“Due to popular demand” for our November workshop, Richard Ritter and Bruce Barlow have scheduled another date.

Fine Focus Workshops will hold an 8x10 “Tire Kicker” Workshop in southwestern New Hampshire Thursday evening, April 21 through noon, Sunday, April 24, 2011.

While the workshop will introduce photographers to the 8x10 format, it will be a complete Fine Focus Workshop. No large format photography experience is required. You need bring nothing except prints for our print review.

We will provide complete 8x10 camera outfits for each student, including camera, lens, tripod and head, dark cloth, light meter, holders, and film. We’ll have darkroom facilities to develop and proof negatives. Negatives undeveloped or un-proofed at the end will be completed and mailed to students.

We have lenses of different focal lengths to try and share from 305mm to 480mm. We have 4 Richard Ritters, a Sinar Norma, and a Zone VI 8x10 cameras to use. Meters are Pentax digital, modified by Zone VI Studios. We’ll swap so everyone has the chance to use everything.

Best of all, the tuition for the workshop is $200, less than half the usual $475 cost of Fine Focus Workshops, plus an $85 materials fee. The materials fee covers Ilford HP5 8x10 film, RC proofing paper, chemicals, negative sleeves, and postage. The reduced tuition is to encourage anyone curious about 8x10 photography to give it a try. Richard Ritter and Bruce Barlow think it sounds like a lot of fun.

Workshop fees include bagels and coffee Friday and Saturday mornings, sandwiches, chips, and water for lunch Friday and Saturday. We’ll eat out after darkroom sessions Friday and Saturday night. We’ll supply 8x10 HP5 film, developing chemicals, negative sleeves, RC proofing paper, and postage, if necessary. Students are responsible for transportation to Brattleboro, VT, lodging at Motel 6 (3 nights at about $50/night), Thursday, Friday and Saturday dinners (about $20 each night), and coffee and pastries Sunday morning (variable).

Class size is limited to 6. $50 deposits are required to hold a space. Email Bruce at BBarlow690@aol.com for more details.

Please make out deposit checks to Bruce and mail to: PO Box 10264, Swanzey, NH 03446. Money has to talk for this one, so spots will be held in the order deposits are received. Deposits are fully refundable if your plans change and you can't make it.

What're miles once you're on the plane? We've had folks in the past from Norway, England, even New York City.

We also had students from down under as they say.

Another note on the workshop. There is also a 7 x 17 camera and film to play with and a 11 x 14 camera and film to play with. If you want to work with these sizes you must let Bruce know at the time of deposit. There is only one camera of each size available.

Will the 7x17 be available at the Nov Tire Kicker? I'd love to give it a short test drive...

A 11x14 Ritter must be a thing to behold, wonder if I could make it? It would be like having 2 7x11's ....

The date is going to change. Richard and I haven't settled on a new date, but we just developed a conflict with this weekend.

Stay tuned...

Bruce,

Any news yet on the new date for the workshop?

Unfortunately, I have a conflict for the Ice and Snow workshop, otherwise I'd be there.

Hope to see you and Richard again soon.

Please note the change in dates!

To avoid conflict with Easter weekend, we have moved the dates to May 5-8, 2011.

We had a great time with the first one. Hope to see you in May.

Looks like a go. I think we have three sign-ups (meaning $50 deposits in-hand), of which I can find records of only two (I'll find it, maybe,,,Suzanne and Pavel, I have records of you, but I think there's a nice man misfiled somewhere - if you know where you're misfiled please wave your tripod head out of the folder in my file drawer).

Plus interest in an email this morning. Mr. Evans - your book mails out today, although I'm 0-for-2 lately mailing to PA. Your post offices are capable of repeatedly destroying my mailers.

The 8x10 workshop is too much fun not to do, especially in peak black fly season.

I hope to join a workshop later this year. The first one was one of the best photographic learning experiences I've had.

Thanks, Moose! We loved having you.

Inquiries on the May 5-8 Tire Kicker are heating up as people unbury themselves from our harsh winter. Spaces go to those who send deposits - $50 in a check made out to me.

Remember, all you do for the Tire Kicker is show up - we hand you a complete 8x10 outfit for your use while you're here.

Here, we'll post an 8x10 from Mike's Farm, a favorite workshop location. 8x10 Tri-X, Azo grade 3:
