Santa Monica area suggestion?

I find myself in Santa Monica CA for one night and I have my 4x5 stuff with me. I'd like to get out tomorrow morning before sunrise. Any suggestions on a location within 30 minutes or so of here?

I'd go to the pier, but pretty much any street should have something "LA like."

If it were me and I had no idea of what to do ..esp with large format
I'd just drive or walk through the residential areas during the daylight and take photos of homes/architecture/hardscapes

venice, santa monica/canyon, palisades, malibu

at night i'd probably walk the beach and businesses/promenade

you can keep busy for one day within the city no problems
