Obviously one can produce paper prints directly from negative film.

With positive film, is the only way to a paper print a digital scan, followed by a print; or are there other (better?) techniques?

Welcome to the forum, have a search for Ilfochrome and Cibachrome, two names for the same process that allows direct printing from transparencies.

In addition to Ilfochrome/Cibachrome prints, one can have a color film negative made from the slide which is then printed. This is what most pro-labs offer when asked for optical prints from transparencies.

There are still a few labs that offer Ilfo/Ciba- chromes. These prints are spectacular.
