Hah, hah, you guys. I was curious, so I googled "fish on a fence post" and discovered that this is not an unknown practice--the state of Texas seems to be mentioned often. Not sure why they do it there. In California, it's gotta be for art.
Bobbotron -- the sense of sharpness is more than anything is due to the bright sun and all the tiny detail in the carcasses. This was TMY. I have an FP4 negative of the same subject yet to develop. Will be interested to see the difference.

Bryan, I looked at your stone ruin images this morning on an iPhone.
Now on my good monitor. WOW!.. and I agree this light is really good. Great work.
I looked up your area, looks very interesting. Similar to parts of my area, but I am sure everything is lusher, snake-er and wetter by you. We have plenty of snakes.
40 years ago I rode my BMW motorbike from Philly, down Skyline Drive which connects at the top of the Blueridge Parkway and on to the end. I think I took 40 west home to my area. If I remember correctly there was scenic road connection at the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I figured i would get back someday...
So I almost made it to Georgia.
Thanks John. You're right, I don't want too much contrast (especially not dappled light). The sun almost came out for a minute and would've given some nice side light early in the morning, maybe. I was just feeling like maybe the light here is just a bit too drab - but maybe it fits the subject.
Edit: you sniped me Randy :). Thanks, maybe I'm being too critical. I will probably try contact printing the second image. Sometimes things are just different in silver, you know? There's a lot of interest in GA it's just not on the side of the road with huge signs pointing you there. The second image is actually at the back area of this park that is clearly less trafficked - we were happy to find it as we didn't realize it was such a sizable ruin.
I think I know the scenic road you are talking about - and it's a great road with connections to the Appalachian Trail and several scenic hikes and waterfalls. But they require 5-10 mile hikes to see sometimes. The adage "nothing worth photographing is far from your car" or whatever does not work in GA in my opinion!!!

Corran, You had great light compared to when I have visited. Morning light is usually too harsh and the stones very reflective or affected by the tree shadows. Late day the light comes from the right and usually causes some flare. A nice spring overcast day is my next planned trip there since the trees will have leaves then. The creek itself is interesting if you travel toward the Chattahoochee, but there is not really a good trail beyond the ruins. The other side of the bridge is a little known fly fishing spot.
Yeah I am interested in going again when it's a bit warmer. I saw some angles that might be nice in the creek. Today I am exploring far northwest GA (currently waiting on the gates to open at Lula Lake after driving out this morning at 6am :)).

I like the subtle colors, almost looks hand painted. I am not much into color photography these days but enjoyed your National Character series. I have been to some of those places or places like them. Well done.
Oh yes. Tripods are forbidden in all of Sicily's antiquities sites and they're red hot about it. This was supported on a chair back, the chair being sat on by the very helpful but unfortunately-being-watched-by-his-boss attendant. He was most sympathetic, but wouldn't let me put the tripod up.
That's why I have no photos from the Valley of the Temples; they wouldn't even allow the tripod in the area.

Thanks for the post and image. I am fond of Viking ships. I'm 1/2 Norweigan. Norway sailed a replica Gokstad to Chicago for the 1893 Worlds Fair. The replica is still here and has been poorly handled. It was under an open shed at Chicago Lincoln Park Zoo for a long time. I visited it often. I never got a satisfactory image. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/09/12/historic-chicago-viking-ship-may-finally-get-permanent-home/
What great ships they are!

Yes, the Gokstad is in another adjacent hall. I did not know you have a replica...
Sure, vikings carved their boats and wooden artifacts with incredible detail! Such contrast compared to their violent and rough reputation!

Norwegians here in the USA are still a bit rough. Many choose the wastelands of North Minnesota to farm. I come from there. My Norwegian grandfather wore out one wife with 9 children. She died. Grandfather went back to Norway, 1910 and got a fresh wife who bore my father. Not a nice guys, grandfather or father.
There is a very unusual Norwegian church I know in Chicago. All wood of course. The main floor is curved like a ship hull, with every pew tilted. Hard to walk on. I know it will burn sooner or later. It's the Chicago way...

Nice image, but HIE? How old was the film?
Yes, HIE and the film was fresh, in-date, I took this around 30 years ago. I wouldn't expect that a grease covered metal object in the shade would show much Wood Effect. I have a Tri-X negative taken at the same time and there are marked differences but not what you might expect, mainly grain, sharpness and shadow detail.
Or did you mean something else?

Hi Alan, good to hear from you.
Yes, it was in the abandoned coal mining town of Madrid. I read recently that a couple of hundred people live there now, and have fixed up some of the buildings. There is a photo of the houses on my wbsite, Portfolio #1.
Best,
Merg
In the mid 1990s I began shooting the many abandoned farm houses and town buildings scattered throughout the Northern Plains. I started with a Bronica ETRSi and quickly moved to a Cambo 4x5 monorail. A couple of years later I bought a Shen Hao, and later a Chamonix 045n. In the early 2000's I switched to shooting a lot of railroad stuff. This year I've sort of gone back to my roots. I've been prowling the section roads of the Dakotas and checking out long abandoned buildings, and taking shots with the Chamonix. My most used lenses are a c.1920 Dagor 4 in., c.1922 Heliar 150mm, and c.1912 dagor 240mm (in very early Compound!) I sometimes will use a pre-Civil War (1850s) Petzval. My film of choice is FP4+. Anyway, I'm having fun! I like poking around in these slowly decaying structures--never know what I'm going to find. I just have to be careful I don't fall through the floor. Some recent shots:

Alan, Madrid is a town that my beautiful bride has loved since I first took her to the Southwest 1996. Whenever we go to Santa Fe we take The Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque and stop and eat at the Mineshaft Bar & Grill. We were there when they were filming the movie Wild Hogs that you referred to.

Thanks, Bryan. That's kind of you to say. DS-10 isn't as fine-grained as Xtol, although it's a bit sharper. I use it mainly because I have all of the chemicals, and it's a decent all-around developer.

Some very good images here. Shame we can't see them in print. Here is a different version of the Courthouse in Prescott, AZ Somewhat loner exposure, still red #25A, 75mm lens. Worked quite a bit to get rid of the distracting elements, trash cans, some building lights signs on doors and guard rails. The actual adjustments in PS were a round trip thru ACR to straighten image and then a mild curves adjustment and a high pass filter. I did some minor dodging and burning using light masks. Wanted to bring out some detail and contrast, but not be obvious about it. Compare to previous image. I find this one to be much better. I didn't like the in your face contrast and graininess of the first one.

I really like this, what film and developer were you using?
I've been continuing with my volunteer work on behalf of the Preservation League of NYS, to photograph their current Seven to Save list, the seven most-threatened historic properties in the state. The current list includes a couple of categories of buildings, including what are known as the Wells Barns. John T. Wells patented a truss system for barns in the 1880s that used tall pointed laminated arches to create wide-open interiors; in a break from traditional post and beam construction, Wells' system allowed farmers to drive their wagons directly into, and maneuver around in, the barns. The interiors really are amazing things to behold, and I had a hoot photographing a few of them the other week. Wells and his son built more than 200 of them throughout the state from the late 1880s until 1940, but fewer than 50 remain. Here's a sample, a small-ish jpg from a quick flatbed reference scan.

I really like this, what film and developer were you using?
I used Tmax 100, I do not know what developer as I sent this one out. I have another one I took that day with Tmax 100 and used Tmax Developer at 1:4 after washing the film till the water ran clear. I will try to get it processed and posted up this week.

Decaying barn of yesteryear. Taken with 4x5 Chamonix 45H-1, Nikkor 75mm at f/32 (could have been f/22, don't have my notes with me) using Tmax100, red 25A filter and processed in Tmax Developer at 1:4. Scanned in with Epson V850 at 3900dpi and cropped to 2.54 aspect ratio.
Resizing this down from full resolution and size which would be 208 inches long x 81 inches wide at 300 dpi or 17.333 ft 6.75 ft just doesn't do this justice. Even at 6 foot x 2.4 foot at 300dpi would be good since I don't have a wall that is really big enough to hang it on, will settle for a 6 foot version. Although, currently I can only print a 5 x 2 foot print.

Thanks, Steve! These Wells Barns are incredible buildings. I generally enjoy more off-center interior views, but in this case, the single-point perspective was the way to go. It was a treat being in these barns.

Cross-posting this. The original bathroom at the first campground in Zion National Park. It is the first and/or second Zion National Park building to be built (1923). I spent a month living it its sister building, the ranger station (which became the Park museum...now housing for visiting artists, researchers, and so on.) The walls are blocks of local sandstone 18" to 24" thick -- note the thicker blocks used in the corners. Angel's Landing in the background.
11x14 negative photographed on a light table, then inverted in PhotoShop. Eventually a platinum print perhaps.

Redo of the Broke Ass Barn in Palouse. The original was too "gray" over the entire image. I still need to do this one again from the conversion of negative to finished product, but this is more to my liking, with more black to white gradations and contrast. Comments welcome on comparison of this to earlier version posted earlier.

Bristolcone Pine - Colorado Plateau.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/849/41866304060_6db1e86d5f_z.jpg
I stumbled across this grove in the Colorado Plateau during a road trip in the area several years back and at the time thought that they were Bristolcone Pines. They were well cared for and in a protected area, an observatory IIRC, but no one was present to ask so I carefully walked among the grove of 10 or 20 trees and photographed a few. They proved to be difficult subjects to compose.

Thank you. This one was a really hard one to get it this far. My exposure was good, scanned it good, but it was really flat at the beginning. Most likely cause it was about noon when I took this and this frame had no filters to increase contrast and no lens hood either.

Was experimenting with it to see if I could get more contrast between the rusted hopper and its surroundings. It seemed to work. Although, I could have done without as well.

I believe this is called Twin Towers:
https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1864/44603281671_245b8e94ce.jpg
Constructed by ancestral Puebloans, a sedentary farming culture that occupied the Four Corners area from about A.D. 500 to A.D. 1300, this structure is thought to have been built around 1200 A.D. and is located in Hovenweep National Monument. Hovenweep is a Paiute/Ute word meaning "Deserted Valley" which was adopted by pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson in 1874. In 1917-18, J.W. Fewkes of the Smithsonian Institution surveyed the area and recommended the structures be protected. On March 2, 1923, President Warren G. Harding proclaimed Hovenweep a unit of the National Park System.

Huntingdon's Atalaya Castle, Huntingdon Beach State Park, South Carolina. Archer Huntingdon, billionaire heir of the builder of the first transcontinental railroad, built "Atalaya" as a winter home for his wife in the early 1930s. It is supposed to resemble a Spanish hacienda with an enclosed courtyard, and was subsequently deeded to South Carolina as part of the State Park. It is something of a stabilized ruin, in that the brick structure is fine, but all the plastering and paint, along with any interior furnishings, are long gone. The best part is that admission is $2 and there are no restrictions on the use of tripods and cameras so long as you don't block access by others.
These are scans from work prints on RC paper, with minimal adjustments. While I enjoy the images for their memories, the lighting was so dull and flat that I doubt I will ever print these seriously. But would be a great site to visit in better weather (not my on and off vacation drizzle) but not during Myrtle Beach's high tourist season. Incidentally the beach, which is maybe a 10 minute walk, is spectacular. HP5+, Pyrocat, 180/6.3 lens.

Peter, these are both interesting, and since you have invited comment, let me make a suggestion regarding Atalaya3. I would crop in on the right side and eliminate the distant background; also, a slight crop top and bottom of equal amounts leaving a slice of sky. The light is not a problem, and works well. In short, a tighter crop would strengthen the image overall. I like it. Also, the window on the right, with the play of light on the bricks, is fascinating as a stand-alone composition; severly cropped, or better yet, taken with a longer lens on your next visit. Thanks for sharing, these caught my eye.

Merg, Thanks so much for your suggestions. I don't know how to say this without sounding "over the top," but I'm honored that you made suggestions. I will try them out in PhotoShip later today (or right after Thanksgiving if my wife gives me a to-do list getting ready for relatives) and post the "Merg Ross Version." Maybe I will end up printing one or both of the images in the darkroom after all.

Have you considered cropping the image horizontally just below the door frame? At this level you have marvelous visual tension coming from each side that provides the proper support for what is above it - which is where the marvel of this image resides. Well seen and well executed.

First, the crop as suggested (at least my interpretation):

And a second, tighter crop concentrating more on the two windows:

And again, thanks, Merg, for your suggestions, and any other comments on either the originals or the crops appreciated.

Michael: Yes, I made a lot of exposures of the building with a few different formats, films and cropping, and you are right, the lower section doesn't really belong (or at least doesn't add much) in this black and white version, in color it's a different story. Below is one version from the same negative.
I had considered this a work in progress, I made the 140 mile each way trip a dozen or so times (five times in two weeks at one point!) from about 1988 until 1993, when I turned the corner to where I should have seen the building and it was gone, burnered to the ground. I felt like there was something more to capture there, at least I was willing to try.

Fortunately it sounds as though you have a number of quality negatives to remember this magnificent structure with. Many times the liability insurance for structural failure falls upon a local landowner as the business enterprise is long sense gone. The owners have to deal with this risk the best way they can and it can be a real challenge. Sometimes the wood gets repurposed which takes many fine not at risk structures out of play and sometimes someone steps up and brings the structures back to life. Other times they go up in smoke. Outside of FairPlay, Colorado up Nine Mile Creek I saw a family in the process of rebuilding a delapidated mine frame and side building and bringing it back to life but that is a rare thing these days. Enjoyed the image!

Merg, Thanks again for taking an interest. Unfortunately I still find the lighting too flat and dull for me to be satisfied with the image, regardless of cropping; the weather was uncooperative. I would love to go back, but it is either an 11-hour drive from home, or a fairly expensive flight. However, on to the crops. I actually prefer either the original, or the closest crop. The view is from the exterior back of the structure, I don't think most tourists go back there. What attracted me were the forms, the cylindrical portion (left of image) and the rectangular section (right of image). For me, including the sections you suggested cropping gives a better sense of the volumes. Alternatively, the closest crop accentuates the forms of the windows; the metalwork was designed by Anna Hyatt Huntingdon, who besides being married to the billionaire who built Atalaya for her, was a famous sculptor at the time. I resisted taking a picture of a single window because that image has been made by others, and I try not to duplicate. I think looking at the various croppings was a good exercise, because it made me think about the "why I made the image I did" in more detail, since my original process is more intuitive, simply looking at the ground glass and trying various angles and distances before exposing the sheet.

Abandoned gas station along I-10 in California, west of the AZ border. Shot with Tmax100, 75mm Nikkor, f/4.5@f/16 (should have used like f/32), Chamonix 45H-1, Red25A and polarizer. I seriously underexposed this shot, by like 2 stops for sure. The negative was so thin it didn't really look like it had anything on it. Scanned with Epson V850, Vuescan, rgb brightness to .8 (scanned as 48bitrgb slide and output as 48bitrgb at 6000dpi) I used swing, but I missed it I think (depth of field was too shallow at f/16) I contrastwise bleached this negative then developed in 2-bath pyrocat. Since I didn't think there was much to this negative, I didn't bother using a clean optical mylar when I wet mounted it. Had plenty of scratches to remove and a lot of pinholes or something. Also some swirl marks and such (use sp445 and haven't had much luck lately with that thing) The sign is overexposed, but that is most likely from when I converted it. Not a wallhanger, but it shows there is potential for returning to this area once I get my developing technique refined. Scanned at 6000dpi. I like the detail, but not sure I like the grain detail as well in the sky. I may return to 4200 or 4500dpi as zero in on my final scan dpi.
Anyway, thought I would post up as it works to bleach and use pyrocat. Does it buy anything? Who knows? Definitely need to purchase a centerspot for this 75mm Nikkor, the vignetting really is apparent in a lot of the shots I take, like this one.

A wee confusion. Plastigmat was a trade name of Bausch & Lomb and the lenses were of their own proprietary design. So nothing to do with Zeiss, in fact they were a cheaper lens to circumvent paying the license fees to Zeiss which they had to do with the similar but better Protar. Plastigmat was always two identical opposing symmetrical elements and while B&L claimed them to be 'convertible' they were poor when used alone. More like a Dagor than a Protar. Anyways, very cool photo. I would enjoy visiting those ghosts myself.
