It appears that I have accidentally deleted it. I am waiting to see if there is some way to restore it.

Great first picture to start the month...

Ken, Ken, Ken...

Never mind, it could happen to a Bishop-

There were so many good pictures on that thread, fabulous portraits-
The early ones from the Wetplate day, the big colour ones,
and that fantastic one with the cherry blossom-

Frank remarked that the standard was improving, and I'd have to agree-

Anyway, hopefully everyone will post again-

This was the previous first post in the May thread, although this is the other Colour neg I shot-
Genevieve seems to be finding her deletion funny in this one...

And a bonus picture- the only B+W neg I shot-
technically the best of the three, less movement in her face-

Sorry again.

Please re-post your images. There were many lovely portraits here.

no worries Ken, it's all good.

Or whatever the spiderman line is.....

Okay, a repost from wetplate day. Both whole plate, but different cameras and different lenses. First one was on the korona 11X14 with a Swift and sons rapid and the second on the century 10A with a dallmeyer 4B

Thank you all for your praise of my plate. Occasionally (and I do mean occasionally) my Daguerreotype process comes together, and produces results which make all the failures worthwhile, but this is no different from any other process. A patient four-year old in a new pink dress also helps.

Nice, Ken. Gotta love that 300 A, am I right?

You're right indeed - It's one of the future classics that somehow didn't get onto Kerry's list of Future Classics (http://www.thalmann.com/largeformat/future.htm). I'm always grateful to the late Ted Harris for alerting me to it.

I'm having George Brown (http://shop.ebay.com/apogeebee/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=100&_sop=1&_rdc=1) mount mine on a Sinar DB lens board, so that I can use it more comfortably. I rank Sinar DB Lens Boards up there with 2-Bath Pyrocat and Infra Red Viewing Devices. Once you use them, you don't want to go back. (You need a Sinar Shutter too)

I really don't know why people consider the Fujinon A line, as process lenses. True, they are f/9 like many Dialyte process lenses, but they have 6 elements, not just 4.

If you look at the cross-section on this brochure (http://www.thalmann.com/largeformat/as-sfs.htm) (again, courtesy of Kerry Thalmann), they more closely resemble Plasmat types. Perhaps they are simply f/9 Plasmats, (and thus small and light).

Ben Syverson
15-May-2010, 15:38
Ken, your site helped push me toward the A, so thank you! I suspect that you're right about them being essentially tiny Plasmats, not Dialyts... I'm sure they work work fine for process, but they were marketed as general purpose lenses, right? I would love to find a 360A someday.

To tie this in to the thread, I'll post an image with the 300A. If you click through and look at the 28MP "Original" size on flickr (you have to be logged in), you can see that there was a clear blue sky that day, the leaves are coming in on the trees outside, and there's a bowl on the windowsill of my studio. All reflected in Nick's eye! Sharp lens.

Although the 360A is 20% longer than a 300A, the asking price is more.

Speaking of helpful advice, it was Igor of Igor's Camera Exchange (http://www.igorcamera.com/) who recommended the Sinar Shutter to me.

By getting one, I was able to get a 360mm APO Nikkor. The shutter and lens together, still cost less than a 360 Fujinon A - if one were available. (In fact, my camera, sinar shutter, and that Nikor lens, are still probably cheaper than a 360A). The Nikkor probably has less coverage than the Fujinon and plasmats, but it offers plenty for 5x7 and 4x5.

Ben Syverson
15-May-2010, 19:30
Yeah, I would need to find a might good deal on that 360A to even think about it! And 360 vs 300 might not be enough of a difference.

I suppose it's more likely that I'll cave in on a 450C :)

I´m just glad that this portrait got posted again. I´ll repeat myself. This is the best portrait I´ve seen in years. Its a story all to itself. Apart from being astoundingly beautiful, it feeds the mind. I can´t help wondering what has happened to this pretty girl? What is she thinking? Who is she thinking of? Has she lost someone dear? I can keep going on like that for ages. That´s what elevates it to brilliant, not just bl@@dy good!

Gonzo
25-May-2010, 13:39
@RmFrase: I would say a splendid start in Largeformat portaits!
@RPippin: Can we consider a Bronica SQa to be a LF cam? I always considered 6x6 to be medium format. I like the first one, in the second one the model is a bit too soft for my liking.

Here's my very first LF portrait. I think I've placed my DOF too high by just an inch or so. I was definitely playing with the maximum movements for my lense, since the upper part of the negative showed some vignetting...

Technical specs: Burke&James, HP5+ 4x5, 210mm at about f8

RPippin
25-May-2010, 13:55
Thanks for the comment, Gonzo. I suppose 21/4 X 21/4 should be medium format, but I like the shots so much I thought I'd try and get away with it this one time. I'll behave in the future and only send shots from large format. Your right, they are a bit soft, but I've learned that shooting portraits of the opposite sex better be a bit soft. I like your shot and I would not be concerned with DOF, but how you feel. Portraits have an emotional component to them that can best be served, at times, with a little creative focus.

I hesitate to post this, as it's an 8x10 negative scanned as a print and inverted; not the best workflow! I'm actually surprised it works as well as it does. I'm looking forward to printing this one. Details:

Subject: My darling Juliet among the sage and stones on the banks of the Snake River.

Camera: Deardorff V8
Lens: 14-1/2" Wollensak Verito, f16 (I know, odd choice)
Film: TMY
Developer: Duet (2-bath version of Hypercat)
Dilution: 1:10 A, 1% TSP B
Time: 2:00 A, 1:00 B

Nice portrait, Jay. Juliet has a strong profile. The lens accentuates creamy skin tones but personally I don't care for the general lack of sharpness; it almost looks like a focusing error.

Thanks for the compliments, Armin and Mike. Juliet is a lot of fun to photograph.

Mike,

I've never used this lens at such a small aperture, and so I'm reserving judgment until I can actually print this negative. A reflective scan of an 8x10 negative on a flatbed scanner is not a fair trial. At this point, I share your reservations, but I'm keeping an open mind.

Well, here is a lens test that I really botched. Underexposed by about two stops, and the holder is leaky!

I was testing out the 159mm f/12.5 Wollesak WA on 8x10, and despite how wide it is (22mm equivalent), I think it could be useful for environmental portraits.

The subject is my friend and fellow photographer Justin Lundquist (http://justinlundquist.com/)

I like that rendering, especially the flare. Together the slight underexposure and flare are very effective.

well two days to go till june....lets keep Ken Lee away from the delete button in june....Ken, you listening? LOL.

forum member Harold Levie was on the right coast this weekend and dropped by. it was a fun visit. he brought his son Edward as well. you can guess who is who.

we shot some 5x7 collodion images. i used a 450mm Plasticca on ed and a 15 inch cooke f4.5 on Harold. (i forgot about shooting on aluminum and focused on the wrong eye....if i could only figure out how to flip it in PS....anyone?)

both were shot wide open.

159 is about 27mm equivalent. perfect for enviromental portraits at a distance, not so much close up.

Thanks, Ron -- I think it's definitely worth exploring this lens more. Next time I won't botch the exposure so I won't be forced into such a high contrast rendition!

Yeah, definitely not a close-up lens! Ha

I calculate equivalence based on the long dimension, not the diagonal (since what l'm most interested in is horizontal FOV, not diagonal FOV), so 159/250 * 36 = 22.8. So I guess it's really closer to 23mm, at least in my world

Nice one Jim.
I like the angle, camera position and framing in Jan a touch better, but Dewey has a face that begs for a really tight frame that shows the "don't screw with me" fire in his eyes! :) :)

I have not had time to make a new frame in ages.

jim kitchen
2-Jun-2010, 22:38
Dear Allen,

Merci... :)

Jan has the softer touch compared to Dewey, and as Dewey's better half, she has her own rules, about clarity and tidiness. I captured this image while it was hailing, snowing and raining simultaneously, and where my boots were stuck in one inch of deep soft slippery mud. I was continuously exposed to the weather, while Jan was protected under the porch roof, and Jan decided to ask me whether the weather conditions would hurt my camera, while I tried to capture her image. I could only smile and say no as the hail and snow bounded over her protective roof top, pounding directly into my face, quickly dropping and collecting at my feet.

Jan had different ideas about her image and immediately removed the traditionally placed radio, the makeshift nylon bridles, and one of the plastic milk containers. She quickly grabbed them and tossed them into the bridle, and saddle storage area behind her. Jan happens to be more cognizant of any extraneous materials compared to Dewey, and since Dewey was still pissed at the stallion when I captured his image, he could care less about these items, even after he barked his orders at me while I set the camera...

As a side note, Dewey tends to look that intense every day, especially after shoeing five or six stallions in a row, and I know I will able to capture a tighter image that demonstrates his natural intensity later.

That said, you must try to make time, too...

Dear Don,

Thank you for your kind words... :)

I am beginning to enjoy this new experience regarding outdoor portraits, but only when the subject doesn't blink, open their mouth to say a few words and, or shuffle their figure from left to right, just as I happen to trigger the shutter.
