Crane/Young Soft Focus Lens & Pictorialism workshop

Met some very friendly and skilled photographers from around the world.
Tillman and Russ were both generous and highly knowledgeable instructors. (Russ is author of the doctoral thesis that is often referred to for soft focus lens details)

We all got to use each others equipment (mostly Russ's and Tillmans). I got to use about six very valuable soft focus lenses over three days of shooting in a variety of situations. It could take years and many many thousands of dollars to get some of this sort of experience any other way.

Russ Young is the bearded professor looking guy with his gear in the first photo. Tillman Crane is the closest person in the 2nd photo (with the buzz cut)

I'll have to look at my notes for the full list and specific lens variations. I liked them all really. I used a big sigmar, P&S semiachromat s1#3, kodak 305 portrait, 14" veritar, pentax 120mm soft focus, a monster eidoscope, and one or two others. I haven't picked one as a favorite. I have to further consider what I want to shoot with soft focus before deciding which to covet.

We shot in nearby woods/gardens on two afternoons, and killed a day at the Olson house (of Andrew Wyeth fame) with it's old interior and two models Tillman arranged.

Young/Crane and some of the participants are accomplished alternative process practitioners. I was able to make a pretty nice cyanotype while relaxing on the porch.
