I love Callahan's work, especially his Eleanor series. I had his photos in mind, as well as some of Weston's nudes and this (https://secure.flickr.com/photos/joweldon/6590993963/) line drawing by Picasso. I keep telling my wife that she should play the same role for me that Eleanor played for Callahan. So far she's a bit reluctant.

Mark,
This photograph is lyrical with the repeated curves from her body to the furniture. There's also an overflowing sense of attitude that holds everything together. She does seem like a real woman, complicated, but someone with who a relationship might be doable! The polygonal rocks behind and the different pieces of cluttered furniture makes for an almost "cubist" background to her smoothly curvaceous body. You pulled it off! how did you come put this all together? Is the background real or a giant photograph? Also what is that diagonal line from upper left to about 1/4 of the way across the lower part, approaching in the direction of her right foot on the left side of the photograph??
AsherSorry guys, got disgruntled with Wet Plate and busy all at the same time and since this was all an experiment it took a back seat for awhile ;)
Yes, this is Liala, my favorite to work with by far, she can always pull it off and her attitude shows perfectly. The background is definitely real and will make a return appearance soon, like next week! I had a friend call saying he's getting married and his wife really digs my wet plates so I'm attempting to come out of retirement, I called these two and before I knew it we have an army of these sweethearts showing up next weekend, hope my mix comes together well! here's a couple more of my other favorite attitude rich ladies

Thanks Serge ... this is what the work is about ... working with somewhat unpredictable film and making creative use out of it. Each box of 809 has its own character (color cast, developer aging/viscosity, impressions, ) and that somewhat impacts how I use it
thus destroying the romantic fantasy of most male "art" photographers. What is that? the hope that life depicted in light porn is in fact real?

........ and physical body attributes.
This thread is already filled with whacking material billed as "art" followed by comments from men about photos of naked women, with nothing but words about the "physical body attributes" and none about photography -
However - comments like the one above cement the idea that this thread, created by males, showing naked women and drooling over them has nothing to do with photography, art, or large format, other then the physical attributes that just happen to be that they are photographed in large format:
Read - if this was a not attractive female showing her breasts one would only like this second best, but a more attractive female in digital would go the whole way for me.
StoneNYC - this is not the forum to let people know who you want or not want to meet in bed.

Well that is if you try and get the collodian to bug out around the edges a certain way as I do, this is the real fun even when surrounded by a handful of little honeys. I've never once asked a women to pose nude, they contact me and frequently. Ok I'm going to post this again and let's analyze what I said.
I like this second one a lot. Pose, light, posture, texture and physical body attributes.
First, I only remarked about the woman once, while I mentioned 4 of the artists creative input.
The pose - overall look, hand hanging off the edge, look on her face toward the light source etc. and the way she holds her arm slightly away from her body so that her arm is even all the way down rather than squished like many do.
Light - the direction, exposure, intensity and falloff factors.
Posture - the way she holds her body, her shoulders are back more, straighter lines and spine.
Texture - both created by light and by the medium of the image (Polaroid film).
And finally...
physical attributes - her FACE, the way her chin is cut and angled, the way she pierced her lips just so, the eyes so direct, the way she is toned but not cut up, nor fatty, and yes the particular way her breast tissue rests because of the angle she is at.
Her bosom is much more accentuated in the first image, so if I were thinking of bedroom appeal, I would have gone with that one.
Side note, this is not the type of women I am into in bed...
Seems you're the one with the adolescent mind who can only see sex in imagery and in others words and has little concept of the difference between sex and art....

Haha I didn't either until I went to the link he posted, poor girls. I agree they put themselves out there, in a much bigger way because they aren't posing for art, just cell phone nude shots that are used to demean them instead of uplift them. I think intent plays a huge role in context.
Anyway, back to the topic, I won't have anything new in nudes until after the 20th, it's all mountains for me right now...

I'm sympathetic to your plight but one advantage of shooting large format with a boner is that you always have a convenient place to hang your darkcloth.Actually you don't have to address them as babe, that's sort of a given considering they are standing there nekkid impatiently waiting their turn. I choose to address them the "Westminster Way" I line them up and "1, 2, 3....." and leave a couple sobbing because they were inferior in Hottiness. In all seriousness, from my experience honeys are good looking and personable with great attitudes. Babes can be lacking in the personality department and still be a babe. In all honesty, we all call each other many things during a shoot, the back and fourth banter is the most fun part of the shoot. The "ringleader" is very sassy and fun and keeps the mood flowing well and has created a dark cloth hanger on occasion

I just don't understand why people who protest so loudly are even reading the thread they are complaining about???? If I see a thread that I don't like I don't waist my time reading it and move on to something that does interest me. The only problem with the shots of women with perfect bodies is that there are so many of them. That doesn't stop me from looking at them but it is really difficult to produce an image that is unique.
I did this shot about 2 weeks ago and certainly would not classify it as sexy but I felt it conveyed something.

Yes, Mark. The live/work space I'm in has a 20-foot ceiling. One end has a roll-up door that opens up nearly to the ceiling. I got an old parachute and pulled it across the opening at about 7 feet, for privacy. I shoot inside in the shade, near the opening.
I have found that exposure times for collodion are highly inconsistent. There are a number of variables in the chemistry, including the age of the base collodion stock, the age of the mixed collodion stock, and the strength of the developer being used. The mix I'm using now seems to be a tad on the slow side. Of course the available UV light can also fluctuate greatly day to day, and even shot to shot (which was killing me in Yosemite for the octotych).
If I were shooting this in full direct sun, I would guess it at about one second.
Thanks for the feedback! Ed

It is in fact three 5x7 sheets conjoined. The bedroom is only ten by ten feet so I couldn't get any farther back from the bed, and a wide angle perspective was not what I was looking for, so I went for a triptych instead.
As for the suggestion to have her move her left leg, that is welcome. I am new to portraits in general and this is the first full length nude I've ever done, so there is lots of room for improvement. I was too busy worrying about lighting and framing to think about the pose itself in great detail. Next time!

Thank you. I am pleased with the result and look forward to trying other poses and different lighting. I have thanked my wife profusely for allowing me to photograph her in this way and, more importantly, allowing me to share the image publicly. This is a big step for her in terms of working past vulnerability issues. I'll pass on your kind words.

Thanks very much. It's an image that exceeded my own expectations in many ways, which is a great feeling. Usually the opposite is true, unfortunately!

Jonathon,
To begin with, DAMN fine work and that's all there is to it! As one who used to be married to a lady who also had vulnerability issues and in her case, serious body image issues, I completely understand what challenges your wife is overcoming. While this image is a stunner in terms of both the photography and the woman, the one you posted recently of her smile while swimming earns my kudos as to what a delightful personality she must have as well as her own beauty.
My extreme compliments to you both. Looking forward to the next installments in your evolution together.

Thank you. I must say that the kind responses about this recent image have been a real boost for me personally and offer great encouragement to continue in this vein, but more importantly the sensitivity and kindness expressed in regard to my wife and her willingness to pose for me has been most welcome. We've all seen some of the flare-ups that happen in this thread, and while most people here seem to be decent and caring, it is always a risk to share personal imagery in such a public way. I hope people understand that their thoughtful responses mean a great deal to me and to my wife as well. She may blush a little, but it brings a smile to her face when I share your comments with her.
I offer my gratitude and respect to those who have commented so constructively and thoughtfully. Truly.

This is so damn good-one of your best in my opinion. You've got everything working here: subject, light, composition, mood, materials, and not least of all execution. It must have been very difficult to line up each of the three shots correctly! What is especially amazing to me is that each section is balanced and interesting (the forms!) on it's own, but the whole thing is also perfectly unified. I love how the curve of your wife sweeps across the entire image, and how the bed echoes that same shape. Wow. The fact that it's a triptych, with the breaks and those great glowing edges makes it all the more interesting. An evocative and truly memorable photograph. Curse you. :-)

Thanks very much, Austin. I feel that it's one of my best, too, in part because I was able to capture in the image that which I saw in my mind's eye. This doesn't happen very often--at least for me--but when it does it makes it all worth it. Yet it also raises a difficult question: where to go from here?

One room, one window, one camera, one month: sounds like a good idea for my next project. I guess I should have asked the question: how do I improve from here? Keep shooting, I suppose.
You mean you can take hundreds of pictures of glasses but don't know what else to do with a naked chick?
To that end, here is another attempt from today using window light and fresh film. It's not all I want it to be, but I'll keep trying.

I love the idea but why is it so distressed with the Instagram-like filtering? Or did the film get dropped on the floor on purpose?
Laura,
It's a wet-plate image. Part of the charm of this process is its "imperfections". Instagram only tries to (poorly) replicate this "effect".
Tim

jcoldslabs
28-Aug-2013, 14:52
But the imperfections aren't required are they? I've seen lots of Wet Plate images in my Photo History class and the museum but none of them have debris on them. Why would someone do that on purpose to an otherwise good image?
I think you'll find that vintage ambrotypes and tintypes also had rough, textured edges from where the plate rested against the film holder, but these imperfections were always hidden by frames or mats. Many modern practitioners of the art embrace the flaws as part of the process, much in the same way some people, such as myself, often choose to include the goopy borders on their Polaroid images in a way that was not originally intended.
tl;dr: It's an aesthetic choice.

I was merely stating that your image is quite different from Feiningers' work, despite the superficial similarities (being a solarized female nude). Yours is much more subtle than the harsh, high-contrast line effect of much of Feininger's corpus. It wasn't a criticism; I think your image withstands the comparison very well indeed.
This (http://pinterest.com/pin/259871840969857531/) is the image I had in mind.

Good eye, Leigh. My 8x10 wet plate camera has no swing or tilt. But the front standard is tilting forward, from carrying a heavy brass lens, and the rear tilts backwards because the fold-down extension board extends just a hair too far, so the whole rail hangs down a bit off axis. So I have permanent tilts, front and back.

Thank you! I struggled last night with whether the overall balance of the picture could be improved upon. I added one of the reject "hat" plates to the bottom of the image, upside down, and decided that I really liked it. So I think I'll frame it this way tomorrow. Like most all large format work, this really looks more impressive in-person, and I'm excited to hang it on my wall. Thanks for the positive feedback!! Ed

Hi Leigh. No problem at all! I like the feedback. I realize it is absurd, but I think it works with the surrealist/cubist approach to the image. And I kinda like the visual symmetry it achieves. Anyway, thanks again!
Yeah. Given the rather unusual nature of the image as a whole, it works.
I doubt any viewer would glance at it and accept it as an accurate rendition of reality. :D
- Leigh
I'm not a big fan of the hat at the bottom either. I would like to see that bottom piece instead of the tip of the hat on top, it fills the top frame a little better. I agree that an extra frame on the bottom balances the composition, but I think it is one step too far.

But I'll give it a try..I never had this problem again when I switched to Mac about 5 years ago, with my old PC it was always a crap shoot no matter screen/printer/monitor
That last shot with the extra hat looks like somebody did something nasty to her legs, like chopped them off. A casual observer won't realize what the hat is, nor why it's there.
I like the hat top and bottom much more
I am with Mark. I certainly don't feel like that's about chopped-off legs or anything like that; I actually see the cone as a sort of mysterious symbol turning the legs into a mermaid's tail or, more likely, into a stream of fog this supernatural lady is emerging from.
In fact, I was making my way through this topic pages backwards, and when at last I got to the original coneless version, I had a feeling it just wasn't complete - kind of a wrong crop indeed.

I agree once I got a Mac I was much more incident in the results though I know their monitors aren't as adjustable, they are still fairly accurate.

I like it soft and back light.... only 9 thats good also i have pitched a whole session cuz it was not what i wanted.... and sometimes i nail it on the first exposure and the keep going. depends more on my mood and the mood of the model. I; in general feel shooting models are not good for me when taking nude images. I work better with a friend or girl friend. Some one that you already communicate well with and is comfortable with you and i them...... it is obvious at-least to me you have a good repose with your model

This is by farms best work, but I was with a friend who's in photography school and it's a shitty school, they don't even have strobes just hot lights, so she wanted to try out using strobes so I spent the day doing setups and shooting with her digital and helping her complete a color project with red balloons at the end I grabbed my 4x5 and took two images of her for fun, and one color, which isn't developed yet.
Here's the better of the B&W images.
TOYO45a Schneider 150mm f/5.6, Profoto 2400 Freeze pack and 2 strobes with reflectors. Lowest setting on the strobe of 1/16th (so 150?) the power on B for both so split that = 75WS power? Should have used a smaller pack, too much power haha

The first one is beautiful. The answer may be obvious but this is all natural lighting through the window? Her skin looks almost painted on. I like the composed but natural position of her hands. The only flaw I can see is her right elbow that has disappeared behind her body so her right hand appear out of nowhere. Would be interesting to see in a fine print with that skin worked to perfection.

Thanks Stone. I am using KCN for fixer. It reduces as well as develops. If I leave it on (after "straight" development), it will reduce the background to the extent that the natural waviness of the developer pour is revealed, which is what you are seeing. You also see it reducing to the extent that it is actually eroding the image entirely, at the top of the shot. So you need to be a bit careful with it.

Thanks Randy. She's actually leaned against the wall for stabilization. I've tried "free-standing" shots, and I don't think I've ever got a sharp one over 2 seconds. I use a free standing head brace for most of my standing images, or the wall. The brace helps, but it isn't foolproof.

Judging by the sharp books in the bookcase the lens was actually tilted backwards/up.
