Congratulations, Tri.

It is really wonderful to see some of the younger fellows like you and Jim making such progress with carbon. For many years I felt almost alone in this endeavor. Back in the early 2000s when I made a presentation at APIS on carbon (and Vaughn was also there with his beautiful carbon work), there were probably only about a half-dozen people in the world working carbon at a high level. I don't know the number now, but it has to be much, much larger, and growing every year as new people discover the process. This is very gratifying to me, and I am sure to Vaughn and the handful of other photographers who kept carbon alive until the current generation of folks like Tri and Jim discovered it.

Dear Sandy,
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. Carbon print has been my passion for all these years. I feel grateful for the opportunity to learn under Jim’s guidance. As you know I have been doing Platinum for quite a while so the Carbon process is a familiar transition. Platinum and Carbon printing is the ultimate art form, and I am glad to be a part of it.

With this coming exhibition at Santa Ana College, I'm excited and look forward for the public and the students to get exposure to this phenomenal art process. I am passionate about this level of processing photography and am honored to continue learning and keeping the process alive for the next generations to come. I think you’re a legend and the process you teach is legendary. I also look forward to meeting you, whether here in California or by chance anywhere else in the world.

Regards,
TT

Parking update:
FYI, parking is on Broadway but bring quarters for parking, the police monitors this very careful.* For the night of the reception(s) there are 2 parking structures in close proximity to our building.* One is on Broadway and 4th Street and the other in on Birch and 3rd Street, generally cost $2/night.* Also, there are a couple of nice restaurants in the Artists Village that you may want to dine at prior to the opening.

Tri,

Congratulations! I will be sure to be at your opening at SAC Arts on December 7th. I work down the street from there.

By the way, have you photographed in downtown Santa Ana? There is a lot to photograph. Take a drive around 3rd & Broadway and you'll get a good sampling of the possibilities.

Last night's exhibition "It's all in the details" was an immense success! It was such a pleasure visiting with everyone. My thanks to Phil Marquez, the art director of Santa College for hosting the event. Thank you, Phil for the opportunity to display my photographs! Hopefully the public had a chance to be exposed to the fine art of carbon and platinum printing. My thanks also to my family, my friends and especially my colleagues for coming. It was an honor having you there. For those who were not able to attend last night's event, the exhibits will be on display until January. We hope to see you all very soon. Attached are some pictures from last night's show.

What a wonderful evening I had last Saturday!

I have known Tri for three years and I clearly remember his first phone call to me asking for a 16x20 camera and I talked him into a 20x24 one. :)

Over the years I really enjoy visiting his house whose white walls graced with his platinum and carbon transfer works and wooden book shelves full of brass antique lenses and a garage/workshop with 4-5 ULF cameras carefully hidden from unknown eyes.

It's always a pleasure to hang out with this warm and talented photographer and I learn someting new every time I look at his work, but what impresses me most is his incredible passion for and focus on his photographic art. A passion that burns and drives him every day and a focus with the intensity like that of a laser beam.

He taught himself through the books how to do platinum printing a few years ago and his pt/pd work has such a exquisite glow and only three months ago he looked at Jim's carbon transfer work at my house and got hopelessly addicted to it and took a workshop with Jim and he is doing 20x24 carbon transfer printing now.

" It is quite a milestone for Tri tonight," I mentioned to his wife Wendy at the show.

" It is a milestone for me too," she replied to me with big smile lightening up her face.

" Tri told me that he spent seven hours on one print, that's really hard work ."

" Seven hours? No, it is two weeks on his biggest work!" Her eyes were gleaming with such fierce pride.

And on the first page of the guess book, his 12 year-old daughter Sabrina wrote:

"Dear Dad,

Congratulations and you are the greatest artist and best dad in the world! The very best!!!
Sabrina"

Tri, what else do you want from life? :)

I also learned something new that evening: when looking at a framed carbon transfer print in weak gallery light, you need to bend down under the frame and then turne your face upward and look at the print from certain angle to get the relief effect. :)

Great to hear the exhibition went so well and that so many familiar names were able to be with Tri for the event.

Wish I could have been there.

Hugo, very well said. It was so nice to see you & your wife, Matt and the other photographers come out to support Tri. I had fun standing back and watching Tri receive the well deserved compliments on his work. His dedication to his craft is evident in the quality of the work that was on the walls of the gallery.

Sandy, it is nice to see carbon prints "without glass" hanging in a gallery and how people were amazed by the relief and texture of the images. Many people commented that they looked like etchings.

Nice to see the pictures from this very well attended event.

Hugo,
Thanks for the kind words and compliments. I was touched by the turn out and the enormous support by my family, friends and collegue. It was a pleasure meeting your wife and have both of you attend the event. Thank you for your enthusiasm and kind input.
Thank you Jim and Matt coming from quite distance for support and help me explained the process to the guests . Your dedication to the art of large format photography is amazing.
Sandy, it would have been awsome to have you there. We hope for a visit in the near future.
Overall, the opening show for the “It’s all in the details” exhibit was a success. I am encouraged and hopeful that carbon printing will be on displays at more venues.
Jim, you should have a look at a picture taken of you while you were examining the large carbon print.

Tri, cool! But as you can tell I liked the 20x24 carbon print much better in the light.Wendy kept telling me that she wasn't a photographer. I think she is great. It is hard to take a picture of me that I like and tell her that I love this one!
