View Full Version : Your homemade lenses the the pics they did.
Lusting over the Jim Galli LGM lenses and exceptional images he makes I have been wondering. How hard can it be making your own lens? In the book "Primitive Photography" There are examples and how to.... descriptions but have any of you guys played around making your own Petzwal, Dallmeyer or Darlot "copy"? If so lets see what they can do.
Bset regards
there are a few threads out there from people shooting with home made optics. mark sawyer shot a series with a magnifying glass. i think it even made it into view camera magazine as well.

One option if you want to experiment with building your own lenses is to mount them on a 35mm bellows unit and use a DSLR to test the results - example attached

In addition to Mark's work, Stephane has done some very nice work with a magnifying glass optic (among other things). Check out the monthly portrait thread over the past few months.
Kudos to both!

Darned I must be getting old an rusty. Well I do rememder the threads on the magnifying glass lenses but I was looking for for homemade lensconstrctions like the "Primitive Photography" ones, symetrical/asymetrical duplets and triplets.

Okay, I don't know if this counts or not. It is my Walnut barreled 14" commercial Ektar with waterhouse stops! The optics I had and I made the barrel and stops.
Lens and stops and the image made with it.

There was a show at ICP (international center for photography) in NYC of a guy who made his own cameras out of toilet paper rolls, optics he found (I think I read he made some of his own lenses, but can't recall) etc. He was a recluse living in Czechoslovakia. Some of it is voyeuristic - many photos of pretty women - but compelling nonetheless.

A good source for lens elements is Surplus Shed: Link (http://www.surplusshed.com/)
