Thanks jb7, I shot this with my Kodak Master and 14 inch Ektar 6.3 at f6.3. I have struggled for a long time with portraits but I feel like I'm getting closer to the look I want. It seems the main thing with portraits is gaining the trust of your subjects and then putting them in a situation where they feel at ease. Took this last weekend, an environmental portrait of my father and mother in-law at their rural home near Prescott Valley Arizona. My father in-law is a ferrier (blacksmith who shoe's horses), with his wife Brenda who is currently being treated for cancer. The photo is a labor of love for my wife's parents who I am very fond of.

you didn't mention any special lighting, was there any or was it advantageous room light (ie sky light above?)

Thanks Frank, three windows to the left, I kept the shutters on the far two half closed and opened all the way on the closest window spilling light onto the subjects. White ceilings and opposite walls helped a little.

Ari,
looks like you nailed it. nice, soft lighting, a little dark, kind of moody and romantic. interesting with the doorway as a background; would be interesting with other backgrounds, too. great model, very natural, very beautiful. She seems at ease. I like the direct look into the camera--you should encourage her to do a lot of sitting for you!

My local history group has received a grant to document the development of my area and the history of some of the older families who first settled here. As part of this they have invited the local camera club to take a range of portraits of some of the older families to accompany the publications and to put together an exhibition to go with the launch of the book.

I thought it might be fun to use the 8x10 rather than all of the digitals that were being used. All of the models/victims were well over 80 and I hope I look as healthy as some of them when I reach that age.

I will post more as I process them. both of these taken of Efke25 using the 8x10 and 14.5 inch verito at about f6.3-8.

I'm a lot bummed that my B&J Ajax Portrait Petzval doesn't even remotely cover 8x10. Now I need to figure out if I want to keep it for 5x7 (it was a sizable investment, but I don't see a lot of 5x7 in my immediate future), or sell it in favor of a Petzval to cover 8x10...

Very, very nice portrait. Something very edgy and moving about it when first seeing it. You have to know, must know what they're thinking. The lighting compliments (doesn't create) the emotion. It's something about the way they're holding each other, the very subtle gesture, one hand on the other and the expressions on their faces. This more like what you'd expect from a Leica photographer.

Do tell. I am prepared to take notes.

:)

well - it IS so simple I can't believe I am asked to explain...

But here it goes:

Use a Lf camera - I mainly use from 13x18 and larger, as the final result is done as a contact print - but smaller formats can be used.

Just put a piece of recin coated paper in the cassette in stead of a "real" film.
I mesure the light as about 8-12 iso.

(IF you're using a multigrade kind of paper, you can place a filter 0 behind (or on the front) of the lens, and thereby get more gray tones in the "negative". (later in the darkroom, you can always raise the contrast using a higher contrasted filter)

Take a picture - go to the darkroom and develop the paper as a normal paper.

when dry, make a contact print on a new piece of paper - this time I always use a high quality fiber based paper (or liquid emulsion).
Tone the final print if you feel like it.

that's it.

(I have only used one flash (open flash) on this one)

have fun!

Jay DeFehr
14-Jul-2010, 19:50
Thank you!

I thought there might be more to it, since your results look so good, but I suppose the combination of a SF lens and the high contrast of the paper, flash exposure, beautiful subject, image tone, etc., etc.....It's just a simple technique well executed. Thanks for sharing!

gandolfi,

Wonderful image. I was wondering how you got such a "clean" image, but seeing as you used RC paper as the neg, I can understand that. I used to shoot single weight paper negs and loved the texture of the actual paper coming thru on the final print.

I love seeing your images as they always keep me on edge as to what you are doing...Not pushing the envelope, but more like re-opening it.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Ted

Hi Kerik

I read your blog, don't you love when doctors always say, it's a simple procedure, in my books any operation of 1 hour is not simple, hey remember things could be worst, remember your alive that's the main thing, and the best part of being alive, you get to shoot more photo's.

First pull with heavily expired 809... My mother, Zen priest and professor of rhetoric and composition.

The second image is a scan of the negative sheet... Though I washed it, obviously I didn't wash it enough... Even the faintest bit of developer on the negative's trace image is enough to leave a white streak once it's inverted.

But it's interesting to note that the "negative" has much more shadow detail and possibly more highlight detail than the color positive. If I can figure out how to wash it properly, it will be a coup.

Self portraits with my wife working the speed graphic that I setup on a tripod guessing composition and prefocusing. 4x5 TMY2, Xtol 1+2, 203mm Optar f7.5 at about f8.5. Negatives scanned on v700.

Fabulous bokeh leaves background, overcast day. Trees are about 4-6' behind me. Had to crop one of the photos as she didn't put the darkslide back in before trying to remove/flip the film holder for the second shot :-) Didn't lose but half an inch of the photo much to my surprise. First time using this lens and I am very pleased.

5x7 portraits. HP5 d76 for the close up, I think the second one is diafine, both taco style, 2 negs in a 4 reel stainless tank. Schneider Kreuznach Symmar 180 f5.6

I'm escaping apug.org because of the no talking about scanning thing. Really impressed with the work I see here, really nice.

Just getting used to doing portraits with the 5x7. Have shot nothing but full frame digital for 5 or so years, just getting back to film. Really enjoy the challenge and differences with shooting film portraits, particularly LF.

Anyhoo...my latest two. The close up was an experiment. I'm not going to show it to the subject (my roomate) but I think it's interesting, anyway.

Hi,

this is my niece Katka, taken last week. The negative development become disaster, when one of the four negs went out of the rails in Jobo drum and started to cut the others with its edges every turn. When I took it out, more than four big grooves appeared on neg, luckily on the lower third of the picture so I made a crop and this is the final image. Absolutely not! There's nothing wrong with this image.

Frank's point is that we have entirely too many self-righteous hypocrites in the US, and some of those people would take great pleasure in reading something perverse into the image, mainly in the form of assumptions about what YOU might have done with your niece after the exposure was completed.

You are not alone in the US Louie.

Just about every major private, all boys school that was formerly run by the church, (in this city) has been hit with some massive sex scandal involving male staff and young boys, over the last few years.

But they would want to see Jiri's picture burned! :(

I don't think there are many photographers who see your photos as any other than a fine image of a loved child. But in the USA, if not other parts of the world, fundamentalist religious leaders and soulless Nanny State bureaucrats have helped make much of the public suspicious of any nudity, especially of child. Not that abuse doesn't exist, but intelligent common sense judgement seems even rarer.

David Aimone
25-Jul-2010, 12:30
As an image itself, it is fine, and beautiful. Beyond that, puritan and fundamentalist minds can read anything into it they want. It's a shame that we often assume the worst these days...

Just don't post any photos of sheep... (just joking)

As an image itself, it is fine, and beautiful. Beyond that, puritan and fundamentalist minds can read anything into it they want. It's a shame that we often assume the worst these days...

Just don't post any photos of sheep... (just joking)

Guys

We might be photographers, but at the end of the day, we must protect the children, it is because of the few bad eggs we end up with a bad reputation, because of the 000000000.1% that are not honest decent photographers.

Agreed. It's just a shame those bad eggs have to ruin it for others. That's the reality, I guess.

Yes, and a little early & too far south... Burningman is the week ending Labor Day, at the Black Rock Desert. This year the man burns on Sept 4th (my birthday), but without me.
I'm a 10 year burner, missing out this year due to funding issues.
I've shot a lot there, but all 35mm & 120.
A wild & crazy time, with lots of characters, John & Jim would fit right in.....

The mood of this picture reminds me of another portrait of wavy-haired beauty taken with a 14" Pinkham-Smith lens in Abel's book. Soft, subtle and dreamy. What a classic!

Daniel,

The book is "Professional Portrait Lightings" by Charles Abel, published in 1947 by Greenberg. Hard cover with 272 pages of portraits of many photographers with studio cameras and various portrait lenses. Many detailed notes and drawings of lightings. The picture I mentioned is in page 188.

Did you use your Pinkham lens for this one?

Hugo
