I recently purchased a used Linhof 3414 tripod and am having a problem that I hope someone can help with. The 3/8 female threaded fitting at the top of the sliding column spins, and I don't see a way to tighten it or remove it for repair. When the camera platform is attached the whole assembly turns, and has a very slight amount of play in it–a bit of wobble.

Richard, I can't help you with that issue, but having used this particular model in the past, I want to mention that you should be careful with the wire spreaders (leg to central column). On mine they appeared to be made from aluminum rod (wire). In a couple of years the end of one of them broke at the strong bend where it joined the slider on the central column. A bit of a pain. To the best of my knowledge the tripod was not abused in any way and this breakage caught me totally by surprise.

I quit using it with my Sinar F after discovering the entire assembly vibrated enough in the wind (on a holiday to a distant location) so that upon close inspection every shot was unsharp beyond contact print size. It had proved usable on quiet days and in the studio. (Gitzo 4 series solved the issue.)

Thanks David, that's good to know. I''ll test the tripod before I put it to serious use.

Then you need to replace the 77mm Large Dual Thread Top Plate. You can order another one from Linhof Service. If you are in the USA you can reach them at 252 652-4401. We normally do keep some of these in stock.

There is nothing to worry about with the leg struts. I don't think we have seen more then 3 or 4 of them break over the 30 years I have been the Linhof Product Manager. In fact, even that may be a high number.

Just checked stock and we have the Large dual Thread Top Plate, the Small Dual Thread Top Plate and the 90mm Flat 3/8" Top Plate in stock so just give Marflex or your local dealer a call. The Large Dual Thread Top Plate is 003783.
