Seems the older I get the smaller my Sony Trinitron monitor looks, and I am squinting all the time. I plan on moseying down to my local BB to get a larger lcd, but would like some idea of what to look for before buying. I realize these are not really pro monitors, but cost is an issue so...
A year or so ago I got a Gateway lcd but could not not calibrate it well. Images always look too dark and don't want to make the same mistake again.

Cheers

You can buy inexpensive IPS monitors. I have a Dell 2209WA, which is an e-IPS 22" panel for about $225. It calibrates and profiles fine with my Spyder 3. You really want an IPS versus a TN panel. The problem with TN panels is that the images characteristics will change with small movements of your head.

If by BB you mean Best Buy, I would hesitate. They sell low-end monitors. It may be better to wait until you can get something at least usable.

Acreage is king.

Get as large as you can afford.

I see what you mean, but $225 for a 23" Dell vs close to $1000 (or more) for most higher end monitors, geez.
Did see a used Apple cinema display locally but it was $500
My 50" 720p gaming plasma tv only cost $650 new lol.

I discussed BB or Best Buy, not Dell. A Dell will be worth the money, unless it's the same thing you get from Best Buy.

Get something that doesn't appear to change color/shade too much as you look at it from different heights and angles. The cheapest ones are very fussy in this regard. You don't have to spend too much though.
