6x9 and 4x5 back removal on Horseman 970

Hi , I have just bought a 970 and find that removing the 6x9 back or the 4x5 back is a scary procedure -- the sprung levers which hold the backs to the body have lots of tension . Is there a knack or something I am missing ? I find it almost impossible to avoid the levers "snapping" back onto the bothy w ith a thwack ..
