Tri Tran & Jim Fitzgerald are proud to announce a special one day exhibit and discussion of Platinum and Carbon Transfer printing. The event will be held in Little Saigon at the Nguoi Viet Daily News on January 30, 2011 from 11 am to 5 pm. We decided to present our journey through time and answer questions, inspire fellow photographers and give people a chance to see unique prints from these two historic processes.
Included in the exhibit will be historic cameras and lenses. Cameras will include: 8x10, 11x14, 8x20, 12x20 and 20x24. Restored classics and custom built cameras from today will be on display. Tri will have several collector lenses on display including the one of a kind Cooke 27" Portrait lens, 16", 18" and 25" Petzval Lenses along with a Century 8A 11x14 Studio Camera and stand.
We will have carbon tissue for people to see, some negatives will be on display and there will be the final prints, upwards of 50 images, all without glazing to detract from the beauty of the images. Tri and I will be available to answer your questions. If you have ever wondered about Platinum Printing, Carbon Transfer Printing, camera building, historic processes and historic lenses please come join us for a wonderful informative and cultural exhibition in Little Saigon.
We expect this event to be very well attended so come early and stay late.

I just thought I would remind everyone of a very nice event this Sunday in Westminster, Ca. Tri Tran and I will have a lot of camera gear to look at and about 60 images, Platinum and Carbon Transfer to see. This will be a great time to see a lot of interesting images and gear.
Jim
Hello!
Jim, I am driving to SF on Thursday to be at an photo show opening of a friend of mine, then she and I are going to camp a couple nights up the coast (Salt Point area) and I'll take her back to the SF airport on Sunday. Don't know when her flight is yet. So if it is an early flight there is the possibility I could be at the "Journey Through Time" in time to at least say hello. Has to be an early flight as Google maps says it is a 7 hour drive (assuming the best).

The “Journey Through Time” Exhibition was a big success. My special thanks to Mr Linh Nguyen and the reporters team from Nguoi Viet daily news , the love and the support by the family and friends. Thanks also to Matt for his artistic help with the display and for taking pictures for the event. Least but not last, a big thanks to my friend Jim who joined me with the exhibition. Your contribution was valuable in our effort to introduce and the most beautiful process and images to the Vietnamese community in Little Saigon.
The turn out was great. People were very impressed not only with the displayed images but also with a 100 years old camera and lenses are still being used by the artists in the digital world. The massive size of the negatives and contact prints really inspired people.
Here are some pictures taken from a friend. Thanks Errol for the wonderful documentation.

Tri, love the close up of the Cooke! I agree great show! Thanks for making me a part of it. The turn out was great and we all had a great time.
Can't think why you would allow your work to be overshadowed by all that brass.

David it wasn't. We both received many nice compliments on our work. Many people who were not familiar with film photography came and were amazed that we could produce such imagery with these old cameras. It was an educational exhibition and I feel we accomplished our goal. I must say the room was just the right size for the work we showed.
Thats ok. All I have seen are the pictures in the thread.

This looks like a great exhibiiton and I am so sorry I had to miss it (due to work, again...)...but I have a question.
In the second to last photograph above, some prints on the left are mounted in frames, but it looks like without glass. I'm guessing these are carbons mounted this way to show off the relief...? How are these mounted to the mount board? Hinged with linen tape?
I didn't realize what a large exhibit this was, it is just an amzing accomplishment for the two of you. Tri, I look forward to meeting you someday soon...and also to Jim, it's always a pleasure to share your wonderful company. Bravo!

Paul, thanks for the nice compliment. Tri, yes I'm famous in the Vietnamese community?? Right!! It was fun giving my speech on TV! I can't remember what I said but it was fun. This was a large exhibit, Paul. Tri and I had over 60 prints on display. All of the prints were without glazing to detract from the images. Tris Platinum prints are stunning and I wish more forum members would have joined us for this great exhibit.
Tri, will have to answer how his Platinum prints are mounted because it is his work in the second to the last image. I use corner mounts for my carbon work.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the nice words. I prefer float mount for my platinum prints. The print was hinged, mounted from the back with white artist tape on a rag mount board. I leave the bottom print open freely so viewers can touch the paper as they wish. The top is mounted with a 6 ply window board and I left about a ˝ in. all around according to the brush mark or the rod mark. All prints have no glass.
Thanks again and I’m looking forward to meeting you someday

Mike, thanks. The 14x17 is the nicest one yet. Thanks again for the nice comments on my latest camera build. You can take a closer look at the finished camera at Joshua Tree at the end of the month.
Hey Jim and Tri!
Sorry I missed the fun! Just got home today.
Joshua Tree was great -- but below freezing the first day (2/4/11). High winds the first night but it calmed down. Death Valley was warmer -- but cool at the higher elevations. Alabama Hills was also fairly cold. Winds the whole trip, but with periods of quieter times. Enjoy your desert time, Jim!

Hello Jim,
Do you want to sell your beautiful 14x17 or do you know any others for sale?
Thanks,

Nick, no way! If I were to buy one I would buy a Chamonix. Contact Hugo Zhang here on this forum as he represents Chamonix in the states. Ever since I saw my Friend Tri carrying his 14x17 Chamonix over his shoulder in El Capitan meadow I said if I ever had the money to buy a 14x17 I'd buy a Chamonix. Good luck.
