Negative scan. Ilford HP5+ at ISO 1600. Taken with a Crown Graphic, Xenar 1:4,7/135. Developed in Adonal 1+50 for 25 minutes. Unintentionally underexposed.. this was a quick mutual portrait we both did as we parted from meeting for coffee. Fabien shoots street portraits with his Mamiya 7.

Diva Grotesque
After she untied her hair, my jaw dropped...

Imagon 300/4

Stunning, both here and in the meniscus thread with the magnifying glass. Why the word grotesque though? That doesn't seem to fit well in english. Does it mean something else in your land? She looks anything but grotesque. In this with the 300 the head looms a bit though. Like it's too big for the doll body?

Stephane
8-Jan-2011, 12:43
Thanks Jim. Yes, 300mm is short for 8x10, so I tried not to get too close, but cannot get rid of the wide angle effect. I'll try get the scratched kodak 405mm with loose iris. Meniscus lens above 300mm are not so easy to find... Anything lying around in your toolbox that could fit my needs?
Diva Grotesque is her model name. She usually poses in goth or pvc outfits, but not that day. Maybe next time ;)

Stephane, I think she was posed with her head forward from her body. I use 300mm lenses for portraits on 8x10 pretty regularly without the issues here. (Then again, some could find the effect quire appropriate and effective.) As you and Jim have noted, a longer lens would lessen the effect.

But it is a lovely and powerful image.

OK, that makes better sense. I guess if you look like her you can call yourself diva - anything you want and get away with it perfectly.

I've not got any "spares" but take the front group out of your 15" Petzval and you will have one.

Stephane
8-Jan-2011, 13:39
You are right, I should have the front element of a petzval always ready to be mounted on... I would like to try with the large vitax, but it is too big (and I dont know if this is common, but I can take the whole vitax apart).

I presume from depth and the exaggeration on the leg that this was done with a pretty extreme wide angle?

Here's my first plate in over 2 months since winter hit MN... Collodion was old and red and very contrasty. This was also a test of my new UV lighting setup... Interfit SC655 2 head kit.

Shot with Kodak 2D 8x10 and 9" F4-ish Darlot Lantern Lens... Exposure was about 5 seconds with 5 out of the 6 bulbs in each head lit. With new collodion, new developer, and a sunned and re-silvered silver bath, this should be at least a stop or so quicker...

For the first plate with the new set up I am very happy! I hope to experiment a bit more in the next few weeks.

thanks Craig.... I'd love to be having summer temperatures again like you guys no doubt are!!! Yes, it can be brutally cold here.... Some might question why I left the UK where I grew up to come to the frozen tundra!!

I'm loving these lights so far... Will experiment with newer collodion and a freshly maintained silver bath in the next few days hopefully!

Jim,

In the building where I have my studio, there is a very busy portrait studio.
All weekend long people come and go, all of them carrying white shirts on hangers and wearing jeans. Family after family is paying large dollar to be shot, barefoot in a white shirt and jeans on a white Cyclo. This barefoot white shirt gig has been running for several years now.

I see a lot of people carrying out large prints.
Not one of them could ever touch this!
Great pix!

Another of my "As Faulty As We Are..." series. Brendan started taking drugs at 10 years old and was in and out of jail as he struggled with his addiction to heroin and ICE. He's a leader in the "Transformations" program after graduating and now helps transform many other lives. So often we're distracted when we know the path we're to follow is clearly marked. He's an inspiration to me and everyone he makes contact with.

Tri Tran, Once again you are reminding us of what Large Format is all about and what makes it different. Thanks.

Thank you all for the nice words. I appreciate it. The reason I posted the picture format because most of the folks here might have not yet seen or tried the 12 inches Petzval on the 11x14 format. The Darlot 12 inches here covers nicely on my FS 11x14 ground glass as you’ve seen in this picture. A soft light fall off and dreamy bokeh transition is real smooth. The optic aberration of the petzval characteristic is well performed to the maximum around the edges on 11x14 plate. That’s is the beauty of the Petzval in my opinion! I do know I have to sacrifice the perspective here but well …you have to work around the composition, distance from the subject. I encourage people who use the Petzval lens do not hesitate to try and justify the image on the ground glass instead of the focal lens / the format.

I have no problem at all and I use a crappy netbook and a very old primitive Apple G4. It could be your computer... little RAM or very little space left on your hard drive? It could even be your connection.

Thanks William! This is something new my colleague and I are offering; Platinum Bridal Portraits. Full disclosure: this is a friend of ours in a borrowed dress :) We did this as a sample to show brides the difference between 8x10 film and a digital image. No "real" bride has been willing to give it a try so we created our own. We're hoping that once brides and their moms see the quality available they will just have to have one. We're marketing it as an heirloom product that will last generations.

Yes, its called dial up. I'm willing to be patient since I'm in the minority still being on dial up, but there is no reason images have to be so big that a page won't fully load even after 10 minutes. While we are in the minority there are still quite a lot of us out there-it only takes a few seconds to downsize an image, or post a link to a huge file somewhere else that we can choose not to click on. Most of that extra size is wasted anyway.

This image is closer to edges and not safely in the middle where it will have broader viewer appeal. On my calibrated computer monitor the image has graduated skin tones and she looks real. She is has a unique appearance in this image; the angle of her head and her long neck on her body are visually unusual and interesting. There is a feeling that she is tall and beautiful in many respects, but also awkward and gangly.

However on my laptop monitor, which is not accurately calibrated, the center of visual interest is overpoweringly the shiny part of the bra and bra's contrast with her skin, which is not the case on my calibrated computer monitor. The facial tones do look "plastic" on my laptop screen. So, what we might be different images also.

I for one find it visually interesting.

Shot it in May actually at the Tillman Crane / Russ Young soft focus workshop. This in the Olson House in Cushing ME. "Scanned in January" is more like it. 4x5 TMY2 in xtol. My shooting notes are in a reallllly safe place right now and without them, I can't remember if it was shot with a Kodak 305 portrait or a veritar. (Sorry for the CRS moment) Wide open, whichever it was. In addition to the backlight, there was some light from the stairway and some from a portable wescott 5-in-1 reflector. I was backed into a dark corner and couldn't get a wider view than shown here.

As to the scan line. Check the area of the scan glass where the scan starts. It's usually the place where is 'zeroes' out (background). If there is a spec of dust there it will make that the background across the whole scan.

While she's easy on the eyes as a whole, I think the tones and position of the right hand combine together to be the nicest part of the image. Really really nice. Sort of like the rich B&W tone of "Migrant Mother" but without the grit.

[This is a repeat because I can't see my original. My apologies if you see a duplicate.]

If your scanner is a Microtek, these artifacts may be saved in the 'settings files'. Microtek's solution is to delete the settings files and let the software create new files when you set up the next scan. I can't seem to locate my downloaded instructions, but you can find them on the Microtek 'tech support' site under FAQs for 'striping'.

Hmm, sorry about this.. but at first i saw a plastic doll, took me some time to realize it actually was a real person, so i wonder about the emotional side of this image?

so you've gor it - the name of the session: "doll box". will share more in a day or two.

I think I've died and surely gone to Heaven, staring at an angel with jaw dropped.

Sure, a beautiful subject helps for a nice portrait.

square catch lights in eyes
At least you know my lighting setup: one softbox and a bounce thingy.
Sorry for my loss of words, just coming back from a geology and wine evening (and the best wine was where I come from, so RamiroElena you can feel good too!)

Yea, she is a doll, and said she will come back...

I agree. I think I'd prefer a round light source :)

...WHAT!? you mean French wine is better than Spanish!!!? :D :D :D

I don't mind the square; it echoes light from a window. One could always throw faux curtains and pane dividers over the soft box tho complete the illusion... Or round is nice too. Umbrella-shaped reflections are the bother me...

Regardless, it's a lovely portrait, Stephane!

You know what? Lets meet, at least for an argument, then I'll go to France after...
I'll be happy no matter what, my gf will be with me, and we dont have a baby yet ;)

Bed time now for me (before lightning strikes me). Tomorrow, its business talk at work, so gotta be fresh...

The Eighth Wonder of the World ... UNBELIEVABLE!! No tatoos and ubiquitous hardware here. Maybe a cross (star) filter for the catchlights, nah that would smack of commercial as well as draw more attention to the button that I feel should be cropped.

Andrew, I was thinking about buying the same setup you have, the Interfit SC655 kit for my studio collodion work. How do you like the setup, and would you recommend it?

I would recommend the interfit kit. I am down to 4 second exposures with my dallmeyer 3b wide open using 2 SC655 heads using the octoboxes without the diffusers. They work very well.
