I've taken apart my Kodak 2d and noticed two sets of grooves in the back between where the ground glass sits and the camera body. Two run vertically and two run horizontally. They appear to have some kind of spring mechanism to hold something. I am curious about their function - any ideas?

It's to be used with a splitter, to allow two photos on one sheet of film. I had these same grooves/springs with the splitters on a Deardorff I used to own. I just recently found the same slots on my Ansco back, but had not checked my 2D since purchase. They wouldn't be hard to make if you have the proper measurements. It's a plank of wood with a lip around the edges, where the lip fits into the grooves. The spring in there keeps it in place.

I came across those too when I was restoring my 5X7 2d, more info here -
