Whether you’re a Newbie or an Old Timer to LF, this is a great opportunity to participate in a unique print exchange. You'll receive beautiful prints and have your work published in the online LF Gallery. This will be the fourth exchange I will sponsor and the previous Print Exchanges have been very successful and rewarding. The rules are posted below and have changed from last year, so please read through them. Please respond with your request to participate so we can start counting how many participants there will be. Please post all questions here so everyone can share the info.

Print Exchange 101
He is an example of a print exchange with 10 photographers.

Diane
Mathew
Dorothea
William
Margaret
Walker
André
Roger
Tina

Ansel, Diane, Mathew, Dorothea, William, Margaret, Walker, André, Roger, and Tina mail nine (9) prints according to the print specs to their print exchange facilitator. The facilitator then sorts out these prints so they each group member receives one print from each member of the group. Everyone receives nine (9) prints, one print from each of their group members.

There is monetary cost involved in this Print Exchange:

1. You will need to print nine (9) prints
2. You will need to ship these prints to Tallahassee, Florida USA
3. You will need to pay (PayPal or check) for the return shipping*

*Shipping fees will be determined after the prints are ready to be shipped. You will be notified via a PM. In previous exchanges, the packages averaged a 1-lb shipping weight. We do not want to exceed the 1-lb weight as International Shipping Fees are costly! There will be US, Canadian, European, Australian, etc. mailings. DO NOT MOUNT YOUR PRINTS!

Please note that I will not have an exact idea on your return shipping costs until I have your address and print packet ready for shipping. This all takes a bit of time and cooperation. Please be sure to send your "Shipping Info Sheet" along with your prints. If I do not receive a clearly filled-out "Shipping Info Sheet," I may have no clue whom the prints belong to.

Groups will be determined by the FIFO method:
We use the FIFO (first-in, first-out) method when assigning which participant goes into which group. I will post the shipping date below and everyone is to ship their prints by this time. Shipping before the established date is fine to do, but, in the past if you shipped your prints late, you left others in your assigned group waiting and waiting for their packets. Not anymore! Why penalize the participants that have been cooperating all along?

When I receive 10 packets in, I will ship 10 packets out!
I will list the names of each 10 member Group as the packets ship out so you know when to expect your packet. If stuff happens and you are unable to ship your prints on time, your prints will be placed in a group and shipped out when the group reaches 10 participants. If you are the last to ship your prints and there is no one else left to exchange your prints with, I will exchange one of my prints with you and look for others to contribute, but I cannot guarantee a full 10 print packet. I do believe this will be a fair and efficient system. This type of system may motivate some participants to get their packets out ASAP. Hey, whatever works!

Print Packets
Everyone is to ship nine (9) prints to me according to the Print Specs below. If you send 10 prints, I will assume you are sending one for me which is greatly appreciated and the reason I do all the work, but you are not obligated to do so.

PRINT SPECS
Must be created on a VIEW CAMERA (film or digital)
Black & White or Color
Wet darkroom or digital prints
NOT larger than 11x14" paper
NOT smaller than 8x10" paper
Image area can be any size as long as it is on paper from 8x10" to 11x14"
NO Mats due to added shipping weight
NO Mounted prints due to added shipping weight
Include an info sheet for each photo on your tech specs, location, etc.
Filters/Digital Manipulation OK
2010/2011 creation date

In the past a few folks shipped additional shipping materials along with their prints for the return prints shipment. If you care to do this, that is fine, but I will not recycle the outside envelope. I will recycle the cardboard if it arrives in good shape. I will not supply cardboard or shipping materials for free. To anyone that is in need of shipping materials, I can offer for an additional US $4.00 the following return shipping packet or similar.

I have a mail order business and purchase these materials in bulk. It would include a heavy cardboard mailer, two acid-free and pH neutral backing boards, and an archival bag that you can safely store the prints in for years to come. You are under no obligation to purchase this shipping packet, and if you do not, remember to include fresh shipping materials in your packet for the return shipment. I do not make any money off of these shipping materials; I offer this because it makes my job easier. It may actually save you postage if you do not mail shipping materials to me with your prints.

An attachment containing a photo of a shipping packet is enclosed at the end of this post.

If you are going to participate, post your name here and I will respond with acknowledgment and add you to the list and we EXPECT you to participate. If something comes up and you need to withdrawal, please notify me so I do not waste time trying to contact you. I will respond to questions as soon as I can and will check into this forum at least twice during the day looking for messages.

If you do not have a print already chosen for this exchange, use this opportunity to cultivate your creativity. I will be producing a print exclusively for this exchange and I cannot wait to get going! I have had a busy year and have not had the leisure to be behind my view camera as much as I would like. Now I have to because I want to exchange prints with you guys! Thanks for the motivation!!

Print Info Sheet, Shipping Info Sheet, Print Specs & Web Gallery Info
Include a Completed Print Info Sheet for each exchange print and clearly fill out your Shipping Info Sheet for me. I have difficulties with non-US addresses, so please type out your shipping info if you can! Thank you in advance.

Wow, that's some list. I did this a couple of years ago and the prints I got back were great, the effort to make this happen is much appreciated Darr.
For me, and I suspect most folks on here, the print is the work embodied. I look forward to getting some great work.

The first year I participated I waited anxiously for the packet of prints and was very happy to see what I got. The family gathered around and we all looked at them together. The next year the package was opened by the time I got home from work and prints were scattered all over the dining room table while a community dinner was being cooked in the kitchen. Yes, the arrival of the prints has become a family event! :)

Yeah I did that last year. In my haste I never considered the fact that Darr was in my group, so she got two of the same prints. Darr politely returned one of them and I sent her a different one in return.

Now is the time to *** start printing or start shooting *** your Print Exchange work.
Please post in this thread when you have shipped your packet so I can be on the lookout.

I will be posting arrivals in the Print Exchange Print Arrivals List as they come in.
When 10 participant packets have arrived, this will complete our first group, Group #1, and I will ship them out soon after the group has been posted.

Wow, I'd have loved to get in on this, but couldn't have even if I'd seen it in time. As I explained in my intro post, I've been out of the darkroom for some ten years, and now an art loving girlfriend has got me all motivated to get back. But, sadly, while I've retrieved my darkroom gear from my parent's basement (where I built my old darkroom when I lived in an apartment without the room) I don't have it set up here yet.

Heck, once I do, over the coming year I'll pick something I like and have ten prints ready to go for next year!

Just wanted to drop a note that I think this is a great idea!

That's not the half of it. One of my other interests is flying (see avatar.) Aside from not being afraid "of those little airplanes" the first time we went up and flew around the lake and back no sooner had we taxiied in than her next words were, "When are we going again? We ARE going again, aren't we??" She's also encouraging me to buy an airplane, or a share of one (pilots often partner to own a plane) as soon as I can. That's all my pilot friends have to hear to say "she's a keeper!" I agree. ;)

Sorry for the digression, but she'd love this idea too. Her "expensive hobby" is buying art, not necessarily expensive things (as art goes) but things she likes, things done by artist friends etc. (I can't say anything - I'll encourage it, within reason! Thought I already don't think I have room to hang or display it all...) Getting nine prints from other folks met online would be something she'd find as ubber-cool as we do, maybe more so.

Mine may be a while yet. I am planning on sending carbon prints on watercolour paper and it takes a while to get it all done. If I can get 10 consistent prints, then I must have a handle on the process. Which is why I am doing this.

I'm sending my prints today. I'm excited because I have never participated in anything like this before. In fact nobody but my wife and a few friends have even seen my photos. I seem to shoot, process, print, then put them in a box in the darkroom.

Quick curiosity question...

For those of you printing in a darkroom and sending prints for the exchange...Do you usually send FB or RC prints?

I usually print FB, double weight - I am used to mounting everything, so sending unmounted has me a little concerned with print flatness...

In the past I have sent RC prints. This year my prints are fiber-based, medium weight silver. The curl is a bit of a problem, but they flatten out when you put cardboard around them and tape it down.

I like some of the detailed stories that came with some of them. I hope to participate again another time and will have to up my game a little bit and provide more details too.

Ken when you posted they had been in Atlanta, that told me they were probably going to get here today since Tallahassee is about 4.5 hours south of Atlanta by delivery truck. DHL does good service. :)

I will not be able to participate as I intended and I sincerely apologise for that. I made my prints some time ago but was not happy with them. I gave them away to the usual suspects. Since then I have been in QTR purgatory, only today am I getting it right, but now I do not have enough tissue left to make 10 prints, so thats me done.

If this exchange is going to drag on for some time I could get there, but if not then I prefer not to disappoint. I could pour tomorrow and print fast enough to have them away Monday, with 7-10 days in transit.

Ok, I have another plan. I think I can have them away Thursday if that can work for you. I have some tissue somewhere and will print 2 at a time.

Got mine in the mail today, would have been sooner but (key the violins) I broke my ankle(surgery, screws, plates) and was only able to get into the darkroom this week for the first time since January. I am still not able to carry the camera around but hopefully soon.

Also is there a specific shipping label you want me to use.... or just a label that will stick on a package.

Final question. Once you have the return prints boxed up, you find the postage price and email it to me. Then I send the money by paypal.... do I have it right?

Also is there a specific shipping label you want me to use.... or just a label that will stick on a package.

Final question. Once you have the return prints boxed up, you find the postage price and email it to me. Then I send the money by paypal.... do I have it right?

Adam, the VDB print of the car is perfect for the subject matter. Love the tone! Thanks for taking the effort to make so many hand coated prints for us. What paper is it on?

Daniel, love the ballet going on with the seed pod, it's fantastic I think.

Ken, Excellent comp imo, the featureless sky makes the tree really stand out. That is one sharp shot! Well done.

Michael, I'm still chuckling and the giant "egg head" reminds me of a B horror movie with screaming teens:)

The paper is Lanaquarelle, it's the best I've found for my VDB process. I'm glad you enjoy the print.

I really love yours, what a great location - and the detail is awesome! I gotta say; before this exchange, I'd never held a print from an 8x10 camera. I can feel the GAS coming on just looking at these (don't tell my wife ;) ).

Oh, I'm not whining - I'm used to slow mail service from the US, especially for small packet stuff. Packages can get stuck in Customs for as long as two weeks. When I really need something delivered in a hurry, I use UPS Worldwide Express. It's a bit pricey, but since they self-clear the packages, they get here in a hurry....generally before 10am the next day, from any major centers in the US.

It also depends on what entry point the package goes to - packages cleared through Vancouver are notoriously slow; whereas packages cleared through Ontario tend to clear much quicker. It probably comes down to staffing levels more than anything.

If you can get your prints out by Monday or Tuesday (4/18-4/19), then yes, please participate. I have had a few photographers drop-out due to circumstances out of their control--hey life happens! So I could certainly fill the empty space!!

Please read the first post for all the instructions. PM me with any other questions and please post in this thread when you have shipped your prints.

I am so sorry for your situation Scott. I went through a divorce after 23 years of marriage in 2007, but the ex and I were kind to each other. Select Priority Mail International, and my zip code is 32317. The extras besides postage is $4.00 for shipping packet and any PayPal fees. I use the calculator at http://www.rolbe.com/paypal.htm to determine the PayPal fees.

Thank you all in Group #4 for a great variety of quality photographs and thank you Darr for all the work you have put into this exchange, fantastic arrangement this year too!

The great thing with this exchange is to get a small glimpse of other peoples portfolios, working methods and equipment used. When looking into participants' webpages the exchanged photographs also get put into a context adding even more value to the experience.

PS. I do not think that anyone need to do better next time...apart from myself ofcourse.
