I recently (in the last couple of years) read that Gitzo had new tripods. I thought I read that they moved away from twist locks on the legs to levers...but that appears not to be the case. They're still turn and lock.

I am also trying to figure what model replaces the old G1228. Based on the specs, it seems to be either the GT1541 or the GT2541. Anyone know for sure? Do you know where I could find the specs for the G1228 (mk2) to compare?

Hello Rider,

Here are the specs of the G1228 to compare:

This is just a simple scan from a 2003 Gitzo catalogue.

Thanks. It seems the GT2541 is the replacement; it weighs .4 pounds less and supports a lot more weight (26.4 vs. 17.6 pounds).

The GT1541 on the other hand supports the same weight as the old 1228, but weighs .9 pounds less (2.5 lbs). Is that a gimmick (it really doesn't look as solid in the pictures), or can the GT1541 really handle as much weight as the old 1228? If not a gimmick, it seems I might have a reason to replace the 1228.
