View Full Version : Advice needed for replacing shutter fabric

I'm in the process of trying to get my 1950s VN Press Camera back into working order.

The shutter mechanism works but the fabric of the shutter blinds has become very stiff and crinkled and needs to be replaced.

The focal plane shutter has a number of different tensions and variable slid widths to adjust shutter speeds from 1/10 to 1/1000 second.

Has anyone tackled a focal plane shutter like this before? Apparently it is a descendant of the Goerz camera so that may or may not be relevant.

I've posted a few photos and descriptions on my Flickr account:

I have heard of people using raincoat fabric and dyeing it black with RIT dye.

Hi ya Matt,
PM Ian Grant, I know that he's into Pickard shutters so he might be able to help.
Best wishes,
Pete.

Thanks Pete

I've been in touch with Ian over the weekend.

I was wondering if anyone had tackled a similar shutter. I'm not sure of things like whether it should be set to the widest or narrowest slit when I dismantle the shutter mechanism?
