Greetings. I'm joining from Long Island, NY as a long-time small format photographer currently shooting mostly digital but recently re-discovered the joy of film in a 35mm camera. I also just taught myself how to develop B&W film in my kitchen. The missus thought I was nuts until she saw the results compared to the minilab's attempts!

I dipped my toe into LF about 15 years ago with 4x5. It turned out to be a costly and painful period. I foolishly bought all new gear and tried to teach myself but got my butt kicked my all the movements, bellows factors etc. I made a few nice images (and am still impressed by the power of a large negative or chrome, that's why I'm here) but mostly got frustrated. I sold all the gear within a year.

Fast-forward. I think I'd like to give it another try. Still love the big image, want to try to develop the film myself but don't want another beat-down by the camera so will go slower in diving back in. I'm older now, not in a rush to master things over night. I want to make more "art" than snapshots. I also (maybe this is really foolish) want to expose my kids to something different than a point and shoot. Mostly I want to experiment....

So, expect me to lurk about, asking questions here and there. In my day job, I'm an educator and one of the things I'd like to do is use LF imagery to examine my workplace and the things that happen there.

Cheers,
Bob

Welcome to group therepy! :) I'll start you off by giving you a tip that has saved me much time and a lot of anguish: take the time when you get a lens for your camera to compute the bellows factors for various extentions and tape/glue a small list on your lensboard beside your lens. Saves a lot of trouble when you're in the field. I have about seven lenses that I regularly use on my Cambo or my Super Graphic and each one has such a scale on it's board; the three convertible lenses I use each have a scale on the board for each focal length at which they can be used.

Plenty of stuff to make pictures of in Maine! Nice stuff on your Flickr. Like the graffiti on the bridge and the wheelbarrow.

Thanks...mostly I like taking pictures of the musicians I know in Boston...so that part is going to be harder. I just like Maine, photographs or not. Plus...that horrible essential...a job.

Good luck!

Where do you meet/work?

I saw you had a thread announcing meet-ups, but nothing recently.

it changes. who ever wants to go e mails someone with a date and a place and we go. all over the area in about a 100 mile radius usually. but that is not set in stone in any way....just our average.

basically suggest something and we will go....:)
