Richard, you always put out a great series of photos. I noticed that there remains a particular color cast to your c41 images. I don't know if you intend this as part of your presentation or not. I'm curious...

Thanks, I think this image does seem to have a blue cast. This is Ektar, which is something I have left in the fridge as I am staying with Portra now. Let me try again. The other recent images look good to me though.

No, no center filter. That's why the image shows some darkening towards the edges. Shooting 6x17 format with the 75mm lens helps to hide the noticeable corner darkening and/or vignetting that would be more evident in a full 5x7 negative.

Not that much darkening, good to hear it's not required. They are so expensive and seemingly hard to find.
I use a 90 and love the 6x17 format.
Very nice djdister! Did you use a read or orange filter? ND grad? How did you get this very good balance between foreground and sky?
I have also one last shot from my recently discovered spot not far away from where I live. It feels like this was the last day the sun was shining here in the north of germany:

Love the barn and the composition, Dan. Regarding the Canham 617 back, I have heard from several sources that these have issues with misfeeds. Any issues with yours? The bad rep has kept me on the sideline.

The original shot was on Ektar color film, so no filter at all. However in the conversion to B&W in Photoshop, I effectively dialed in a red filter which darkened the sky just like using a red filter when shooting.

I did have one issue with the Canham 617 back, that being the fourth and final shot on the roll being cut off at the end of the roll of film. So I went to the maker, Keith Canham to ask him about that problem (how many times can you do that?). He said this problem was caused by winding too much paper leader on the takeup spool during the loading step. It has to be the bare minimum amount of leader on the takeup spool before engaging the autowind step. So the trick is to ace the process of getting the paper leader just catching and then starting the autowind. If, when you hit the autowind, the paper leader doesn't engage properly, you just turn it off and try again. With this guidance in mind and some more practice, I shot 21 rolls of 120 film on a recent trip with not one single frame cutoff problem. It does require a bit more attention than a manual roll film back, but I think it yields a very flat film plane and is worth it in the long run. Keith said he should probably modify his roll film back instructions with this extra guidance, but I don't know if he did that yet.

Thank You for sharing! Some beautifull pictures. Also your other video's are very instructing: no internet knowledge but pure your own experience. This helps a lot and is so much time saving: e.g. using the 210mm for panoramic: I couldn't find users experience on the cropping, now I know it's not me causing it ;-)
Thanks Charles! I'm glad to hear the video was helpful!

Finally got a CF for my 72mm XL, so now I can properly shoot it on 6x17. Yesterday I went twice to Banks Lake, which is being drained to kill off some overgrowth or something like that, from what I understand. I was wearing my mud boots and stepping gingerly, but every once in a while I'd hit a pocket of air and sink a foot into the muck. Twice I had to leverage myself out with my tripod. I thought I was going to lose a boot!

Yep I was thinking a couple of tennis rackets taped to my boots would be just what I needed. They don't sell snowshoes here! :)

I couldn't find another 617 general discussion thread, so I'm gonna' ask a question here. I got a DaYi 617 back for 4x5 cameras. I knew there would be vignetting with lenses longer than 150mm, but I decided to try it out. I noticed when using my 210mm Symmar-S that the vignetting was noticeably heavier on the right than on the left. All my camera's bearings are at 0 for tilt and shift. Does this imply my camera's frame is beat up and possibly slightly misaligned? I just hope that when I'm taking pictures from "normal" position, they're not subtly distorted.
Second, does anyone with this camera back know how to use the shunts? It didn't come with a manual and I'm not sure how to install the 6x12 shunts.
Thanks for any help provided.
Senderaoburrido, aren't the things you call shunts screwed on to reduce the image size? I'd prefer to call them blinds myself (if we're talking about the same things ...)
Not sure what camera you are using but yes it sounds as though the markings on the camera are not exactly calibrated. If its a Shen Hao I can say that nothing will be aligned nor light tight in my experience. I've spent many hours fine tuning my Shen Hao bodies.
Its a good thing that it is fully WYSIWYG as far as what is on the ground glass ...

Sounds like there may be a small alignment issue. Also, if you use a 210mm Apo Symmar L you will get better coverage. I use it on an 8x10 and only get minor corner vignette focused at infinity and f16, so should be great on a 6x17. They can be tough to find, but every once in a while one will come up cheap on that auction site.

The Symar should easily cover 6x17cm. Something silly seems to be going on. Any of the 210mm f5.6 Plasmats should work.
dave_whatever
5-May-2016, 04:52
To the previous two posters, no 210mm lens will cover 6x17 using a Dayi 617-4x5 back, because of the mechanical construction of the back. The longest non-tele lens you can use with these backs and still safely illuminate a full 6x17 is about 180mm.
You can use longer tele lenses as long as the flange distance is no longer than about 180mm. For a while I think I used a Fuji 300mm f8 tele with mine, the flange distance was if I remember correctly 189mm, close enough to get you a more-or-less 6x17 image at infinity.
To the OP, if your vignetted 210mm shot is offcentre then yeah something is out of alignment, with your zero shift markings or the back itself - should be pretty easy to establish which one with a tapemeasure or ruler. But I wouldn't necessarily worry about it.
The Symar should easily cover 6x17cm. Something silly seems to be going on. Any of the 210mm f5.6 Plasmats should work.
I agree the 210mm Symmar covers 7x5 with ease, so 6x17 is no problem, it's the DaYi/camera back itself causing the vignetting, it's an issue using an extension back on a 5x4 camera.

That's correct, Ian.
I simply didn't want a blanket statement about 210mm Plasmats not covering 6x17/5x7 floating around uncorrected.

6-May-2016, 09:36
Yeah, I anticipated that it would cause vignetting because of the construction of the DaYi back. It made me unhappy to see that it was uneven, is all. I certainly didn't expect that. I became worried all my shots taken with the 4x5 back were subtly distorted in a way that was ruining shots. Is misalignment natural, with a metal-framed camera? I hope that in my ownership I haven't bent it or ruined it in some way. It has traveled with me, albeit disassembled, once or twice.

Randy I am really liking these. Buying some xray film to try this myself. Awesome idea!
I tried enlarging 35mm negatives onto x-ray film (8x10) a couple of years ago, for alt processes, and everything was hopelessly soft. How is your internegative look sharpness-wise?
I believe what I have done is make an enlarged interpositive which I want as my finished product, to be viewed by rear illumination on a light box.
I have also printed similar interpostives to paper which makes a negative looking print which was my goal.
I am experimenting.

Bryan, see this post also, where I printed a negative image on paper, using an interpositive. 3 exposures.
Cool. From what I remember my internegative wasn't particularly sharp but once I contact printed that onto another sheet of film for the final negative to print, it was just a blurry mess. Might be the dual emulsion causing issues. Not a substitute for lith, like I was hoping anyway.

Beautiful photo Frederick! And thank you for the kind words earlier. You can still find E100VS from time to time, shame it's not sold anymore as it was a fantastic film.
All these latest images are awesome. Lots of color work which is nice. But here's a change of pace :).
I shot these months ago but had one shot left on the roll, and then I moved so it sat in the camera. I can't even remember what river I was, but possibly the Alapahoochee. Finally took out my 617 today and finished up the roll.

Lake Tekapo, and that church. 2012.
Shen Hao 617 with a Fujinon 210mm. Velvia.
I waited and waited for the light to come through the clouds behind me. There's also a big hill behind where I had set up.
In the end, right before the sun was to go behind the hill, there was a 5 second break in the cloud. Only had time to fire off one shot at an estimated exposure.
This time, I ates the bear....

Great set of images. I have a question since this is also a discussion forum. For those who scan and print large for color prints, what is the largest size your print. I'm looking on printing of my 6*17 on fujiflex but seem to be limited in my options. Destination is an office with mat and frame behind museum glass presentation

I've been shooting 6x17 for years after I made a semi-split negative camera (split 5x7 film into two 6x17's).
Later I modified a 6x17 Fotoman to 6x15 format so I had more options for landscape photography where 6x17 was too wide to concisely compose a subject.
Read Rudolf Arnhem's book "The Power of The Center".
Here's an example or three...

Thanks, still don't know why it seems so difficult to make a good panoramic photo work.
For a panorama to look "right", the axis of rotation (vertical) must pass through the 1st lens node.
The node location varies with each lens design and focal length.
It also varies slightly due to manufacturing tolerances within any specific product line.

Leigh, I do understand where you are going but my problem is -I think- one of composition. Often I stand somewhere and I'm taken in by the view. But when I see the photos it is just bland, saying nothing. Empty, void of any content.

Cemetery, at Dufur, Oregon...
Dufur Oregon's cemetery is on a lonely, windswept hill on the grasslands east of Mount Hood.
Nearby, a Charley Brown doll had been placed next to a marker for a young boy (unrelated) who also died too early on this lovely, lonely land.

Looks good tuco. Interesting perspective, there is a feeling of spatial depth. Contrast looks good and I am not seeing any falloff in the corners. Does this format/lens need a center filter? I have no experience with 6x17. Well done.

Thanks. Yes, Fuji supplies a 1-stop center spot ND filter for the lens and I used it.

These are the first test shots with my new Shen Hao 617 camera. I shot with a Nikkor 90/4.5 and Nikkor 150/5.6, two shots at each focal length. Scenery not much to speak of...typical Texas winter mid-day with a usual blase' sky. Not the best time to shoot, but with the weather we've been having I was anxious to get out and give the camera a try. Film was Ilford Delta 100. Looks like I'll be needing a center filter for the 90. Since I'm new to this format, critique is welcome.

Seb, Tuco, wow incredible work on the 6x17!
Thanks Sheel.
Trying the 90/5.6 on people. A longer focal length would be better.

I'm still practicing and trying to get the hang of my Shen Hao 617. These are just two recent practice shots. Hay bales were very early morning light, which led to some difficulty when looking at the ground glass; pool was shot in better conditions. I wasn't too concerned about the overall composition...just wanted to get in some more practice with metering, focusing, etc and finish off the roll of film. Delta 100 scanned on Epson V800. I'm open to any critiques or suggestions.
