Sotheby's is a great place to see photography. the crowds are much smaller than at the museums, the previews are free and i just walk to it since i live across the street.

The auction broke a record for the highest price paid for a Ansel Adams picture -

It's nice to see St. Ansel's prices back up. Even for those who don't like his images, he's still the greatest printer I've ever experenced.

Those big prices were for the really big Ansel murals. Not sure how often those come up for sale.

On the other hand I haven't seen so many William Wegman prints in one place in a long time. Ditto for Lucas Samaras. That big Polaroid must have been fun...

It's nice to see St. Ansel's prices back up. Even for those who don't like his images, he's still the greatest printer I've ever experenced.

Ansel was, without doubt, one of the great gelatin silver printers. Although the noted print was 40"x50", size may not have been a major force behind the price. A gelatin silver image of that size, or any size, has an unmatched quality, something that discriminating viewers and collectors can appreciate.

Fifteen years ago, I predicted that gelatin silver prints would become very valuable; this is just the beginning.
