Well, it was Halloween this weekend. It took me until the night before to realize that the perfect costume would be a 1940's press photographer. After all, how many people have a real working Speed Graphic and flashbulbs with which to do that? It was my first time using bulbs; somebody should have told me they smell like toasted marshmallows!

The last two were taken with a regular bounced Metz instead of the bulbs (saved those for 160nc shots). Interesting differences. Colors, for one. But also, 1/30th and f32 vs. 1/100th and f5.6. Yeah, ironically, my press lens is the only lens I have that doesn't have 'M' sync.

I think I shall carry a bigger Louisville Slugger, going forward...

Dear John,

This young lady is an Oil and Gas Process Engineer with a deep background in Chemical Science... :)

She was very instrumental with several chemical component removal projects in northern Alberta, specifically disulfide oils that are naturally trapped within the oil sands, which happen to migrate into the oil sands off-gas produced during the refining process. The project was a success, where the off-gas was contained, compressed and liquified, and stripped of every broken chemical bond, while being fractionated at downstream facility. The original energy within the off-gas was supplanted with clean natural gas, therefore reducing the previous airborne pollution, and the removed olefins became plastic process pellets.

She is very tenacious, extremely bright, where I am happy to know her as an associate and friend...

I really don't know how to do this: they are 14x17 contact prints using Xenotar 460mm f/4.5 at wide open. My scanner is too small so I taped the pictures on the wall and used my Sony digital camera to take snapshots of them. Of course, all the wonderful stuff including details on the 14x17 prints are gone. But I want to let everybody know that the lens covers 14x17 at portrait distance and it's is really sharp with nice shadows.

The young lady on the left was very reluctant to be within the last image, but she succumbed to her girlfriend's continuous insistence, where her minor stress was quickly illustrated in her smile, and her posture. As far as I know, the two young ladies are still friends... :)

Here's my very first ever large format photograph. Deardorff 8x10, f5.6, 1/30th, Fomapan 100, bath-tub dev in trays. Not very ambitious but it's a start. This is my neighbor who kindly stood in the cold while I fiddled with the unfamiliar knobs. The plain of focus transects her head and falls on the ground about a meter behind her (not by design). I need to get a proper dark cloth and a loupe. It's very hard to see whats in focus on a dull day. I heard somewhere that 4x reading glasses work. Not for me.

I do not have the space that you seem to have to capture a portrait, because of my very limited spacial surroundings, and as I discovered during the last few attempts that space and the sense of space, happens to be a very important factor within the final image. A recent portrait of a young lady that likes to entertain a 4X5 in the field. Her family owns a framed image, compliments of a charitable woman's cancer auction, so Nicole decided that she would claim her own image too. As noted earlier, same setting, same lighting, and another pleasant different subject this time.

Her sidekick and best friend made a quick humourous remark, just before I clicked the shutter...

That is correct, developed at my "Normal" development time of 9.5 minutes because I scan the negative, using 1 part XTOL and two parts H2O with continuous agitation in a JOBO 3005, and at a measured temperature of 20 Degrees Celsius.

Willing subjects and friends certainly add value to the image too, because they feel comfortable, compared to not...

First time trying out pyrocat-PMK with film shot at the Rockland (ME) breakwater this past weekend.

Speed graphic with yellow filter, TMY2 at iso 320. 17 minutes of 1:2:100 at 68f. This is about 40 minutes before sunset with a strong golden direct sunlight with corresponding strong highlights and shadows. A scene requiring serious compromise for a DSLR. The highlights on the skin and sneakers came out perfect, the shadows along the surface of the granite breakwater walk came out perfect. The black jacket came out perfect. I pronounce the developer/film combination great for this sort of shooting.

A back yard homage to Polaroid 55. I inherited a few boxes of the stuff when I purchased a Sinar F2 a year or so ago, and am just now getting around to trying it out. Now I know why everyone is mourning Polaroid's decision to discontinue it.

The subjects are a couple of recent mothers, both for the second time. Maybe that gives the pictures a bit of extra glow.

Thank you for your kind words... :)

I find that portraits can be fun, and now it seems that the female's boyfriends, husbands and, or their male escorts are starting to jump into the fray after I capture their better half's image, but I must create a different setup than what I presently have to obtain some variety. Including the male counterpart at some point positively relieves the tension between them. Two females just simply bring a bottle of wine, chat like there is no tomorrow while one is photographed, and they have fun relaxing during the session. I am extremely limited on space, distance from the subject, and my nemesis the ceiling height. Those solutions will come with time, I guess. For the moment, it is practice, practice, and more practice...

Received the Eidoscope! It's very nice to try a new lens, especially a SF lens, because the view on the gg is so different from lens to lens. The end result is also very specific. Shot wide open.

Yes, there's limited critical commentary, and there are occasions when positive responses are given for work from people who are just dabbling in the craft. Although it is true that posting work here is a bit like preaching to the choir, how else should it be? Critical commentary is everywhere on the internet and it usually dissolves into personal attacks with nothing having been gained.

Hopefully, those who do want to get a broader, more realistic, response will recognize the advantages of actually hanging their images in a public, non-controlled setting to see what the real world thinks of their work; not just family and fellow enthusiasts.

When you put up a photograph, even one you think is good, next to all the others in the thread, the truth is glaringly obvious. No need to be told how bad it is, and if its good, it looks like it belongs. The point is to encourage participation, and we all grow by looking and doing.

That said, you are entitled to your opinion, and to express it. But just like the real world, you get no respect untill you have earned it. Can you show from what sort of place your critiscism is coming from?

Fooled around with some paper negs this morning. My son has shown interest and the results w/paper negs come much quicker than film. He developed these with me this morning. Lens is a monster 14" B&L projection lens. The second photo was taken by my son--focus is slightly off but here the DOF is about 1/2 and inch so I cut him some slack.

I must take a moment to thank everyone for replying to this person's unsolicited armchair comments, whereto I believe you happen to know my emphatic position regarding an unsolicited armchair critic's inability to add value to any thread, or their inability to present an image or have a history that commands respect to validate their critiquing position. My original mission was to make a valid attempt at replying gracefully, and to offer the foolish soul an opportunity to recover from their error, but my mind was changed quickly, and I would like to close the door behind this person with immediate effect. This person triggered in rapid succession a few gross fatal errors, as this person stumbled through our group's front door again, while using a modified name… :)

His first and most infamous fatal error was to change his group nickname, allowing him to proceed with the comments that he did, while trying to impersonate a new "I did not know" member, which happens to be so prominent within his last reply. This person is an absolute frigging brain-dead fool. How can he not realize that his recognizable signatures abound within the internet, under several different names, and how could this person believe that he would remain invisible? This is an absolutely astonishing unfortunate event with his name wrote all over it. His second fatal error was not knowing or totally forgetting the expertise of the members present and, or how diligent some of us happen to be when it comes to defending a person or persons within the group from idiotic comments, such as his. To those members, I am indebted. His third and most significant fatal error was to address my finished work while employing a covert manner. So, "I will change my name to make a derogatory comment" Ektarmax, please remember the following. I know who you are.

I wonder how you will try to defend your position and how many folks will discuss your failed efforts going forward, because you have just made yourself into a fabulous and very humourous target with your failed credibility, where the world will require very little effort to be made aware of your foolish intentions, your lack of internet talent and, or your very poor and misguided logic. You have surely failed miserably…

For the moment, and I am only suggesting the following, but I believe that you should go home to your other groups, and I would also like to ask you to use your head more intelligently the next time, and I would also like to close this discussion by wishing you better luck among your estranged friends.

Alex in not my new love! Alex is a man... His portrait is further up in the thread.

I first took his portrait, explaining all the gesture I do. Then I sat and coached him. So it is not a self portrait really. So Alex took the picture following my instructions in composition. Focus is a little bit off, but hey, its not so easy first time to understand sf lenses. I also choose exposure, development. So in a way it is a bit also my photo.

I try to get someone to take portraits of for me. Hope this is allowed here.

Anyway, when do you consider your picture to be yours when you tripped the shutter?
