View Full Version : Macro a la Guido Mocafico
We might know the Guido Mocafico series of watches (example here (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Oy7bvXz21lk/SxC_ZvNODEI/AAAAAAAAAzA/qWtsa24jums/s1600/mo5.jpg)), shot on 8x10, as he always does.
I was wondering what kind of lens+length bellows you might need...
I have a 8x10 camera with pretty long bellows and i crecently bought for 30$ a Tominon 105mm lens in copal0 that can give me a full imag circle when i shoot the subject at about 10cm form the lens... but is very hard to keep the focus because the focus field is really really thin!
I know about Macro lens but they are pretty expensive... what about the g-claron series? are good only for 1:1?

You could put in a lens insert to make your apeture smaller. I suppose you'd need to enlist the services of a machine shop, but it should be relatively cheap.

Brian, at high magnifications -- 1:1 actually qualifies -- stopping down will reduce DoF, not increase it. This happens when the Airy disk due to diffraction is roughly the size of the CoC used in calculating DoF. Equivalently, when the diffraction limited resolution (roughly 1600/(effective f/ number)) is roughly 1/CoC.
Tenser, buy a copy of Lester Lefkowitz' book The Manual of Closeup Photography.
I don't know how you're focusing. If you're focusing by moving the front standard, don't. Setting extension to get the magnification desired -- for a watch movement on 8x10 you'll need considerably more than 1:1 -- and then moving the camera/lens assembly (or the subject) to focus works much better.

You totally lost me...
But, Wow ! that example is so contrasty it looks more like an illustration than photo.
