Greetings:
Winter is my favorite time of the year and I love winter photos.
So I'm starting this thread hoping others will show some of their favorites.
This one in my town center at midnight during our Dec 26-27 storm. Snow was flying fiercely and I used my body to block the wind against my Tachihara.
Resulting sharpness was quite a surprise.

Thanks Nate. Given the heavy wind and blowing snow I really didn't expect it to come out.
When I left the house at 11 PM there was a lull in the storm that I had been waiting for all day. But the snow drifts were deep and the usually 15-minute walk took more than half an hour. And by the time I set up the conditions had changed and the snow was blowing again.
But given all the effort I shot 8-sheets of various film anyway... 4 each in two different locations.
The previous image f8 @ 15-sec on outdated 4x5-inch PRT that I bought from a member here last month.
The one attached in this post the same exposure on RDP II.
All taken with a 135-mm SA that I also bought from another member here.
And I was pleasantly surprised when the film came back from the lab. Both are keepers.
Cheers. Bob G.

Hey Jeffrey - nice winter image. Even looks familiar? Can't figure out why though ;)
I think Yosemite after a winter snow storm defines the term "winter wonderland." This is from Jan 2010. Backdrop is of course El Capitan.

Bob,
The image was taken using Velvia 50. I ended up over exposing by about 1/3 of a stop, but surprisingly, the film actually held the detail in the snow well enough. Also, it's an evening image. The hike up to the vantage point nearly killed me. It was an 800 foot climb in elevation through 18 inches of snow and underbrush. Thank goodness I gave myself plenty of time to get up there.

Here's a couple from the Grand Canyon to compliment Jim Becia's fine image.
Stormy sunrise at the canyon. Almost missed this one while drinking coffee in the Yavapai Lodge parking lot. The storm was heavy enough to mentally write off making a photograph, then the OMG moment, running to the car, grabbing the 4x5 and setting up the shot. All in about 3 minutes.

I foolishly crossed a barb wire fence to get this shot. As I was just about to snap the shutter, I looked to the left and saw an enormous bull about 50 yards away, glaring at me and swinging his tail.
"Sorry, bud - I'm outta here!" I got the shot and got away in one piece, whew! :p

I like it a lot. Thank you for shareing it.

23-Jan-2011, 06:13
Dear David,
The foreground trees along the river's edge happen to be covered in "Hoar Frost" ... :)
Excuse me if you already know this fact, but this effect occurs when moist warm air comes in contact with any bitterly cold body, causing long needle like ice crystal formations to rise and grow on the surface of the cold body instantly. The warmer flowing Vermillion River provided the source of the moisture, and the dense cold air mass during the stillness of the night more than likely caused a moist fog to rise off the river, which enveloped the trees along the river's edge, generating the effect you see in the image. The hoar frost can remain for a day or several hours, where the frost can be dispersed quickly by a brisk wind, or warmer daytime temperatures. The middle trees lost their snow cover days before, and my log book indicates that the daytime temperature happened to be minus twenty-eight degrees Celsius.
I got lucky with the view that day...
The mountain range in the background is named Hawk Ridge, just before the range runs into the Mitchell Range along Highway 93 South within the boundaries of Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada.

Nicely done, Austin and Maris!
I could see snow in the mountains to the east this morning, but it rarely gets here at 80 feet elevation. Here is an old 4x5 negative enlarged to 16x20. Almost stepped on this fellow walking around half-snow blind in the Mono Lake Basin (above the lake a ways on the northern side). Used my 150mm/5.6 lens, probably unfiltered TMax100 in HC-110, but I'd have to look that up to be sure. Ilford Gallerie grade 3 paper.

Prairie Flat, Southern Alberta, I've climbed that mountain 3 times and it take about 2 hours, I should lug the 4x5 up there one day. Portra 400, 4x5 150mm. Not sure about this one since i'm learning home c41 development. This location is an hour fifteen away from my house and I love to go for winter weekend drives there.

Thanks. I was lucky that anything was in focus at all. It was an unpleasant photo to take- dark, cramped, and I could only focus for 2-3 seconds at a time before the ground glass fogged over. Now I just stay inside.

Oh dang. Looks like a New England winter. I had a friend that grew up in Martha's Vineyard in the 80's. Back then she said there was barely anyone living there full time. The winters were brutal. She joked saying there was like 200 people on the island in the winter time.

Today I have golden hour from 8:21 to 15:18. The sun never rises high enough for golden hour to end. That is not so bad! The problem is the constant overcast weather...

No. I left Chicago 3 years ago and moved 400 miles south
Here it seldom snows, ice is more common
I stay home and sit out any adverse weather, 2" rain soon...been 60's for days
First year a tornado hopped right over my house without a basement...I reinforced the Darkroom! aka NE bedroom
I was born and raised Minnesota, I have seen plenty of snow, first year in Chicago was the 1967 Blizzard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Chicago_blizzard).I thought it was normal. 1979 was fun also.
Here is my last Chicago snow, view from my front door. 5X7 film

Nice image, mine of my Grand Canyon Christmas will come once I can process them after I settle in at my new place, in the ass end of hell, OKC. There is absolutely nothing there worth photobgraphing after growing up in AZ and now I am wishing I had not been so tied to work and worried about every minute. But at least I still have my job.
A couple from a few years back, I need to get out again.

But I shot this last time there was some snow, on Portra 160VC. I liked the crisp feel of these colors. IIRC, with my Chamonix and 90mm f/8:

And with the 7.25" Verito. I like the velvety softness, but was not sufficiently mindful of the dark branches in the foreground which were totally out of focus with the AE. Soft focus brings bigger depth of field. SF also does nice things with the light filtering through the treetops.
