Great portrait Mark. Love the Rembrandt lighting. Bre doesn't take a bad one, does she?
Nice stuff so far, everyone!
Here's one from this weekend.
My brother got married on Saturday, I brought my Speed Graphic and was able to grab a few quick shots amid all the chaos.

Thanks, Garrett, but most of the thanks go to Bre. You're right, she doesn't take a bad one, whether she's in front or behind the camera. The Rembrandt lighting couldn't be helped; I was using that 5x7 Rembrandt camera, so what was I to do? :D
BTW, I remembered which lens; it's a 12" Kodak Portrait, wide open, testing the "soft focus doesn't fit on wet plates" theory. Looking at the scan, I think it might have been a better portrait with a Petzval. But when you look at the plate, it's hard to say...

BTW, fun "Rembrandt lighting" trivia from Wikipedia:
Origin of photographic term
Pioneering movie director Cecil B. DeMille is credited with the first use of the term:
DeMille explained in his autobiography that while shooting THE WARRENS OF VIRGINIA (1915), he borrowed some portable spotlights from the Mason Opera House in downtown Los Angeles and “began to make shadows where shadows would appear in nature.” When business partner Sam Goldwyn saw the film with only half an actor’s face illuminated, he feared the exhibitors would pay only half the price for the picture. After DeMille told him it was Rembrandt lighting, “Sam’s reply was jubilant with relief: for Rembrandt lighting the exhibitors would pay double!”

It's worth noting that Rembrandt rarely, if ever, used what we call 'Rembrandt lighting' today. Of course it can be a beautiful effect, by whatever name.

interesting!
I learned about "rembrandt lightning" from an old Norviegian portrait photographer, and his Rembrandt lightning has nothing to do with these examples!
I think (could be wrong, though..) that there's a difference in the lightning types whether it is meant for motion picture OR for still photography (?).
But maybe I'm the only one left, that teaches Rembrandt lightning "wrong".....
That's ok. It is a much nicer light.....;)

yes, but that's not what I learned!
Main light from behind the model - light that is strong and centered.
All light on the models face is reflected light from the beforementioned light scourse.
To make the light like Rembrandt, there has to be a smallish but strong light on the background - the strongest light must be on the background...
As if you're trying to see a person's face, when the sun is setting right behind him/her...
The rembrandt paintings (not so much his portraits) often has the strongest light behind the main subject - like a man carrying a candle fx....
Your Rembrandt description is - to me - just a classic 45 degree "triangle" light.. can't explain in english - sorry.
I still think the "definition" of Rembrandt as described by most people comes from motion film...
Confusing.
Gandolfi,
I have to agree with Dave, not only from his perfect description of what a Rembrandt lighting pattern is, but also from verifying this in Rembrant's own techniques in the illustrations in two biographies that I have.
As to his using the main light from behind the model, I can only find that in a very few paintings that featured windows or doorways behind the subject. All others have the main light very clearly coming from the front/side at mostly the classic 45 degree angle.
In none of the illustrations I have is the face illuminated by reflected light only.
The background light in most of these, especially the individual portraits, is almost exactly like a traditional photographic portrait set up, namely a soft glow to center attention on the subject by creating a delicate separation from the usually very dark background.
You are right, Rembrant lighting IS just like classic 45 degree lighting with perhaps a deeper contrast range to emphasize the triangle of light that spills across the nose.
I can't imagine where your teacher acquired his information, but I believe that he led you far off from what real Rembrant lighting is. Perhaps he was referring to the extremes of highlight and shadow and the depths from which the subject emerges, rather than the actual pattern of the light. In that sense, he most certainly would have been correct.
By the way, your use of English is wonderful and your explanations are quite easy to understand.

Dave nailed it! Look for that triangular patch of light, the dead giveaway. Some people call any side-lighting or chiaroscuro "Rembrandt lighting", but technically, it needs that little triangle.
Wikipedia has a nice little write up, with diagrams, though I'd call the reflector they include optional.

Eddie Gunks and Andy Richmond just spent two days shooting with the infamous Meagan and three other calmer models at my place.
Eddie and Meagan had a tussle so we have no wet plate boob shots of her from Eddie -- when will the boy learn? She just creates drama for sport, since she busted out her girls for Andy in an attempt to make Eddie jealous.
I just stood out of the way cooking dinner and ducked the low flying objects. Only one chair was busted up and the splinters came out easily.

she seemed to have forgotten what her job was.....being the MODEL! i figure if i am going to get grief then i will move onto the more cooperative models who were more comfortable posing in MY vision.
i share my ideas about what i am thinking for the shot and i encourage feedback and suggestions...... but it is not the model that does the dictating....:)

Yep she's OK.
I love the way she morphs from a tiny wisp of a woman into a tanned bruiser like this photo (no offense I hope... I love this photo).
I was grabbing a film holder during our shoot and looked up to see (on the ground glass) her leaning casually against the tree, like she was waiting for a bus, and wished I could have grabbed the shot. It was (in my mind) an exquisite moment... mine alone, I guess. :)
She said she was discontinuing travel, so I may never get to work with her again. I probably won't be doing that much work with figures, but then who knows the future?

Ah she went 7-8 years longer than most models and bought a house / supported a son with the money. Considering her prospects, she did really well for herself through her modeling. Especially compared to a few of the self-destructive models I've met.

The portrait of Marina (9 months) was more tricky as she wobbled continuously in all directions, and had to trigger where I thought she stood when I focussed... 0.5 out of 3.

With LF, the loading and unloading, cocking of shutters, etc. all take extra time and many inexperienced models are only used to digital "machine gun" shooting and don't hold poses well. Sarah was pretty good at watching me and listening for those tell-tale noises that signal a shot is about to happen... like the woosh of the dark slide and the return of the photographers attention to the model and scene. I only had her for a two hour slot, but we got a lot done... and I made a lot of mistakes which I remedied on my next shoot (http://www.darrylbaird.com/LF/2010_MI_Landscapes/MaryF/SoftFocus/resources/images/large/_5965756598.jpg). With her experience, I didn't need to rush or be nervous (of course, I still was) about the model being "ok."

Just another round of dittos for Sarah and other highly experienced art models. They are well worth paying a few hundred bucks to shoot with, you'll get more from one session than from most workshops.
The first shoots I did were with Sarah, Tiana Hunter, and Sarah Ellis, three of the best traveling art models on the scene.
Compared to a nervous newbie from Model Mayhem it's like night and day.... but once you learn from the pros, it is much easier to work with the less experienced models.
I don't need to pay models anymore (they tend to find and ask me) but when I know they are making their living from modeling I'll still help out and be as generous as possible. Don't be cheap, they definitely earn their money.

I bought an old Beattie Long Roll several years ago and my first model with it was Iona Lynn, (some may know of her here), so it turns out to be the coldest day of the year, she has on an Air Force flight jacket and hat of some kind with ear muffs.
I am trying to focus and she had brought her canon 5d or 40 d or some such. So she grabs her camera, gets a light reading off my old Normans and translates to me and says lets shoot. So I shoot. But she hadn't taken into account a 3 stop difference for bellows extension and a filter I had on the camera.
I abslolutely knew she was wrong, but didn't have the heart to tell her and just fired off a few. Too cold to concentrate. I learned a lesson and next time will be warm when I try this new 4x5 at the very least.
The second one I made (this one) was better, although the sharp area over his ear looks a bit odd.
Any idea how to avoid that..?
Simply by looking through this thread I'm getting a lot of ideas about how to improve. Inspiring.

nice shot.
his hair is sharp because that is the focus point. the hair is in the same "plane" as his eye....so it is also sharp. not much you can do about it. turn his head slightly would work. use a bit of front and/or back movements. maybe open up the lens a bit more so there is a more shallow DOF and then focus a bit more on the front part of his eye (more towards his nose) you may have been focusing a bit far back (or! more likely he moved....:) ) it looks like his nose is a bit out so if you focused forward more you may have less of the hair that is sharp.
keep posting for us to see.

Daniel,
Nice photo. What lens or other technique do you use to get all that diffusion?
Chris
Thanks, Chris. This was taken with a Pinkham and Smith Visual Quality lens wide open. This lens produces lots of diffusion wide open, but still retains definition in the eyes/lashes, which is hard to see in the small scan.
The lighting arrangement was a single softbox (medium high left), hair light (high right), and a light for the background.
All the best,
Daniel

Daniel,
I was talking with another forum member yesterday about the manual that originally came with his Veritos and Veritars. He said that it stated to get maximum benefit of diffusion, one needs a constrasting light against the subject.
Even though you're using a different lens, the concept remains clear in my mind and this portrait is a fine example to reinforce that need for a contrasting light behind the subject.
I'm just a hobbyist, so I'm still reading and learning from the work of successful portrait photogs. It's a good way to pass the time as I wait out the weeks for the soft tissue, tendons and ligaments to heal from my momentary lapse of reason. My subjects in nature have always been shot with available light. A recent portrait session of some visiting relatives has spurred on the motivation to try portrait work. It is adding a whole new level of Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Inspiration from Pinkham & $mith photos doesn't make it any more affordable!
Thanks for posting this and making my fiance smile. It makes it that much easier to convince her that I need to invest in a decent lighting setup if I'm going to move from landscapes and wildlife into portrait photos.

Thanks, guys.
Chris, we photogs have to stick together to support our habits!
To be honest, you don't need terribly pricey light gear to get very satisfactory results. I like to use constant light sources, as opposed to strobes, with my LF portraits, because the results are easier to visualize. Some homemade light modifiers and careful positioning of the lights and you're good to go.
All the best,
Daniel

Thanks! This is from the first time I've used large format to take portraits. Actually, this is the first time I've done portraits ever, really.

8x10 portraits. Film is 320TXP at box speed, developed in Rodinal 1+50. Shot with a Gundlach Rapid Rectigraphic on a Burke & James. Taken in Dolores Park, San Francisco. I just setup my camera and took portraits of people who stopped by to ask about the camera.
Are you stuck in August, unfortunately, the fall is here, and it's become September =(
But very nice portraits, nonetheless !
my portraits were taken in august. it was just last week!

When you're not expecting to see a photograph of yourself and you are then confronted by your own face it's quite a surprise! Many thanks to Joseph for lending me his time and expertise in showing me his lovely 8x10 camera. I'm sorry for flinching for the first 2 exposures!
Here's the very next image of Frank and Carl.
