

Best,

Strangely enough, I have no idea! It's odd looking isn't it? It seems semi-translucent. Honestly, I don't even remember seeing it at the time I made this picture, though I must have. It's in my neighborhood so I'll have to swing by and check it out.

What year is the image from?

I don't think any car there is newer than 1967, as I don't see any side marker lights.

I had some bad times as passenger in a Corvair, the driver was not good at snow.

A football team slid up to us, hopped out and carried the Corvair back on the road. Then they were gone. The driver did it again...

The truck looks newer than '67. Maybe they specialize in 'classics'? It threw me as well.

Although I wouldn't put it past Austin to have a time machine in his bag!

My first thought was that Austin was going through his archives, but knowing him, he probably took it last week. Like it, have a nice Corvair shot myself.

As a matter of fact, I did take it last week, or technically, a couple of weeks ago. No offense to any of my seniors here (eh-hem), but my archives don't go as far back as these cars, as I myself was manufactured in 1970. :-)

I wish I could tell you the story on this dealership, but no one was around. It really did appear to be frozen in time.

Oh now I’m a senior, and my forman at work commented that it was nice to have an old timer on the job. Heck I was built in 1960, really didn’t think I was getting old but now I’m starting to wonder.

Anyway Austin, love the image and the fact that’s it so recent. Also having a Corvair it a nice bonus.

I love a mystery and feel a tad bad about possibly spoiling this one, but I do believe that is one very straight tree trunk. If you look at the photo closely and follow the line up, you can see the left side of the trunk appearing above the first branch crossing over from the tree to its left. Convoluted much?

At any rate, another wonderful picture from you Mr. Granger.

Bellingham WA is reclaiming a large waterfront site that used to be a paper mill. They're not sure what they'll do with it all, but they have stabilized a few industrial remnants as centerpieces for future developments. This is an acid tank, all rusty red but coated with some kind of a protective layer. It's a study in rivets. Shot in February on TriX with Wratten #25 and 90mm lens. Scanned from Ilford print.

This base of a former watertower in the woods has attracted me for several tries with different films and formats. This one is on 4x5 TriX with 90mm lens at only 9 ft distance. Depth of field suffers but I wanted to get a feeling of being inside the structure, if possible. On an overcast day I added a battery flash to liven up the nearest parts a little, dodging the plants at the bottom some too on the print.

Dave, I love interiors of old buildings such as the one you posted. Since you have it in PhotoShop already, you could try making the interior a little lighter, and burn down the hot highlights to balance. Then see if you like the revised tonal relationships. I had a somewhat similar indoor image, and an exhibit curator I trust suggested I do the same thing, which in the darkroom was a painful exercise (specifically burning the highlights without leaving a halo or dark ring) but the end improvement was worth it in my case.

Many thanks indeed for the kind comments: something of a thrill finally to be posting in this thread with 8x10!
Re. some more work in post on the contrast - I think I see the point, and have looked into this. On reflection one of the things that this exposure does is - partly because of the strong highlights and the relatively uncontrasty midtones - is suggest the sense of the flood of light into the scene. This exposure captures this somewhat better than my previous editing with the original 4x5 image of the same scene I shot last year with Delta 100. So I'm tempted to leave it as is if that's ok.

This is my first posting in many years here on the LF Forum. I used to have an 8x10 B&J Grover monorail, but sold it and had since then acquired a 4x5 tailboard and I have a 5x7 Kodak 2D on the way (should be arriving tomorrow). I plan to "re-engage" in my LF activities much more now.

Here's one of my last efforts with the 8x10 Grover, with a 305mm Carl Meyer Anastigmat, Arista.EDU 100 film in HC-110B. It's the Crown Farm in Gaithersburg Maryland a few years ago before it was taken down and developed into an expanse of townhouses, restaurants, and shops.

John,

The locality is called 'Jennings' I believe, in northern NSW very close to the New England Highway. This is not what we would think of as 'outback'. It is a rural farming kinda community thereabouts.

'Outback' is probably 1000km inland for what you are thinking. It is actually hard for me to specify 'outback'. I actually don't know what it is!! To me the rural landscape slowly becomes more and more desertified I guess as you move inland. The pastoral businesses get larger and larger because it is harder and harder to make a living from the land. Some people think Sydney is rural!!

Sorta like on the way to Death Valley I guess.

Sorry, that was a bad pun. In the U.S. one might refer to such a structure as an "outback." Someday I'll have to come explore and learn more about Australia.

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/nghs-3310ss.jpg

A friend from school mentioned the location of this truck. I was a member of the band from '00-'04 and have a lot of fond memories of loading this truck and going to perform at away games. My junior year there was a rough transition to a new band director, which was predicated on politics and personal vendettas. The new director seemed to want to distance himself from anything related to our previous director and achievements, and got rid of almost anything related to that, including this truck. I assume it was surplussed and auctioned off. Now it sits next to an abandoned old house for some reason.

Indeed. On a related note, the new director also put all of our trophies in lock-up storage. A friend of mine and I broke in and stole our biggest trophy, from when we won top prize at a regional competition. The trophy was 6 feet high, so we disassembled the whole thing and took it out in pieces in our backpacks over several trips. I still have it :).

I think folks buy these as portable storage units. The bottom of the rear panel was see-through, and so I looked in, but it was empty. There was a heavy-duty padlock on the door though.

Great photo of course, but what's interesting to me is how derelict it was after just 29 years. Now it's 80. Wonder also what's left.

I'm at the magic age where these numbers keep reminding me 50 years makes a huge difference. We see cars for sale that we wouldn't have walked across the street to look at . . . in 1968. All that water's under the bridge now. We laugh and call the rusty hulks "river bottom cars" and people want crazy prices.

LOL. Who knew you lived on the wild side. Nice image as well.

Thanks, Jim. I had the same thought, a very short life for that school. In fact, it had been abandoned a dozen or so years before I photographed it in 1968. The families of Claunch were mostly cattle ranchers, who moved on to more fertile lands in Texas. As to its present state, it appears from recent photos to look not that much different, albeit behind a barbed wire fence now.

Trying to be thoughtful and not political here, consider the tradeoff's. In America we have to have a business model where a capitalist can make a profit. When old things become more expensive and less productive we sweep them aside. It's all about the money. As problematic as that seems at first thought it has produced more wealth and more comfort than any competing system you can find. I love taking my warm shower at night and sleeping in my comfortable bed. But it's at the cost of charming older things with style that new things no longer possess. We can't help but be romantic about the beauty of the lost. My house is a junk collection of old things I've dragged home to preserve.

Here where I live, it's more that the owners passed away and either no heirs or the heirs don't want to pursue the lifestyle their parents led. There are many properties abandoned for other reasons like lack of employment, no one buys the home so it just gets abandoned. Many industries can't compete with a "global economy" so they are left to crumble. Sad narrative.

Sure looks like it could be. I should go do a photo. You figure it was a little over 40 years later that Reinhold did his photo, and now almost 40 more have come and gone. Love the Goldpoint sign. It's definitely the same. The gasoline pump in the 1940 photograph was bought by me from a guy in Tonopah who took it from Goldpoint. I restored it and it was in my back yard for many years, orange with a shell globe on top. Long before I'd seen the old picture or I would have gone with the Chevron colors and tried to faithfully restore it to the Goldpoint config. Now it's gone too. It's in a furniture store in Carson City.

Had no idea this park existed till Saturday. Was going shopping nearby with my dad and saw it on the map. Was a huge ordeal to get there as the main highway going to it was closed. But finally made it and the light was very nice, glinting through the fence and water bouncing off the wheel. I guess the wheel stays "locked" until actually in use, so I'd like to see it spinning another day perhaps.

Wow, kind of a dream shot. Good for you. OK, so people want to know, if the air was that still for a minute that the leaves are all perfect, what was the temperature that you endured with no breeze?

Corran
22-Jul-2019, 21:54
Thanks Jim. Leaves in the upper-left corner aren't particularly sharp - mostly due to a double-image effect as they were still for about 75% of the exposure, and then rustled for a second in a (small) breeze. Same with the leaves in the foreground on the building, but neither is particularly offensive IMO and this deserves a print I think, because of the light. Thinking about a square crop now actually.

Normally would be shooting T-Max 100 and not had such a long exposure but was finishing up a box of this Efke. I like it a lot, and have a few boxes of 25 and 100 in the freezer.

It was definitely hot, in the 90's. Summer is in full-force here in the deep south. I'm so used to it, it doesn't even faze me anymore.

You're hallucinating, Bryan--that's one of the first symptoms of hyperthermia.:)

At any rate, a very nice shot--I'm especially drawn to the graceful curve of the maple (?) in the foreground--and definitely one that will have me pondering aspect ratios. (FWIW, I think I'm disappointed you didn't have your 5x7 on the truck...it really seems to have the ability to "sort" a frame with a lot moving parts.)

BTW, if I-20 ever takes you through "Burminham," Tannehill state park west of town has a lot of interesting industrial architecture from the 19th C--and of course, Sloss Furnace in downtown Birmingham is fascinating in itself.

Well a week and a half ago I did hike 8 miles in the extreme heat with no water because I was being dumb / stubborn so I had some mild hyperthermia...

Thanks - yes I immediately was drawn to the curving tree as foreground element. I almost brought my 5x7, but I think this was the right aspect ratio. I did try to compose a second shot vertically but decided I didn't like it. I just got some new 5x7 film holders and made a new lens board so I need to take it out again soon.

I have seen images from Sloss Furnace, and definitely would love to go! I'll look up Tannehill too.

I just bought a Calumet wood field camera with Caltar II 210 mm lens. It seems to be early '80s vintage as it looks just like what's in my 1985 Calumet catalog. This test shot is from the historic Reubel Farm, which is now owned by the Nat'l Forest Serv. The day was heavily overcast and the wood was dark with weathering. As a test of the lens, bellows integrity and camera movements it was a good first try. TriX film, yellow filter, scanned from Ilford print.

Here are a few from my archive of old images. Big Don's dates to the mid 70's as does Mount Olive gas station and Get Right. All were shot with my early 1930's 8x10 Deardorff and the gas station and big Don's were shot with my triple convertible B&L Protar. Most likely I shot them on TX but would have to go back and pull negs to see.

Get Right was shot with a 19" RD Artat in the mid 70's as well and probably TX and HC110B.

The old cars were shot new years eve 1999. Again old Deardorff and think the lens was a 300 Symmar convertible but could have been a Dagor 12".

A POPULATED PLACE v.6 - Arlington, Arizona. An image from a long-term project I'm working on wherein I am photographing old farming communities in Arizona that never became incorporated cities/towns and are slowly decomposing. These by-passed places are most attractive to me. Wikipedia often refers to these small communities as a 'populated place' - thus the name of my project. I have enjoyed photographing this particular abandoned 100+ year old farmhouse numerous times. I wonder about the family that lived here and what their life was like? The main house has double-thick adobe walls that are slowly buckling under the weight of time, weather, and neglect. 4x5 Arca Swiss - 150mm Lens - Ilford FP4

8x10 neg taken in November 2015. In early December I drove by it to discover it was a flat pile of rubble, nothing left standing.
Turned out it was a reject negative, so I couldn't re-shoot it.

Nice. I am being relocated to Oklahoma City for work. Sucks for landscape photography. Anyone know of any place in OK worth photographing? I am going to be doing a lot of travel. At least once a month to CO, AZ, etc to photograph. 10 years from now I will retire and move home to AZ and retire somewhere in Flagstaff. But for now, I got a job, and the ability to go places to keep photographing. The other photographing/research I will be doing will be astrophotography/astronomy. Working towards 4x5 images of the heavens as well along with the digital stuff.

Don't be too quick to write off Oklahoma--it's got a lot of geological/ecological diversity, everything from exposed granite/sandstone in the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains, to a really neat section of the Ouachita's (e.g the San Bois Mountains.) Of course, further afield down in McCurtain Country in the extreme southeast corner, there are cypress swamps that wouldn't look out of place in Louisiana, and the Great Plains pretty much start a bit north of you. You're not going to find Monument Valley, of course, but if you go out with an open mind, you might find something worth pointing a camera at.:)

Austin you find a lot of iron, around here they recycled most ot it

I went looking for deep woods iron I saw 50 years ago and they got it all out, at that time big trees were growing through 1920's cars, that had been pushed downhill towards the Mississippi, but never got close to the floodplain

I do know of 2 barges...

Big trees growing through 1920's cars is something I'd seek out myself. As far as my old iron, I guess time moves slowly out here in the west, at least away from the cities. I'm told that the combine above is probably from the 40's-50's.

Heritage House, one of the earliest homesteads in Pflugerville, TX and now maintained by the Pflugerville library.

These are straight scans from 8x10 work prints on RC glossy. I've revised my processing a bit, recalibrating my development times and finding new "proper proof" times. A side benefit is that when I've metered correctly, I can make straight work prints from the negatives at a standardized 9 seconds, f16, G2 on my ZoneVI VC head, with no dodging, burning, etc. That means I can "gang process" (expose multiple negatives and process multiple sheets together in the developing tray) to get a set of 8x10s quickly, to see what the images look like. The ones I like I can then print properly on FB with whatever local burning and dodging is appropriate.

Hi, Peter. Interesting to see the two crops. It's not just that the formal composition changes; each has its merit. But they say different things. I actually prefer the more generous crop with the wider format; it seems to offer a little more to study in the foreground.

I think the challenge here is the split foreground with the channel into the background. While the formal elements balance, the lack of points of interest in the middle and background, except for the tower, hamper, in my view, the unity of the composition. I find myself looking from place to place in search. Of course, this is from a screen view of a work print. A good contact print, or modest enlargement, on FB could yield those rich, modulating tones -- for example, in the hose siding -- that sometimes make 8x10 such a tonal standout.

In printing, I think I would look towards a print that maintains the sense of light but places the lower values further down. You have plenty of exposure and detail there to play with.

Philip, thanks very much for your constructive thoughts, I will re-read them a few times before making the “real” FB 11x14s. Our weather forecast for tomorrow is rain, I may get started then. My only comment is that these are not crops, I made a horizontal and then vertical exposure from the same set-up, wasn’t sure which would work better. Thanks again.

The place makes for some great color work.

There is a so-called public cabin/hut in the mountains by a lake I have hiked to several times. It's on forest service land and has been there a long time. Over the years people have outfitted the place so you could stay the night there and not have to carry a lot of gear much like it looks in your pictures. People seem to respect the place and not tear it up from what I could tell. Except a couple of years ago it got all cleaned out by the Forest Service. Some rule was being violated so that ended that.

You'll have to excuse the quality, I don't have a proper film scanner (yet) and my darkroom/laundry room is flooded, but I think the grainyness actually looks kind of neat on this Russian T-34.

Shot on my 8x10 Cambo SCX, 360mm Nikon, Ilford FP4+, at the tank museum behind my house.

I love this image and the old grain elevator Chris. I especially like knowing about that old canal. I have a good friend who lived for a time in Schenectady, NY while working for GE. He tells me the old Erie Canal runs in that area. Great history.

Many thanks! The 47mm would be even wider. You could probably stand right next to the hedge and get the same content.

XTOL seems to be providing less grain and flatter photos (easier to scan), which suit architecture/landscapes better.

The Forgotten Mill, 2013

Chamonix 45n1, Nikkor 90mm f/8, Efke IR820 film, probably developed in Rodinal 1:100, printed on Ilford MGIV glossy fiber to 16x20 size and matted to 20x24

http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/DSC_5091ss.jpg

This photograph was shot in 2013 in the final stages of demolition of this cotton mill in south GA, built in 1899. I did an entire series / retrospective on the building as well as some of the people who worked there and had a large show along with a friend and fellow photographer after we collaborated for 2 years documenting this place. However, this piece didn't make it into the show - I just had too many negatives and this one was very different from all the others due to the IR film and so we cut it. I unearthed this and a number of other prints that were not used in a box of prints from when I was printing in the school darkroom back then, untouched since moving in 2016. So I matted it up because I think it is a cool print by itself.

I agree, Bryan. It's a strong image. I photographed an old paper mill a few years ago. I found out about it, went with my dslr, and took a bunch of pictures. I went back the next week with my LF gear, and it was completely demolished.

Corran

That's fast! They meticulously took this mill apart piece-by-piece and reclaimed most of the wood and brick (the railroad conveniently passed right by it, only a few hundred feet behind me in this photo). I believe that was the main money-maker for this project, as the owners tried to recoup some of the investment into the property (they wanted to save it, but purchased it around 2007...so you can guess how that went). In the basement the foundation was made from absolutely massive beams - such size that would be impossible to find in unprotected land today.

I bought a Schneider G-Claron in an enlarger mount and mounted into a Copal 3 yesterday and then had to measure out an aperture scale so I decided to take it to work with me at Didcot Railway Centre and test it in during my lunch break. Both taken on Ilford Delta 100 with Intrepid 8x10, both ended up being at f45 so more testing will show whether I got the other markings right too! The first is of our 1932 Coaling Stage which is still in its desired usage and the second of a wagon outside my workshop - The Lifting Shop, which houses our 50 ton hoist.
