View Full Version : December 2010 Portraits

Well this is scanned in December at least....

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/data/500/bill_koch.jpg

This is one of my first portraits, done in 1983, of Olympic medalist Nordic skier Bill Koch in Eugene, Oregon. I blew the shot, it was dim and I didn't know what I was doing -- this is the best I can salvage it. I was embarrassed so I never gave him any photos. If anyone has his email kindly let me know as I have some semi-blurry 4x5 family photos for him too.

27 years later they don't seem that bad, I could always claim it was the special Flourderagon lens "look".

My birthday's next week; at nelsonfoto.com (http://nelsonfoto.com/v), it's customary to post a birthday self portrait. I started trying my hand at large format self portraits today:

http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/dd359/smpsweeps/0104a.jpg

For those of you who can do this, I'm in awe. This was a Seneca Competitor with 4x5 Graflok and a Darlot Hemispherique Rapide #2. I have a long way to go...

This one might actually work pretty well as an alt process print via inkjet interneg, or a straight inkjet printed at a lowish dpi setting.

Hey Scott, looks very nice. You might try a stool as I find the back of the chair distracting, especially the plaid upholstery.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate the comments. FWIW, I shot one more sheet (the last I think I'm gonna do for a while), but am going to mull it over for a while to see if I like it enough to post. I tried incorporating your suggestions, though - they were great.

Frank - You might be able to get hold of him through the clothing company, Sporthill. They used to make his signature series xc ski clothing. That was a few years ago, but somebody may still be able to hook you up.

Stephane, That's a lovely pic, I think the prices on Veritars are going to go up!

Can I ask about your focusing technique, do you start with the lens at infinity and focus closer, or the other way around?

Every time I attempt to focus a Veritar, I see two sharp focus points, one near - then is goes soft again, and then another sharp area farther away, and I am unsure which one to use. Any tips?

This is the first image taken with the Petzval-type lens I bought from the shady Australian guy.
I wanted the whisky in focus.
I'm not sure how this lens performs yet, looks a bit odd right now, with the weird distortion on the left hand side. I'm not talking about the screwed-up development (I tried something new for the first and last time - hehe), but the rather severe radial distortion, which showed up more on a different image. I've opened it up and tried to align the lenses as good as I can, and I'll try again over the weekend. I'll find out the size and shape of the IC and so on. This is fun, but I don't quite know yet whether I bought a dud...

This was shot, developed and scanned under the influence of Ardbeg as well, so there is that... :D

I like this one, Scott. I think removing the chair, making the lighting slightly more dramatic (less light on the shadow side, perhaps), and choosing a sweater which either stands out more or blends in better with the background might help a bit. Try not to look like you are worried about the outcome of the photo either :)

Can I ask about your focusing technique, do you start with the lens at infinity and focus closer, or the other way around?
Larry

Sorry Larry for late response, I did not realize there was so many comments...

Anyway, what I do with the veritar is very much how I do with any sf or meniscus lens.

I rack the rear to bring the face in near focus.
Then I find the position so that I have a feel of sharpness over the face.
From there, I concentrate on the lips of the model and pull the rear standard towards me gently. When the lips look nice, I use the micro-focusing knob (I am a sinar guy) and find the point for the best lips.
SF lens have the ability to have a greater depth-of-definition than normal lenses have a depth of focus wide open. So I dont look at the eyes, but the mouth, to find the right amount of softness.

One more thing: I do not use a loupe. I try to look at the gg as far back as the dark cloth allow. Maybe 40 cm, and have a better idea of the overall picture.

I am no expert, just trial and error, and found this method to work for me.

My first Lens tests for the Voigtlander Euryscope II. It has very creamy bokeh, and plenty of it when shot wide open. The shot, itself, would have benefitted from use of a soft box. That would have kept the highlights on her face in check.

I developed this one in PMK Pyro. It scanned easily, and has very good tone, apart from the highlight problem I mentionded. I scanned in RGB mode, then converted to grayscale.

Camera: Ansco Studio with 5x7 back.
Lens: 11 1/2" Voigtlander Euryscope Series 2, shot at F4.
Film: Ilford FP4+ developed in PMK Pyro.

A couple of portraits of one of my high school students, done on 8x10 with a 12.5-inch f/3.5 Portric Knuckler. It can go noticeably softer than the more common f/4.5 and 5.6 versions, but doesn't flaunt those wild-eyed aberrations like the pictorialist lenses. This is a portrait lens, with a more cultured, sophisticated look that will still make your jaw drop like a young Grace Kelly just walked by...

The first image was done wide open, full-sharp, the second wide-open, full soft. It's hard to appreciate what this lens does in the crappy little web scans... razor-sharp detail, but sooooooo creamy smooth, and with a glow that doesn't throw spherical aberrations in your face like a bucket of ice-water. Ohhh, but those Cookes must have magic glass! :)

(Sorry, but I love my old lenses!)

Mark,

Wonderful portraits!!! I clearly remember that lens you got off from ebay for merely a few hundred a few years ago and I was very interested in it and would bid on it if I did not have a 12" f/3.5 Dallmeyer portrait lens already.

But you are the magician and my hat is off to you!

Thank you for sharing the beauty!

I really like that Kalosat look! Where on earth do I find a lense like that?

On ebay, about once every other year! I agree with you, a lovely image from a lovely lens.

Forget about it, yours are far superior.
What was the size of of the main light? Looks a little like a small softbox in the 2nd shot, larger in the first.

This was just a big (42-inch) umbrella at about five feet, and reflective material opposite it. The only thing that bugs me about umbrellas over softboxes is the shape of the reflections in the eyes, and I avoided them altogether here. I have mixed feelings about reflections-in-the-eyes in general. One is nice, two is too much, and any at all and I know the photographically-inclined audience is using them to analyse the lighting set-up!

...I clearly remember that lens you got off from ebay for merely a few hundred a few years ago and I was very interested in it and would bid on it if I did not have a 12" f/3.5 Dallmeyer portrait lens already.

Yep, I think it was around $700, which was a bargain for that lens! It was on my really-want-it list, and I was surprised I got it, especially at that price. I'd actually bid a bit more...

And thanks all for the kind words! You make me feel like I almost know what I'm doing. :)

I don't generally use photography as an end result but mostly as photographic reference for my painting. The higher the rez the better for ref purposes. I had some hair brained idea that never materialized on canvas. I had this clamp really tight around my head, but it was so heavy, the thing gave away when I triggered the shutter. The photo is a far better proof of my hubris than any lame canvas could be.

My girlfriend asked me to shoot a few photos of her for the big 50 birthday. I must admit, she is THE most beautiful 50 year old woman I have ever seen. No surgery, no face lifts, fake boobs, tummy tucks etc. She comes from a family with a long line of beautiful women who were her ancestors. Grandma, Mom and Sister are stunning.

Anyhow Cooke PS945, expired pola 51. straight up nothing fancy. Im not a very good shutter clicker but am passable when need be.

Really absolutely stunning work keeps being produced here. I'm in awe of the talent.

I don't know why I haven't posted this yet, but maybe it has something to do with my last statement. From the flickr blurb:

I've been shooting 4x5 for almost a year now, and at the same time, slowly building up the supplies necessary to process it myself. This isn't the first I've shot, in fact it's the (second) most recent, but it's the one that finally inspired me to get Blix splashed all over myself. It's also my favorite of the eight I developed.

Initially I was unsure of the cause of the stain in the top left, but subsequently have determined it came from inadequate agitation.

I see the Kodak Portrait going up (even more) on eBay in a near future :D

Yup, I always have the shift going on shallow depth-of-field portraits, especially if there are two people to worry about. Just part of the fun.

But the joke's on the people who spend a fortune on those rare old lenses. I've used a bunch, and it turns out they're all exactly the same. ;)

I was so impressed with your lens, Mark, I went to Cameraeccentric and read up on it. There are some pretty extensive focus techniques listed in the manual. Whatever you use, it worked great on this shot.

Yeah, they really went to town on that explanation. They could have just said, "hey, the spherical aberration is over-corrected, so the depth-of-field spreads to the far side..."

Thing is, that depth-of-field spread is pretty subtle on anything other than a strong highlight, so I ignore all that and put the primary focus where it should be. (I think that's why Kodak goes on and on about the catchlight in the eyes being in focus, but I always look for the eyelashes to be in focus.) Anyways since the lens has no chromatic aberration, what you see is what you get for focus anyways, so you can let your eyes decide.

But yeah, it's a pretty cool lens however soft you set the aperture. And always so tempting to over-do it!

Thank you. I had no idea that a 105mm Solinar would cover 4x5. Nice photo too.

Thanks Jim and David.

Yes, the 10.5cm Solinar will cover 4x5, but only just -- it lights up the corners, but there's significant soft falloff from the sweet spot in the center. It's definitely a special-purpose lens, and you certainly can't argue with the price.

Re: Jim Fitzgerald Darlot portrait posted December 19, 2010.

Dear Jim,

What film and developer did you use? Is this a negative or a print scan? [You can scan either, right]? If a print, what paper and developer? Also, I am assuming that the model was wearing some kind of eye make-up on her eyelids and eyebrows, but what about below her eyes?

The photograph is quite expressive.

Thank you and all the best --Joe

Back when i still did film for medical image. I shot a study on pushed TMax 400 then used Litho film for the printand processed it in paper developer, best was Edwal Platinum, but Dektol worked too. This maintained some tonality, added some speed too.
Early on I was doing the same thing for internegs for gum printing.

I was reading my daughter "The Wind in the Willows" and came up with this idea.

It's my first self portrait. I hate photos of myself...I always seem to be on the other side of the camera (I know I ain't pretty).

It was extremely difficult shooting inside at f4 trying to reset myself in the focal plane after sensitizing the plate.

Holding the position for 13 seconds was a nightmare even with a headbrace. At least I know what I put others through now ;-)

I think it was wide open at 6.3 or 8, she sat on a stool all traditional like. I wish we fixed her hair. I've photographed her for a couple of years and she is a beauty but she really only has that sad expression, her smile is a bit awkward.

Yes it is hard to make sure they don't move between focusing and exposure. I try to watch them during this phase and loading the holder is sort of second nature and smooth, I'll glance to make sure it is set right... but if I find myself fooling around with the camera for too long I will admit defeat and redo the focus. I have a stack of film with focus on the tip of the nose or hairline instead of the eyes.
